New York City is filled to the brim with fantastic cultural events, and with the Chinese New Year approaching on Tuesday, February 5th, and there are plenty of activities taking place next to Glenwood buildings to check out. This year brings in The Year of the Pig, and no matter which Glenwood neighborhood you live in, there’ss something for you to engage in! We’ve broken up the events by neighborhood below!

If You Live on the Westside

If you live on the west side and would like to participate in Chinese New Year activities close to your apartment, check out the Upper West Side’s New York Historical Society. 

On Sunday, February 17th, they will be hosting a special “Little New Yorkers Celebrate Lunar New Year” event with fun activities, crafts, and snacks! The event goes from 1pm to 3:30 pm. The event is included with regular museum entrance.

 

 

 

For Residents of the Upper East Side

Upper East Siders in Glenwood’s The Brittany and Hampton Court can head to their local museum, the Asia Society, to take part in the event “Moon Over Manhattan! Celebrate Lunar New Year”. Saturday February 9th1 to 5pm at 725 Park Avenue. The event will feature a variety of fun events perfect for varying age levels, such as kung fu demonstrations, dances, musical performances, Chinese theater, mask making, puppet making, and many other fun crafty events. The entire event is from 1 pm to 5 pm, but feel free to stop by anytime between those hours to get in on the festivities. The event is priced at $5 for children, students, and seniors, $7 for adults who are members, and $12 for adults who are non-members.

For Our Neighbors Downtown

Glenwood residents living in Downtown Manhattan’s Barclay Tower will delight in celebrating Chinese New Year at Brookfield Place, with their event “Lunar New Year: Year of the Pig Celebration” on Saturday, February 9th.

Presented in partnership with the New York Chinese Cultural Center, this event will include traditional Chinese dance and music, martial arts, and a parade. It begins at 1:40pm and is free! It will start with a festive lion dance that begins at the World Trade Oculus and ends up in the Winter Garden! Click here to find out more details.

No Matter Which Neighborhood You Live In

The Chinese Lunar New Year Paradeis happening Sunday, February 17thfrom 11am to 3:30pm. This fun parade includes floats, dragons, performers and dancers! It is a great way to celebrate the Chinese New Year! It begins at 1pm, to check out its route click here! Since it attracts so many people, plan to arrive on the very early side to snag a good spot. While it’s technically open to people of any age group, it should be noted that due to the large crowds and noise levels, it might be best to leave the very young and very old at home for this one.

20th New Year Firecracker Ceremony is another great event to attend to celebrate the Chinese New Year! It takes place at Sara D. Roosevelt Park on February 5th11am to 3:30pm. Hundreds of firecrackers are set off to ward off evil from entering 2019! It’s definitely a fun event that should not be missed!
