We finally have gotten colder weather and snow in the Northeast! If you live in NYC and are looking for somewhere relatively close by to ski for Presidents’ Day weekend- check out Vermont! There are a ton of different ski resorts and mountains ranging from roughly a 3.5 to 6.5 hour drive from Manhattan. We have compiled a list of some great ski areas that definitely worth checking out this winter season. Whether you are a Glenwood resident looking to escape the city for a ski day trip or a weekend of fun, keep reading to find out where we suggest you go!

Stratton

Stratton is a little over 4 hours from NYC making it one of the closer Vermont mountain towns to ski! Stratton not only has great skiing, but has a bustling town! With great restaurants, shops, ice skating, and much more you will find a ton to do even if you are not an avid skier! There is even the Stratton Fitness center with an indoor pool, tennis, and cycling classes! Stowe

Named one of the “Top 10 Ski Towns in America” by Forbes, Stowe is somewhere that anyone who loves a quaint town will enjoy! Yes- it has great skiing, but it also has a great town filled with 50 boutiques and many spots to dine! If you want to shop, snow bike, dog sled, snow mobile, sled ride, winter zip line, or spa you are in for a treat! Stowe really is the winter ski town that has it all! For Glenwood residents, it is a 6.5 hr drive from NYC-but it is also filled with so many events and activities, which would make for a great long weekend getaway!

Sugarbush

Sugarbush is composed of two mountains-Lincoln Peak and Mt. Ellen- with over 100 different ski trails for all levels of skiers. Sugarbush is said to have a bit of that “western” ski town feel too. This is a great family spot! If you wake up early enough you can even ride one of the Snowcats that grooms the mountains during sunrise. If you are interested click here to find out more information on the ski and lodging options. There is one Relais & Chateaux hotel nearby called The Pitcher Inn that is fantastic. Each room is themed slightly differently with an authentic cabin feel, and if you are a fan of farm to table dining- this is the place for you!  The drive to Sugarbush for Glenwood residents is roughly 5.5 hrs from NYC.

If you are a tennis fan, the US Open is one of the exciting events happening August 28th through September 10th! Some Tips For Attending The Tournament

This year is the 143rd  US Open tournament with men and women’s singles defending champions Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek! If you have never attended the US Open before, you are in for a treat! The stadium is filled with tents for food, drinks, and tennis paraphernalia! If you want to spend some time shopping and looking around make sure to enter the stadium early! Also, a great tip is to wear sneakers–there is a ton of walking with big crowds, so be ready!  Even if you dress up for the occasion, you will be happy you wore sneakers! Both the day and night matches are a perfect and exciting way to end the summer!

How to get there? Train or taxi are both easy options. The stadium is located at 124 Roosevelt Ave in Flushing, NY. If you are looking to hop on a train from Manhattan the quickest is to take the line 7 subway which has a stop at Mets-Willets Point. The stadium is only a 10 minute walk away!

Mother’s Day is just around the corner!  Whether you are celebrating with your mother in person or via zoom, you can find special ways to make her feel extra appreciated! Keep reading to see what we suggest.

If you are lucky enough to be with your mother during this period of social distancing and get to celebrate in person, these are some suggestions of special things you can do!

  • Make a coupon book of household chores to give your mom. During this period of social distancing the house is kind of always a mess. (At least mine is!) From using our kitchen table for all meals, zoom conferences, zoom school, arts and crafts, puzzles and games- our kitchen has a taken a serious beating! And, many times it is mom cleaning it up! Why not create a great coupon book of chores that she can pass off to you on certain days she doesn’t want to swiffer the kitchen floor or do the laundry.
  • Buy flowers! If you want to invest in flowers that will last an entire year- check out Venus et Fleur eternity roses! You can also order a beautiful bouquet from bouqs.com. During this social distancing period, cooking has definitely given many a creative outlet! Some of us are definitely not good cooks or very experienced cooks, but you can take these weeks at home to hone in on your culinary skills. While it is crucial right now to try to keep our bodies as healthy as possible, place an emphasis on using immune boosting ingredients! Keep reading to find out some suggested ingredients and meals!

 

 

Trying to go to the grocery store as infrequently as possible right now (I try to stretch out visits to every week and a half) means creating a meal prep in advance! Try to cook meals with differing flavor profiles, but that include similar ingredients! Glenwood buildings also have a Neighbor to Neighbor List. If you are a Glenwood resident looking to assist neighbors like elderly or immune compromised with trips to the grocery store please contact your doorman to be added to your buildings list.

Some foods that boost your immune system are:

Citrus fruits -vitamin C!

