In case you haven’t heard… the Open House New York Weekend is coming up! The weekend of October 15-16th marks one of the country’s largest architecture and design festivals, inviting New Yorkers and tourists alike to visit more than 275 historic and contemporary sites throughout the five boroughs since 2003. What makes this REALLY special is that these sites are usually off-limits to the public… kinda making this a once in a lifetime (or at least once a year) opportunity!

Along with venue visits, OHNY includes talks and tours from leading design professionals – giving some background on what makes these spots so unique. The lineup ranges from historic farm houses to jazz age theaters and the cutting age architectural design of today. The special event weekend includes many open access sites that are completely free to visit.

Some of the more popular spots require advance reservations, which can be made online and include a small $5 reservation fee. Some of these sites include the New York Photo Safari, Ridgewood Reservoir, and the Queens Botanical Garden. Go on and reserve your favorite before tickets sell out!

With so many beautiful and unique spots to choose from, there’s no way to see all of them in one weekend. But don’t worry – we’ve rounded up 5 favorite Open Access Sites (meaning no reservation/payment required). With our list of one event in each borough, you won’t miss out on a nearby site, so here’s some guidance of where to start your weekend!

Brooklyn: NY Sun Works’ Greenhouse Project at PS84

We love the idea of using NYC rooftops for something good, especially since there’s so many of them! The folks at the Greenhouse Project did just that – they made a rooftop greenhouse and use it to teach urban agriculture to students from K to 12th grade in NYC public schools. ‘Tis the season for beautiful foliage!

When: Saturday, October 15th from 10 am – 2 pm

Manhattan: Marjorie Eliot’s Parlor Jazz

How does a “living treasure” of a national landmark gone apartment building to hear jazz music sound? You can do just that in Marjorie Eliot’s Washington Heights apartment! Marjorie hosted audiences from all over the world here for over 20 years, and now you can get a front row seat for yourself. She honored the legacy of African American music, and bridging cultures and communities through her parlor jazz concerts. Two concerts will be happening over the weekend, first come, first served!

When: Sunday, October 16th at 3:30 pm

5 Upper West Side Boozy Brunch Spots https://www.glenwoodnyc.com/manhattan-living/5-upper-west-side-boozy-brunch-spots/ Fri, 22 Jul 2016 14:40:27 +0000 http://glenwoodstage.wpengine.com/?p=15873 Brunch is the most sought after meal of the day. But Boozy Brunches have become all the rage. Weekends are just not the same without going out on a sunday morning with friends to get a little buzz on while shoving your face with Nutella stuffed french toast. Here are 5 boozy brunch spots in the Upper West Side to start your day off right!

As any New Yorker will tell you, brunch is somewhat of a NYC institution. In fact, we don’t just use the word to describe a meal between breakfast and lunch, but rather as a verb: “Where are we brunching this weekend?” We, my friends, have you covered on that one! Below is a roundup of 5 boozy brunches for you to enjoy on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. Mimosa refill, anyone?

Calle Ocho

If you’re a fan of sangria (and food with a Latin vibe), this is your spot! While you pay per item for food, your brunch includes unlimited sangria during the course of your meal. And we’re not just talking the boring varieties of “red” vs. “white” sangria, oh, no. Calle Ocho has eight different sangria flavors, ranging from Havana Banana (think Coconut Rum, Crème de Banana, Coconut, Lychees) to the Spanish Harlem (a mix of Dark Rum, Cinnamon, Peach, Mandarins). Is it Sunday yet?

Arte Cafe

While the Arte Cafe doesn’t have an all inclusive deal, it does offer great deals on pitchers of your breakfast drink of choice: bellini, mimosa, and sangria carafes go for $18, Bloody Mary’s or Screwdrivers $20, or a bottle of champagne $18…which, as us New Yorkers know all too well, is typically what ONE drink at a trendy restaurant goes for these days! The menu offers your standard breakfast fare (eggs and french toast, anyone?), or if you’re feeling in the mood for Italian, there’s plenty of that to choose from, as well. And a bonus for nice weather brunching? There’s outdoor seating!

Regional

The boozy brunch deal at Regional goes like so: buy a meal and one beverage, and all refills of said beverage are on them! This may just be one of the best deals yet, as meals range around $12 (for a pizza, pasta dish, or typical breakfast fare), and Bloody’s and mimosas go for $8…so that’s $20, all in! We’ll take it!

