For a festive place to dine out in the month of December, look no further than Pete’s Tavern. Located Downtown, this legendary restaurant has been around practically as long as New York City herself (only a slight exaggeration, as the building has been around since 1829, and the first drink sold here was in 1864!) With all the trendy restaurants popping up all over the city these days, it’s comforting to have a tried-and-true spot that keeps people coming back for great food, warm service, and (dare we say) a reputation for being a spot where everyone knows your name.

The Vibe

Why pick December to visit Pete’s Tavern? We can’t think of many other spots that get in the holiday spirit quite like Pete’s! They’re famous for their festive holiday decorations, from the outside in. The windows display a fun animated winter village, while the bar area is completely covered in red Christmas lights over the entire ceiling. It’s sure to qualify you for best Instagram photo of the season!

Along with their holiday decor, Pete’s has plenty of seating at both tables and booths, so is quite comfy. The food is Italian American with generous (read: huge) portions, and they update their beverage menu seasonally to keep the best of the season coming at you. Hot toddies, apple cider, and maple bourbon old-fashions will keep you toasty all month long!

And don’t let the word “tavern” scare you off if you have kiddos-it’s actually very kid friendly. They even put butcher paper over the tables, making for the perfect canvas for your child’s Frosty the Snowman and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer art portraits.

The Food

Pete’s Tavern is open for lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch. You’ll appreciate this place because it has food with that delicious home cooked quality, but lacks the high prices of many other restaurants in the area. For example, you can get a bowl of the soup of the day for only $3.95, or their legendary O. Henry chicken wings for $9.75. (Fun fact: O. Henry frequented this spot at the turn of the century, so you’re literally stomping on his old stomping grounds as you eat here.) For entrees, you can get a homemade meat lasagna for $11.50, or go big with the grilled 16 ounce New York Sirloin Steak for $25.50. Their brunch menu allows you to pick any entree off the menu (think: burgers, omelets, avocado toast), coffee or tea, and an adult beverage for $21.95. And for dessert, consider seasonal favorites such as hot pecan pie or baked apple crumb (both $7.95).

Good To Know

If you’re looking for the perfect spot to throw a holiday get together, Pete’s Tavern has got you covered. They have a party room (dubbed the Speakeasy Room) with many great options available, from a traditional coursed sit-down dinner, to a buffet, to passed hors d’oeuvres, to brunch, to even the option of having a cash bar.

They also have specials on different nights of the week. Monday evenings, you can enjoy a pasta dish, salad, and glass of wine or beer all for $13.95 (maybe just the best deal in the city?!) And on Wednesday evenings, you can choose a seafood dish served with a salad for $18.95.

Pete’s Tavern is a close choice for Glenwood residents living at Barclay Tower or Liberty Plaza. Perhaps pair it with a trip to the Union Square Holiday Market for a cup of hot cider to really get into the Christmas spirit!

That's what you can expect to find at our restaurant of the month, Divya's Kitchen! Keep warm this November with delicious food that will leave you feeling great.

November is a time we’re all craving warm, nourishing foods that can satisfy us from the inside out. To treat yourself to a delicious meal that accomplishes just that, head on over to Divya’s Kitchen. Located Downtown, Divya’s was awarded the “Diner’s Choice Award” and chosen as one of the “10 Best Restaurants Overall in Manhattan” in 2018 by OpenTable, and with so many restaurants contending in this city, that alone speaks volumes. Read on as to why we’re headed to Divya’s this autumn, and why you should, too!

table setting with rustic features
Divya’s Kitchen, photo has been cropped.

The Vibe

Divya’s can best be described as both cozy and elegant…making it an ideal date night spot for fall, especially for Glenwood residents living at Barclay Tower and Liberty Plaza. A warm candlelight falls over each table, as you tuck into comfy white chairs straight out of a Restoration Hardware showroom. There’s plenty of greenery keeping the space warm and inviting, along with beautiful white washed exposed brick walls.

The cuisine is quite unique, even for New York standards. Divya’s dishes out vegetarian, Ayurvedic meals, modified for 2018 living. What does that mean, exactly? Well, Ayurveda is an ancient form of holistic medicine from India, which follows the belief that what you eat has much to do with how you feel. Using seasonal ingredients and healing spices, Divya’s prides itself on creating dishes that will make everyone leave the restaurant feeling their best.