Broccoli -vitamin A, C, E!

Garlic – antioxidant!

Ginger- has been used as a homeopathic remedy to help aid flu recovery for years!

Spinach – vitamin A, K C, folate, magnesium, iron, B12! 

Green tea -antioxidants! 

Mushrooms- vitamin B!

Açaí- high antioxidants!

Yogurt- probiotic and vitamin D!

Sweet Potatoes- vitamin B, C and calcium!

Red Peppers- high in vitamin C!

Onions- vitamin C, B, potassium, and antioxidants!

 

Keeping the above list in mind, we have mapped out some meal options to consider! This was my meal plan this past weekend.

Friday

Breakfast:

Açaí bowl

  •  The base is made in a blender with frozen açaí berries, almond butter, almond milk or coconut water, spinach, and frozen bananas. It is okay if you don’t have frozen fruit on hand- but using frozen fruit makes the consistency thicker. Once blended, pour into a bowl and top with whatever ingredients speak to you! I like to add granola, a dollop of almond butter, chia seeds, orange slices, and strawberry slices.

Lunch:

Immune Boosting Brown Rice Bowl

  • If you don’t want to have carbs- you can substitute the brown rice for cauliflower rice! (or skip the rice all together) It is all about the immune boosting ingredients you add into your bowl, I went with mushrooms, onions and garlic
  • In a pot cook your choice of rice.
  • In a frying pan, sprinkle a little olive oil and 2 chopped garlic cloves. A minute later, add in sweet onions. When the onions begin to turn golden, add in your mushrooms! Sprinkle with a pinch of salt and pepper and sauté until your mushrooms are soft.
  • Combine your rice and sauté pan into a bowl and enjoy!

Dinner: 

Immune Boosting Stir Fry and Tofu/Chicken/Beef

  • In a frying pan, add olive oil, salt and pepper, spinach, garlic, red peppers, mushrooms, onion, broccoli, zucchini and carrots. Drizzle in soy sauce and a drop of sesame seed oil.
  • In a second pan cook your tofu, chicken, or beef
  • You are left with a tasty, immune boosting dinner that you are sure to love!

Saturday

Breakfast:

Yogurt With Honey And Green Tea

  • This is a simple breakfast that includes a probiotic and antioxidants! Plus, LOCAL honey helps with allergies.

 

Lunch:

Egg Omelet

  • I use egg whites and add spinach, mushrooms, goat cheese, onions and add Sriracha. This meal is a great way to get in a ton of immune boosting vitamins!

 

Dinner:

Lemon Chicken

  • For dinner, try to cook a lemon chicken! If you don’t want to roast an entire chicken, you can marinate your chicken breast in a container with lemon juice and slices, olive oil, garlic, a pinch of salt and pepper. Once the chicken is ready, I like to slice up some orange or grapefruit slices to put on my plate! It’s a great citrus dish high in vitamin C!

Sunday

Breakfast:

A Berry Veggie Smoothie!

  • If you don’t like the “green smoothie” taste, there is a way to mask the flavor of veggies you want to incorporate into your smoothie! Choose your base, I prefer unsweetened almond milk. Then, I add in a handful of frozen strawberries and a cup of frozen bananas. I put a spoonful of almond butter and a squirt of honey. I also add a handful of spinach (you really don’t taste it!)

 

Lunch:

Avocado Toast

  • I find that bread is hard to come across in the super markets, so I haven’t been picky with my bread choice as long as its not white bread! On my toast I add half an avocado, squeeze lemon, add a dash of salt and pepper and chop up red peppers to put on my toast! I also add a fried egg on top with red crushed pepper flakes. This lunch is healthy, immune boosting and filling!

Dinner:

Spaghetti Squash

  • On Sundays for dinner, I like something Italian! So, I tried to satisfy this craving with a roasted spaghetti squash topped with tomato sauce and chopped garlic! (Not socializing means loading up on the garlic is okay!) You may actually feel like you are eating pasta-it is that good!
  • If you haven’t had spaghetti squash before, it is incredibly simple to make! Cut the spaghetti squash length wise and scoop out the seeds. Lightly drizzle the inside of the squash with olive oil and a small pinch of salt and pepper. Place the two halves faced down on a baking pan. Cook the squash for 30-40 minutes (depending on your oven) at 400F.

While practicing social distancing at home, baking has become one of my family’s favorite activities. Not only does it take up a lot of time, get the entire family doing something together, and taste delicious- but homemade treats are extremely comforting and we could all use a little of that right now! Over the past few months, I have tried to place an emphasis on using healthy ingredients to bake with, and it turns out that our cookies, brownies, muffins and banana bread still taste just as delicious-maybe even better! Keep reading to find out some of my suggestions.