Bistro Ten 18

So you said you want all inclusive? Bistro Ten 18 heard you loud and clear! They offer their weekend brunch with unlimited Bloody’s and mimosas (plus food) for $22.50. Now, this doesn’t apply to everything on the menu, but there’s enough choices to pick from that go with the deal. If a fresh, local, American bistro is what you’re craving, this is the spot.

Amity Hall

Saving the best for last? Well, if you’re a fan of Nutella stuffed french toast like I am, then yes, this is the spot you want to go to! Amity Hall offers an unlimited brunch with Bloody’s and mimosas and delicious dishes for $29.95. Now if only they’d make the Nutella french toast unlimited!

As the old saying goes, a dog is man’s best friend. What it doesn’t mention though is the high level of attention and care that best friend needs! In a perfect world, New Yorkers would be able to walk their dogs, bathe/groom them, and watch their every move. However, most pet owners tend to be very busy, and end up requesting help from a third party. Thankfully, many dog care businesses do an amazing job of pampering your dog! If you’re a Manhattan or Upper West Side resident, take a look at leading NYC dog care services that ensure your dog is living luxuriously.

Dog Walking

Every dog owner wants their pet to get the best and most walks possible, and the following dog walking services definitely keep that in mind.

NYC Pooch sets out to find out everything about you and your dog’s routine from the moment you reach out to them. They’ll conduct fun exercises, implement a healthy lifestyle, and reinforce good habits. How? They listen, because that’s what good dog walkers do. As a result, they’ll know your dog’s personality, peculiarities, and preferred places like the back of their hand. They even send daily Pup Reports™ and pictures from the walk so you never miss out on your doggy’s life.

Another convenient premier dog walking service is Luke Dogwalker NYC, available solely for Upper West Side residents. The company aims to develop a close relationship with you and your pup: Each of their 11 walkers cares for the same 8-12 pups every day, and walks 2 dogs at a time. Luke Dogwalker aims to help a new dog charity every month through their Giving Bark initiative: The organization donates $50 and gives an extra $1 for each client who also gives money (of any amount). If that’s not enticing enough, their NYC K9 Events webpage lists any dog-themed or dog-friendly events in NYC.

Let’s not forget about King Pup, whose fully trained and experienced dog walkers work around the clock to provide the most dependable, secure, and loving service in NYC. For over 10 years, the company has been running with the highest standards of care and safety. Like NYC Pooch, King Pup doesn’t walk dogs in packs. If you’re a frequent traveler or work long hours, utilize the at-home pet sitting or puppy sitting services.

Full-Service Dog Care

Most owners seek the whole package, and the below places offer that without jeopardizing the quality of their service.

The Spot Experience is the first choice to consider. The staff is an all-star team of technicians and animal behaviorists recruited from the veterinary community, who undergo 80 hours of rigorous training before they are certified. The handlers promote positive behavior, socialization, and exercise while eliminating undesirable tendencies. You don’t have to worry about any barking or aggression – they interview every dog prior to admission. Their facilities even have high resolution webcams for 24/7 viewing of your pet! Other services include:

  • cage-free overnight stays (also includes webcam viewing)
  • dog walking by highly trained professionals (with GPS tracking!)
  • a variety of grooms
  • all kinds of training
  • in-home or at-spa sessions
  • puppy packages using positive reinforcement

The second best full-service dog care facility is no doubt Biscuits & Bath. Each of their locations has an on-site vet from their partners at NY Veterinary Practice. Doggy having a bad day? No worries, they’ll detect any sign of discomfort and treat them as needed. You can purchase Biscuits & Bath offers gift certificates for any dog!

funny facial expressions on colorful easter eggs

Easter in NYC is welcomed in a myriad of ways: Some of us attend church gatherings for familiar faces coupled with relaxing spiritual music, some participate in big egg hunts around the city to ignite their adventurous side, and the rest stock up on chocolate eggs as well as festive bonnets and/or flower bouquets. We’ve been seeing warm weather and sunnier skies this week, meaning Spring and Easter will coincide once again. After all, it’s simply blasphemous to welcome a colorful holiday with a gloomy winter! Regardless of the weather and your traditions, take a look at 6 Easter activities in NYC you and your family/friends can enjoy.