The Food

Although the Ayurvedic way of cooking stems from India, the dishes at Divya’s range wildly. To start with, consider a warm and hearty soup to fit the current season. Perhaps the Creamy Vegetable Soup, made with taro root, broccoli, cauliflower, and zucchini ($9). It’s not only vegetarian, but also gluten free! As a main, the Lasagna can’t be beat, made with cashew milk béchamel, broccoli, carrots, spinach, fresh mozzarella, house-made fresh cheese, and basil-parsley pesto ($23). For dessert, consider the decadent Rose Chocolate Mousse, which is prepared with raw cacao, Irish moss, coconut oil, almond milk, and sweetened with dates ($8). Even the dessert here is good for the body and soul!

Another option Divya’s has is their three course Prix Fixe, which lets you choose a starter, main, and dessert for $32.

Due to the healthy nature of the restaurant, alcoholic beverages are not available here. But fear not, they have plenty of nutritious mocktails to choose from, such as ginger mint limeade and grapefruit soda, all made from scratch in house ($7). Their delightful tea blends are a wonderful after dinner choice, ranging from Heart Opening Rose to Peace of Mind Peppermint ($5). With wellness all the current craze in NYC, you’ll be the talk of the town amongst your friends once introducing them to this culinary gem.

Good To Know

Along with being a warm and healthy choice to spend a night out this autumn, Divya’s also offers many different kinds of cooking classes. From an intense 6-month training course that spans 11 weekends (if you’re really serious about learning the art of Ayurvedic cooking!), to one off “workshops with a meal” events, to vegetarian and seasonal cooking classes. For example, their upcoming Healthy Holiday Indulgence class will teach you how to craft a menu consisting of:

 • Cranberry Orange Drink
 • Polenta Bites
 • How to Make Fresh Cream Cheese
 • Basil Parsley Pesto
 • Lasagna with Broccolini, Carrots and Spinach
 • Almond Milk Bechamel
 • Chocolate Cake

The classes are $125 for one person, or $225 for two, and include a full meal at the end. In addition, Divya’s also regularly hosts private dinners in their loft space, which is a great alternative to holiday entertaining this year if you have a houseful of visitors and don’t feel like slaving over the stove. Not to mention, it’s guaranteed to be a healthy meal that won’t leave everyone in a turkey (or even faux-turkey) coma. Something we can all be grateful for!

With their contemporary menu and upscale dining rooms, it's no wonder the restaurant has been recommended by publications such as Thrillist and NBC.

Nestled in the heart of Midtown Manhattan is a truly upscale and phenomenal experience in Indian food, Indian Accent. Situated on 56th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues, this fine dining spot is convenient for Glenwood residents residing in either Midtown East (at places such as The Bamford or The Bristol, which are just down the street) or the Westside (at The Encore or The Regent.)

The restaurant’s menu takes a modern spin on nostalgic Indian dishes, which makes for a truly innovative approach to Indian cuisine, like you’ve probably never seen before. Whether you’re a fan of Indian food, or appreciate an exquisitely done tasting menu, Indian Accent should be on your radar!

Indian Accent Inside
Indian Accent NYC

The Vibe

Indian Accent has both indoor and outdoor seating, making it a perfect spot to go before the summer is gone for good. The bar has gorgeous minimal flower arrangements, the walls are draped in a tasteful gold, and chairs are a luxe purple velvet. It’s all very understated and classy, and the type of spot you’ll want to dress accordingly for. Lunch/brunch is served from 12pm to 2pm, and dinner service begins at 5pm.

The staff are very knowledgeable about the dishes, wine pairings, and regions of India certain menu items stem from. It makes for a fascinating conversation throughout your meal. You can also be assured that no matter the food allergy or restriction (i.e. gluten-free, vegan, or an intolerance to spicy foods), they will be able to guide you to the best dishes for your stomach and palate.

The Food

Depending on when you go to dine, you’ll have the option of different menus. At dinner, they serve a prix fixe menu in the dining room and a la carte menus at the bar and patio. A pre-theater two course prix fixe menu is available from 5pm to 6pm. At lunch, they offer both a la carte and prix fixe menus. And for brunch they offer an a la carte menu and a shared feast menu for the table.

Appetizers of note include sweet potato with starfruit and crispy okra, as well as grilled summer corn smothered in chutney butter. Popular mid-courses are tiger prawns with Indian sorrel chutney and peanut sago vada, as well as sweet pickle ribs with sundried mango and onion seeds. The mains they are wildly famous for are their paper roast dosa with mushrooms and water chestnuts (perfect for vegetarians), or chicken malai tikka with green chili cream, sugar snap peas, and summer truffle, perfect for meat eaters! And finally, their delicate dessert makhan malai with saffron milk, rose petal jaggery brittle and almonds is not to be missed.