 

Healthy Baking Substitutes In The Kitchen:

For All Purpose Flour

  • Almond Flour
  • Oat Flour
  • Coconut Flour
  • Chickpea Flour

 

For Butter

  • Olive Oil
  • Coconut Oil
  • Almond Butter
  • Ghee
  • Mashed Bananas (great for baking!)

 

For Sugar

  • Coconut sugar
  • Maple Syrup
  • Agave Nectar

 

For Pam Spray

  • Olive Oil Spray
  • Coconut Oil Spray

 

 

Healthy, Delicious Recipes!

Rolled oat cookies ready to go into the oven!

 

Chocolate Chip Banana Cookies!

These cookies are so easy to make! And, you only need 3 ingredients!

Ingredients:

  • 5 cups of oatmeal
  • 2 bananas
  • 1/3 cup of chocolate chips

Instructions:

  1. Mash the bananas, add in the oats – mix until smooth
  2. Add in as many chocolate chips as you desire
  3. Pop them on a sprayed baking sheet in the oven at 350 for 15ish minutes (some ovens cook faster than others)

 

Chickpea Blondies

Ingredients:

  • 1 can of Chickpeas
  • 1/3 cup of Maple syrup
  • ½ cup of Peanut butter (or your butter of choice alternative)
  • ¼ tsp Baking soda
  • ¼ tsp Baking powder
  • ½ tsp vanilla
  • ½ tsp salt
  • Chocolate chips

 

Instructions:

  1. Combine all ingredients into a bowl except the chocolate chips
  2. Whisk together until smooth
  3. Add a handful of chocolate chips
  4. Pop into a baking tin and bake at 350 degrees for 20ish minutes, check with a toothpick around 15 minutes as every oven bakes differently!

Banana Oat Muffin

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1 heaping cup of mashed bananas
  • 1 ¼ cups almond flour
  • ½ cup of coconut sugar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp vanilla
  • ¾ cup of almond milk
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • Almond butter and cinnamon as frosting

 

Instructions:

  1. In a bowl combine all the dry ingredients, mix together
  2. Add in the wet ingredients, whisk until smooth consistency
  3. Spray muffin tin with olive oil spray and pop in the oven at 400 for 20 minutes
  4. Let the muffins sit for 10 minutes then coat the top with almond butter and a dash of cinnamon!

While we have entered yet another month of social distancing, you may be wondering what are the new best shows, books, or things to do at home to keep us entertained through the next few weeks. Whether your escape from slight cabin fever is cooking, reading, or a great movie, we have some suggestions for you! Keep reading to find out more.

Movement

Movement will definitely help release excess up energy you have while you haven’t been able to go to your favorite spinning or Barry’s boot camp class! A great idea that many can do is go for a long walk. If you have an iPhone, the health app will track your steps. Try to aim for 10,000 steps a day. You can go for a morning walk and an afternoon walk, which can add structure  and routine to your day. If you need some adult time from your kids at home, this is a great way to get out of the house for an hour.

 

There are many free exercise classes available online to choose from, but I have been gravitating towards the Peloton app’s yoga and meditating classes. Again, looking for any sort of routine right now, I usually will do a 20 minute mat workout, followed by light stretching and a 10 meditation either on the Peloton app or the Calm app.

Cooking

A great dinner option to use immune boosting ingredients (and really any veggies left over in your fridge) is curry!  I have made curry a few ways now and this one is my favorite recipe from a Vegan-ish food instagram account I follow called VeganishVal. But remember, you can throw in or substitute any veggies or protein options you have at home!

 

Ingredients -(feeds 3)

  1. purple onions
  2. red bell peppers
  3. zucchini
  4. coconut oil
  5. firm tofu (or chicken)
  6. coconut milk
  7. 2 tsp curry powder
  8. 1 tsp turmeric
  9. 1 tsp ginger powder
  10. dash of cinnamon
  11. 1 tsp garlic powder
  12. 1 tsp chili powder
  13. pink salt
  14. pepper
  15. 1/2 lime
  16. rice of choice
  17. spinach

 

 

Directions:

  • sauté purple onions, red bell peppers, and zucchini in a pan lined with coconut oil
  • grill tofu in a touch of sesame oil on another pan
  • cook rice
  • once veggies are soft, add in 1/2 cup of coconut milk
  • 2 tsp curry powder, 1 tsp tumeric, 1 tsp ginger powder, dash of cinnamon, 1 tsp garlic powder, 1 tsp chili powder, pinch of salt and pepper, 1/2 lime juice
  • cover and cook veggies for 5-7 min and then add another 1/2 cup of coconut milk
  • add 2 handfuls of spinach, cover and cook for 5 more min
  • add the tofu
  • pour over rice

While we are spending all of our times social distancing at home, it is important to come up with fun ways to pass the time. If you have a favorite game from childhood, it’s time to teach your kids! Looking for some suggestions? Check out our recommendations below.