Easter Parade and Bonnet Festival – Sunday, March 27th

Starting 10 a.m. till 4 p.m., watch people parade along 5th avenue from 49th to 57th Street in creative Easter bonnets (some as big as the New York Skyline), matched with outfits ranging from elegant to outrageous. The famous festival began in the mid-1800s, when upper-class ladies would stroll in their extravagant Easter outfits after church service. Since then, it’s become less of a parade and more of a vibrant neighborhood party.

Prepare to be overwhelmed with creativity, as several people will ‘push the envelope’ with their fashion styles. Bring your bonnet and march along; you’ll realize afterwards why Easter Sunday is truly Sunday Best. If you’re just an observer, you’ll have the best view from St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

Easter Services at St. Patrick’s Cathedral

If you’re attending the parade and enjoy church services, stop by St. Patrick’s Cathedral. After all, it’s the church with the biggest audience and numerous Easter Masses and Holy Week Services, including 8 on Easter Sunday. Only the 10:15 a.m. Mass requires tickets, but everyone is welcome to the others. A lot of history and beauty lies in this holy sanctuary, so don’t miss out on it.

Easter Egg Scavenger Hunts

You’re never too old to embrace your inner detective and embark on a scavenger hunt. The high number of ‘hunters’ in NYC makes the challenge even more exciting. We definitely recommend any of the following egg hunts if you like solving clues and know your way around Manhattan (or Google Maps).

POGO Events’ Amazing Easter Egg Scavenger Hunt will be held on Sunday, March 27 at Slattery’s Midtown Pub from 2 p.m.- 5 p.m. Assemble your team and book your tickets quickly for a mere $25. You can choose between 2 options: Adults-only and Family-friendly. Winners will receive tickets to Quiet Clubbing, Shake Rattle & Roll and other local activities. Don’t be discouraged if your peers or family members aren’t interested, since individual participants will be assigned a team.

Searching for something more suitable for children? The 9th Annual Egg Hunt at Carl Schurz Park is a top choice. Enter the park at East 87th and East End Avenue to prepare for a continuous wave of egg hunts running 1:10 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. on Saturday, March 19th. Your kids will meet the Carl Schurz Bunny in the Upper East Side, and be entertained by the tunes of East Side West Side Music Together while waiting in line. Goodies include an egg collection bag and glitter cheek, or hand stamp.

Another child-friendly activity would be the Annual Egg Hunt by Think ‘N’ Fun (TNF), which is happening on Saturday, March 26th (the day before Easter Sunday) at Riverside Park. Choose one of the four Hunt Waves, and take advantage of the $21 ticket price before it increases to $25 after March 12th. Every participant will receive a special TNF basket for egg collecting, a photo session with the Easter bunny, snacks and beverages, and a hand/cheek painting stamp with a cute accessory. Happy hunting! May the odds forever be in your favor.

Easter Eggstravaganza Children’s Workshop

For children between 4 to 8 years old, The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine will be hosting its popular annual children’s workshop on egg decorating on March 19th! Kids can create vibrant patterns on eggs and build a nest for them on the 10 A.M. or 2 P.M. session. This is an amusing learning opportunity and allows for some one-on-one bonding. Remember to bring two hard-boiled eggs per child. 1 ticket costs only $10, but we highly recommend you purchase in advance online or by calling (866) 811-4111.

Room decorated with red

Given the current weather, it may seem like Spring is a long way ahead, but March 20 will be here before you know it! Interested in revamping the décor of your living room just in time for its arrival? Then you’ve come to the right place! After some online digging, we found so many interior decorating tips to make your NYC apartment elegant and stylish, that we couldn’t fit them in one post! Here is the first set.

Beige fabric curtains hung in a white-colored living room

Get Fabric Curtains

Why not add something to your standard blinds and spice up your windows? Some fabric curtains, like those beige ones above, will give an elegant touch to your living room. According to Young Huh of Young Huh Interior Design, “Fabric curtains immediately add luxurious structure and color to a room.” We couldn’t agree more. Make sure you’re using light colors that match the walls’ color, as this would give the illusion of a bigger and brighter room.