They give you the option to choose three courses for $75, four courses for $90, or the chef’s tasting menu for $125, and if you choose to do it with the wine pairing it’s an additional $85. Everything is beautifully plated, and it’s a tough call whether you’re about to dive into delightful Indian cuisine or a masterful work of art that should be hanging in nearby MOMA.

Restaurant of the Month: August https://www.glenwoodnyc.com/manhattan-living/restaurant-of-the-month-august/ Mon, 06 Aug 2018 09:21:00 +0000 http://glenwoodstage.wpengine.com/?p=19776 This month's restaurant of the month, August, offers a sense of solitude on an otherwise busy street. Enjoy a tasty meal in a charming garden, just like one that you might expect to find in the Hudson Valley. This summer spot is perfect for a few moments of peace to mellow out your busy lifestyle!

The post Restaurant of the Month: August appeared first on NYC Luxury Apartments for Rent | Glenwood Management.

]]>
For the month of August, we’re guiding you to a restaurant on the Upper East Side that’s called none other than…wait for it…August! Located at 791 Lexington Avenue, August is a charming little spot nestled among an otherwise busy stretch of the street. If you find yourself in the area running errands, leisurely shopping, or are just looking for a place close to your Glenwood home to have a fabulous dining experience, look no further than this perfect end of summer spot.

Photo: August

The Vibe

Unlike the rest of the block that leads to a busy New York-feeling, when you step into August it’s instantly a sense of warmth and calm. The quaint restaurant boasts reclaimed wood, leather chairs, exposed brick, a touch of twinkle lights, and windows and doors that are flung open throughout the summer. (Hint: make a reservation to sit near the front garden, it’s magical during the summertime!) It feels as though you’ve stepped into a perfect little restaurant you would find in the Hudson Valley rather than the Upper East Side. Such a treat!

One of the true highlights of August is the impeccable service you’ll receive. The staff is genuinely warm and welcoming, food is served efficiently, and you feel more like you’re a guest at a close friend’s house rather than dining out at a NYC restaurant. From the bartender to the waitress to the busboys, you’ll be pleased to find pleasant smiles and attitudes all around.

The Food

August features New American cuisine featuring the best seasonal picks. They are open for brunch, lunch, and dinner. Their lunch menu features a special where you can pick two dishes for $25. Whether you go for a comfort food option of fried green tomatoes and a salmon burger, or choose the slightly healthier version of their roasted tomato soup (a cult favorite!) and avocado toast, you won’t be disappointed.

Dinner options include favorites such as Hot Cornbread with sun dried tomato butter ($9) or Charred Octopus with hummus, chickpeas, cucumber, tomato, and mint ($19) to start. Follow that up with a seasonal entree that’s either vegetarian, such as the dish “Our Amazing Mushroom”, with roasted hen of the woods mushrooms, cipollini onions, tarragon, and sherry vinegar reduction ($24), or a meat entree such as the Duckling with Peaches, finished off with chutney, beluga lentils, and swiss chard ($39). A side of Brussels Sprouts with sriracha, honey and marcona almonds ($10) rounds out the meal perfectly.

But wait! You can’t leave until you’ve shared at least one of their famous desserts. Customer favorites include Toffee Date Pudding with caramelized bananas and white chocolate cream, or the classic Warm Chocolate Lava Cake with vanilla ice cream, both $12.

Praise For August

While we’re clearly fans of this Upper East Side gem, you don’t have to exclusively take our word for it! Conde Nast Traveler called August one of the most romantic restaurants in NYC, and bathed in candle light and twinkles we agree this would make an excellent place to go for a date night. And, while the UES isn’t as known for its dining scene as Downtown Manhattan, Town and Country Magazine featured August as one of their restaurants that “prove the Upper East Side is cool again.”

And situated on Lexington Avenue between 61st and 62nd Streets, it’s just as accessible for UES residents at The Fairmont to get to as it is for Midtown East residents at The Bamford and The Bristol.

Whether you’re going there to celebrate something special, popping in to fuel up after a trip to Bloomingdale’s, or are just looking for the perfect neighborhood spot to become your new go-to restaurant, we have no doubt that once you try August, you’ll be going there again and again.

Enjoy a beautiful meal under the July sun, with some stunning views to admire while you wait for your food.