Monopoly Deal

If you grew up playing Monopoly with your family- you likely either have a love or hate relationship with the game. If you are looking for an abbreviated version of the game, you are in luck! There is a 20 minute card version that we highly recommend! My family has played it every night for the passed 2 weeks after dinner for hours. It can be played 2-6 people and doesn’t get boring!

 

Codenames

If you are into spy type games- this one’s for you! This game is best played with 4 or more people, which is great if you are staying at home with your entire family. The premise is that there are two teams, each with a spymaster who will provide you with clues to guess specific key words. When you guess a keyword, you reveal the identity of a spy on the opposing team!  This game is fun for the entire family or if you are at home with your college aged kids!

TikTok

TikTok has become a huge hit during this stay at home period. It is an social media app that you can download on your phone to create short dances to songs. Many songs have specific dances that you can learn by watching others preform them. Practice with your whole family and post your version of the dance! Many TikTok videos feature entire families who are quarantined together from parents to grandparents! This is a fun way to spend time and burn off some of that cabin fever!

Clue

An oldie but a goodie! Clue-a murder mystery whodunnit board game- never disappoints! Plus, there is a movie you can watch after or before you play to add to the experience!

Canasta

If you like to play the card game gin rummy- you would like the card game Canasta! You will have to look up the rules online, but essentially it is a parter game (4 people need to play) that expands Gin Rummy with more complex rules. The full game takes about 90 minutes to complete- so a great way to pass time at home! It is a little complex, so this game is better for older kids to join in on.

Rummikub

This is a tile game that encompasses elements of rummy and mahjong. The point is to use all of your tiles before your opponents due!  They have online versions of this game so that you can play against others! Check the app store on your phone!

 

Bananagram

If you are a fan of scrabble- you will definitely enjoy Bananagram! You get letter tiles and try to use them to spell out words without any sort of game board! Simple and easy fun- it is a perfect game for kids or adults!

While we are practicing social distancing at home, you may find yourself experiencing cabin fever. If you have done an online exercise class or even just some push ups, planks and crunches,  you still may be feeling unsettled. It is just as important to exercising your mind during this time! Below are some of our suggestions on how to do just that.

 

Calm The Mind

Practicing any sort of meditation has been proven to significantly reduce anxiety and in turn allow you to be more at ease with the fact that you are spending an abundance of time socially isolated and in your apartment. If you are new to meditation there are some great apps that can help.

Calm

  • The Calm app that is available for download through the iTunes store or on their website calm.com can help with sleep, meditation. If you want to be led in a meditation session, there are multiple for you to choose from. If you are looking for breathing exercises, the app has many! If you want to view beautiful nature scenes, there are mountains, rivers, lakes, woods and more to explore. The app even has mindful stretching and gentle movements, which are perfect to practice in your apartment right now.

 

Headspace

  • The Headspace app is available for download through the iTunes store or on their website headspace.com. Headspace is a great way to practice mindfulness and meditation. There are different levels to choose from within the different types of categories such as insight meditation, calming meditation and compassionate meditation. You even have the option to choose if you would like your experience to be guided or unguided.

 

Some other great options to explore are:

  • Insight timer
  • Aura
  • The Breathing App (it is free!)

Yoga

If you would like to add some movement to your meditation, yoga is a great option.

  • Glo online yoga is a great place for all levels to start- there are numerous classes to choose from and a 15 day free trial period.
  • Gaia yoga online has a great variety of different classes for different needs whether you are looking for stress relief, flexibility or pain relief
  • You can also youtube free classes!

Activities

If meditating is just not for you, there are  some more active things you can do to relax your mind.

  • Studies have shown that coloring can actually reduce stress and anxiety, so adult coloring books are a great activity. If you don’t have a coloring book (borrow your child’s) or just pick up a pen and start doodling to some nice music.

 

  • Crossword puzzles are a nice way to pass time in a relaxing manor. There are tons of different ones online that are free! You can find a topic that interests you and occupy your mind for an hour with something that is not COVID-19 related. Boatloadpuzzles.com is a free option along with games.washingtonpost.com.

 

  • Sudoku is a great game that can be played solo too!