A dining room next to a living room

Add Splashes of Color

There’s beauty in simplicity. If you think the above look includes a lot of dollar signs, you couldn’t be more wrong: It’s all about buying the right items and sorting them creatively. Basic requirements include floral decorations, beige lamp, black couch with some pillows, and paintings or portraits on the walls. You can definitely go with other items and color schemes, but always get a second opinion.

Living room with teal couches and a blue carpet

Keep Scaling In Mind

Ever been to a tiny apartment that has large sofas topped with giant pillows? We feel your pain. That’s why scaling is everything. In fact, smaller or moderately-sized furnishings are what you need if you’re trying to make your apartment look larger. Choose a bright color (red, blue, purple, etc.) for your couch, and then align matching pillows across it. The reverse would apply if your couch has a basic, toned-down color (grey, beige, black, or white). So, please spread the word and end every decorator’s nightmare. Not to forget, pulling the furniture away from the wall will make your living room look more open and inviting.

Invest In a Rug

According to Owner and Principal designer of Amber Interiors, Amber Lewis, rugs are “artwork for the floor!” Just like the one in the previous picture, a colorful and patterned rug gives a room many dimensions and an element of sophistication, thus separating it from a one-dimensional one. Let the rug hunt begin!

purple curtains open to show a large living room with a circular mirror at the end

Hang a Mirror

Mirror, mirror, on the wall who’s the fairest apartment of them all? Why yours of course (with the right mirror)! We already established that a bigger room is a better room, so hang a big mirror opposite your window to see light reflected across the space. Don’t limit yourself to a certain shape either; a mirror can be trendy whether it’s circular, squared, rectangular, or even triangular!

Indoor green pot plant placed in front a window

Add a Plant

A little greenery always makes a room fresher and brighter, and that’s why plants shouldn’t be underestimated. If there’s little to no floor space, you can always try a hanging plant, or place one a shelf.

Large, black-and-white, wooden bookcase with a TV in the bottom corner and small figurines in the middle.

Get The Right Bookcase

Problem: You’re a bookworm having trouble finding space for a bookshelf. Solution: Purchase the bookcase that’s just the right size for you and your apartment! Place your lamps, picture frames, and books without overcrowding your space. So long bulky bookcases!

Which decorating tip will you go with for your apartment? We’re eager to read your answers in the comments!

February 14th is coming, and all the lovebirds anxiously await. However, single people should not be left out, especially those in New York City. What makes this Valentine’s Day more special is that it immediately precedes President’s Day, leaving you with a long weekend full of various activities. Heart-shaped chocolate and restaurants are nice, but why not try some new things? No matter what your relationship status is, check out the below recipe for a legendary Valentine’s Day experience.

eternal-sunshine-movie

Play Any of These Unconventional Romantic Movies (Netflix & Chill)

That’s right, we don’t mean sappy romantic films such as A Walk To RememberThe Notebook, or Serenity! Love comes in all shapes and sizes, and some motion pictures highly utilize this to their advantage. If you want to watch a couple that had a bad breakup and consequently erased each other from their memories, go for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, starring Kate Winslet and Jim Carrey. Aside from winning an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, the film effortlessly blends romance, comedy, drama, and science fiction with a nonlinear narrative. The main characters might have forgotten one another, but you’ll remember this film for years to come.

in-her-shoes

In Her Shoes is a hilarious and dramatic portrayal of the bond between two completely different sisters (who wear the same shoe size), played by Cameron Diaz and Toni Collette, and how they reconnect with their grandmother (Shirley MacLaine). Aside from a stellar cast, one of the film’s best features is its realism, particularly when the sisters argue. Although it is lengthy for a ‘dramedy’, the scenes are appropriately paced to showcase the layers of each character.

tumblr_inline_mutkn7yaUC1qdnwyk

Another one-of-a-kind romance movie would definitely be the delightful About Time. The plot revolves around Tim Lake (Domhnall Gleeson), who possesses the gift of time travel (like his father and all the men in his family), and uses it to win the heart of Mary (Rachel McAdams). Cheesy? Don’t be fooled. The main storyline is the friendship between Tim and his father (Bill Nighy), revealed by the latter’s time travel lessons and events following his terminal cancer diagnosis. Nevertheless, the film maintains a light, bittersweet mood while squeezing in a few laughs. For those who consider Sunday a family day, watch this with your folks.

your-love-our-musical

Watch Your Love, Our Musical!

Are you a musical fan in need of a hilarious comedy show? Don’t miss this musical-comedy improv at Littlefield on Saturday, February 13! The talented and witty pair, Rebecca Vigil and Evan Kaufman, select a couple from the crowd and ask them how they fell in love. Then, they use the unusual experiences from the story to produce an impromptu musical performance. Buy your tickets now for $10-12 here!

times-square-viewFeel The Love In Times Square

Whether you’re looking for a new romance, planning to propose to your longtime partner, or simply love witnessing romantic gestures, head over to Times Square, Duffy Square this Sunday in order to see live marriage proposals, vow renewals, and wedding ceremonies! Not to forget, you can kiss in private using the Heart of Hearts kaleidoscopic kissing booths. Finding love in the big city just got easier.

70s-slow-jams-beacon

Slow Jam The Night Away

Go back to the good ol’ ’70s on Saturday with this musical event presenting five supreme soul artists: The Stylistics (“You Are Everything,” “Break Up to Make Up,” and “You Make Me Feel Brand New”), Dramatics (“In the Rain” and “Whatcha See is Whatcha Get”), New Birth (“Dream Merchant,” “It’s Been A Long Time,” “I Can Understand It”), Ray, Goodman and Brown (“Special Lady”), and Jobie Thomas’s Enchantment (“Gloria,”“Sunshine” and “It’s You That I Need”). Upper West Side residents who enjoy the powerful and social messages of soul music have to immediately reserve for the 3pm or the 8pm show at The Beacon Theatre. Prices range from $49.50 to $79.50, which is a great deal given the amount and quality of performers!

bloody-valentines-dayHave a Bloody Valentine

Horror fans (or anti-Valentine activists), add Varick Street to your weekend destination! Blood Manor, the city’s leading haunted attraction, is organizing the 2016 Bloody Valentine from Friday until Sunday. Enjoy scaring your friend/sweetheart while walking through the haunted house. You can also trade candy and flowers for bloody hatchets plus gore-stained chainsaws. American Horror Story and The Walking Dead have got nothing on this! Several ticket packages include one black rose in memory of your ill-fated love. Click here to see the event times for each day and purchase your tickets (Tip: Prices are reduced by $5 for both General Admission and RIP Express Entry!).

Really? It's kind of hard to tell, isn't it? After #neverendingwinter2015, I'll believe it when I see it...BUT there are increasingly positive signs that soon everyone will be complaining about how hot and muggy is it. In the meantime, however, New York is host to a wonderful variety of flower shows that are sure to put a little Spring in your step. Here are some of our recommendations.

Cherry blossom trees in full pink bloom during the Brooklyn Botanic Garden's festival

Weird (and amazing!) how it went from biting freezingness and driving snowstorm to glorious warmth and hope and comfort over the course of, like, 48 hours this week. But we’ll take it! Because even though it will likely be another few weeks before some of these grime-coated ice mounds actually disappear, it right now seems certain that, once again, spring and sunshine and naps on the grass will all actually happen. In celebration of this inevitable and yet always-so-wonderfully-surprising change of seasons, the city’s great gardens have just opened, or are preparing to open, the best New York City flower shows for 2015, so here’s a sneak peek at everything you can expect from the blooming delights.

Orchids in bloom inside the 2015 Orchid Show in New York City

The 2015 Orchid Show at New York Botanical Garden: Chandeliers [Now through April 19th]

This New York Botanical Garden’s Orchid Show is always pretty spectacular, but this year they’re trying something a bit different which, from what I hear, is both more creative in terms of design AND even more beautiful than ever. The 2015 Orchid Show is called “Chandeliers” for its dozens of brand-new hanging creations, including simple baskets, riotous living columns, and the exhibition’s show-stopper, a massive, star-shaped “chandelier” exploding with literally hundreds of individual plants. Macy's Flower Show: Art In Bloom starting March 22nd through April 4th

Macy’s Flower Show 2015: Art In Bloom [March 22nd through April 4th]

The annual Macy’s Flower Show tends to be a bit of a mob scene, mostly because you’re actually inside Macy’s, which already always feels pretty packed to this shopper. But if you live or work near Herald Square, it seems like it’d be worth checking out to see what the Macy’s designers do with this year’s theme, Art In Bloom. On the store’s main floor you’ll find the Pop Art Garden, the Portrait Gallery (famous faces in flowers, presumably), the Surrealist Garden, the Impressionist Garden, and a whole bunch more. And on opening day, in the first of many special events through the show’s two-week run, Martha Stewart herself will be on hand with, oddly, a cooking demonstration, as opposed to, say, a floral arrangement master class. ; More info here.

Cherry Blossom Season and Sakura Matsuri 2015 at Brooklyn Botanic Garden [April 25th & 26th]

Finally and, as usual, the spring event for which I’m most excited about, is the Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s 2015 Sakura Matsuri festival, celebrating both traditional and contemporary Japanese culture and the culmination of the weeks-long Cherry Blossom Season. As always the BBG is breaking out its ingenious “CherryWatch Blossom Status Map”, for real-time updates on how many of its nearly 150 trees are in bloom on any given day. But for amazing cosplay, performances of all kinds, and a huge party atmosphere, the weekend of Sakura Matsuri, is the time to go. More info here.

Four & Twenty Blackbirds

We’re heading into the heart of pie season around these parts, so the time has come to give away our secret: Pie at Four and Twenty Blackbirds, in Gowanus, is the absolute best in town. We know… we know… we used to swear by First Prize Pies pie shop, part of Roni-Sue’s Chocolates in the Essex Street Market, and those are still very, very good (call them the second best in town). But really? We’ve been totally blown away multiple times in the past few months by sisters Melissa and Emily Elsen, the pie magicians at Four and Twenty Blackbirds. In fact, we’ve already placed our Thanksgiving pie order–one Bittersweet Chocolate Pecan, one Brown Butter Pumpkin, please–but will almost certainly visit their pretty, homey Brooklyn bakery for a slice or two before then as well.

Four & Twenty Blackbirds

When you take your seat at Four and Twenty Blackbirds for a slice of pie and maybe a cup of coffee, there’s no way of knowing which of their heavenly treats will be on the menu–they only have one oven, and make everything including the crust, by hand–but you can’t go wrong here. That said, if Salty Honey pie is available, get it. This is an extraordinary creation, all rich and gooey and delicious, sort of like the more sophisticated cousin of Christina Tosi’s Crack Pie at Momofuku Milk Bar. This summer we also swooned over the delicious pie shop’s Balsamic Strawberry Pie, in which the Elsen sisters hit the exact perfect balance between tart and sweet, chewy and flaky.

The Best Apple Pie in NYC is at this Bakery in Brooklyn, NY

Four and Twenty Blackbirds even got us loving apple pie again, with their Salted Caramel take on that usually tedious staple. Again, it’s all in the balance–between crust and filling; among salt, tart and sweet; between soft and crunchy–and Four and Twenty Blackbirds nails it every time. And the Four and Twenty Blackbird’s Brooklyn bakery is welcoming and cozy, all soft light and wooden tables. True, that corner of Gowanus, like many corners in this area of Brooklyn, NY, is notable more for its gritty industrial character than its country charm, but once you’re inside Four and Twenty Blackbirds, with a piece of the best apple pie (or any of their creations!) set in front of you, suddenly nothing else really matters.

High Line New York Social Soup

We had such a great time this past Saturday at the High Line Social Soup Experiment, eating excellent bowls of soup with a hundred other people. Everyone was happy and chatty and seated at a long communal table. Sounds great, right? It was. And it was only $5 a person! Spearheaded by a group within the High Line park family called High Line Food, and enjoying sponsorship from the likes of Eater.com, Edible Manhattan, the Green Table restaurant in the Chelsea Market, and Harlem’s Hot Bread Kitchen, this “Social Soup Experiment” was such a big hit with those of us lucky enough to go that we are hoping it will be the first of many such events…and that you will be able to join us next time.

High Line New York: Building Community Around the High Line Park Project

High Line New York Social Soup

Here’s how the Social Soup Experiment on the New York High Line worked. We first heard about the event via a post on Eater.com, and though details were a little vague, we thought: Soup? High Line? Five bucks? Sign us up! We snatched up some tickets for the second of two seatings, and showed up on the appropriately fall-ish feeling Saturday afternoon. And though we figured it would be good time, with probably some decent food, the Social Soup Experiment on the High Line surpassed all of our expectations.

First of all, the soup itself was fantastic, a ridiculously hearty farro and bean creation with at least a half dozen kinds of beans, lots of vegetables (kale, tomatoes, onions), herbs (including rosemary), all given a nice lively little kick by the Roman-esque inclusion of a spicy olive oil. The chef was Mona Talbot, who recently published her second collection of soup recipes, Zuppe, and she should take a deep bow for her key contribution to the Social Soup Experiment on the NYC High Line.

Slow Food USA Challenge Appealed to the New York High Line

But there was more to the meal, too, including two kinds of first-rate bread from Hot Bread Kitchen, a crock of fresh butter, and a perfect, tart-and-sweet apple from the Hudson Valley. The volunteer servers and staffers were friendly and helpful, the soup bowl was bottomless (we had thirds), our table companions amiable, and, as mentioned, the whole thing cost only $5, a figure, by the way, that is not random.
As the High Line’s Melina Shannon-DiPietro explains, “we were inspired by Slow Food USA’s Five Dollar Challenge. The idea here is that you can eat really well, you can source good ingredients, have a luscious meal, really enjoy it with friends.” And the Social Soup Experiment at NYC’s High Line Park–supposedly only the first in what they (and we!) hope will be a series of communal eating events on the High Line–succeeded, wildly, on all counts.

The High Line Social Soup Experiment was a one-day-only feeding, but apparently High Line Food plans on hosting a series of similar High Line Park New York events in the future. The best way to find out about them will probably be via the High Line’s email newsletter, which you can sign up for at the High Line website.

One look at Olio Pizza e Piu and it's easy to see why this West Village newcomer was something of an instant hit this summer. With its wide-open frontage and double row of outside tables, located just off a bustling stretch of Sixth Avenue, Olio Pizza NYC is close enough to the throngs to feel the energy, but set back enough on that wide Greenwich Avenue sidewalk for comfortable spectating. A young, lively crowd has been enjoying the vantage point–and the extensive cocktail menu–since July. Question is: is Olio Pizza NYC serving good enough food to sustain the early momentum once winter sets in, and those big front windows seal the party inside?

The answer is: yes and no. We've been to Olio Pizza e Piu a couple of times now, with wildly different degrees of satisfaction. Our first visit was late, after 10:00 on a Saturday night, and we were impressed both by the not-obnoxious, professional attitude as well as with our meal. Our Emiliana salad, for example, was bright and fresh, the pile of arugula generously blanketed by a decent Prosciutto di Parma and lots of sharp parmesan. Most important, the pizza, wood-fired Neapolitan style, delivered. We went with the Capricciosa, which was heavy-on-the-cheese creation, just on the right side of messy, covered with chunks of ham, mushrooms, artichokes, olives. A little wet in the center, yes, but the fire-charred crust was chewy and salty and it all worked…. which is why we returned a few days later to Olio Pizza NYC, unfortunately with different results.

Our second visit started off poorly, when we caught the host in a blatant lie about an empty table, which he tried to backpedal away from with another, equally poorly-told lie, only to be saved by a waitress, who sat us right away. The service was pretty much a disaster all around this time: charm, cuteness, and the ability to grow an excellent three-day beard can't cover up cold food, dirty plates, repeated requests for basics (a fork, some water, our dinner) unanswered. But all that would have been excused had the food been adequate, which it was not. This time the Emiliana salad was limp, with about half the amount of meat and cheese as were trained to expect from our previous visit. The waitress blamed the "new menu" on the new austerity.

The Funghi pizza was cheesy enough, and the crust just as chewy and charred as before, but cold pizza is only fun when you're 16 years old (if then), and there was maybe a dime's worth of bland supermarket mushrooms scattered on top, making us wish we had stuck with the plain Margherita and saved two bucks. Worse was the Lasagna, new on the menu so maybe they'll figure it out eventually, but this was a soggy, no-flavor, unbaked waste of time. We'll probably be back in a month or so to give Olio Pizza NYC one more chance, because good pizza in a spacious, comfortable setting in that neighborhood is definitely something to root for. Until then, Olio Pizza seems pretty dicey.