Last month, we shared with you one of Manhattan’s key rooftop dining spots to experience during the summer season, Serra. This month, we’re taking it one step further and showcasing a restaurant that not only provides tons of outdoor seating (which is saying a lot for NYC when space is so rare and valuable), but the restaurant is also right on the East River, giving you gorgeous water views while you eat. What’s the restaurant, you ask? Why, Industry Kitchen!

The Vibe

Located Downtown, Industry Kitchen is nestled in the Financial District by the historic South Street Seaport. The restaurant is a whopping 5,000 square feet (basically unheard of as far as Manhattan restaurants go) and can accommodate up to 300 guests, meaning you’ll never have to wait long for an outdoor table overlooking the water. All seats here are good seats, and deliver views of the Brooklyn skyline, as well as both the Brooklyn and Williamsburg bridges.

The restaurant boasts an industrial vintage vibe, using materials such as reclaimed wood and raw concrete. There’s floor to ceiling windows, so even if you do choose to sit indoors you can still appreciate the views. For true foodies, you have the option of sitting at a table which overlooks the kitchen, so you can see the food prep and magic in the making.

Luxury Living at Tribeca Bridge Tower

The Food

If we didn’t have you at the views, we’re fairly certain the food will do it for you! This is a spot that features fabulous all-American dishes, catering to those brunch goers that can’t live without their avocado toast ($14) as well as lunchers who appreciate a pot of mussels soaked in garlic and white wine for their al fresco meal ($18).

After your starters, you’ll want to try the famous Industry Signature Salad, combining dill, parsley, tomato, fennel, carrot, watermelon radish, and basil jalapeno vinaigrette ($12). Pair this with one of their legendary wood fired pizzas, such as the Bacon Sweet Potato, with cheddar, rosemary, chipotle aioli, and chives ($20), or for vegetarians the Herbed Goat Cheese, with arugula, wild mushroom, and a healthy glug of truffle oil ($18). Or, if you really want to get crazy and live on the edge (or maybe just have something super huge to celebrate?!) check out their Guinness World Record 24K Pizza. This $2,000 dish includes Stilton, foie gras, platinum Ossetra caviar, truffle, and 24K gold leaves. For an extra $700 you can add on 1.5 ounces of Almas Caviar. The pizza must be ordered 48 hours in advance, so plan ahead for this one!

Finally, for dessert there’ss two items that can’t be passed up: the Chocolate River, dark chocolate lava cake, coconut sorbet, berry coulis, and whipped cream ($14), or if you have people to share it with, go with the Industry Puff, which is puff pastry, burnt sugar ice cream, whipped cream, toasted almonds, melted dark chocolate ($20).

Industry Kitchen Salad

Good To Know

Along with being an awesome spot to eat any time of day (particularly the nice ones!) Industry Kitchen also hosts regular events. For Independence Day, for example, they had a special celebration featuring the Revolution Burger, which was 25lbs Kobe beef patty, 2lbs bacon, 2lbs American cheese, 1lb tomato/onion compote, and 1 head of lettuce on a 24” brioche bun ($150). What better (of yummier) way to celebrate the 4th than by digging into that deliciousness with your closest meat loving friends as fireworks grace the NYC skyline ?

Reservations can be made to Industry Kitchen via OpenTable. Glenwood residents living in the Barclay Tower, Tribeca Bridge Tower, and Liberty Plaza will enjoy the long summer days dining by the water in their neighborhood.

semilla-brooklyn-menu

One of the most exciting things for me about the New York City restaurant scene this past decade has been the emergence of semi-cheffy, startlingly tasty comfort food in low-priced restaurants. Burgers, pizza, tacos, mac-n-cheese, salads, fried chicken, ramen, grilled cheese, barbecue, dumplings, sandwiches, bagels… really every category of this sort of "basic food" has seen a host of first-rate places opening everywhere, a real boon to people like me who like to eat a lot of good food. That said, there are also those special occasions where a bit of a splurge is in order, and when I welcome the concurrent NYC restaurant trend of wildly inventive and insanely delicious multi-course tasting menus. For example: the vegetable-forward Semilla, a thoroughly remarkable place in Williamsburg that offers a fixed, ten (or so)-course menu every night for $75, and at which I had what will almost certainly be one of my favorite meals of the year.

semilla-brooklyn-radish

Dining at Semilla

I went to Semilla last Saturday night–you definitely need a reservation if you want to do the same–settling into my stool at the rectangular communal dining-bar with no idea what exactly what was in store, other than "mostly vegetables" and "place has great reviews". They don't post that night's menu at Semilla (though they do email it to you later), nor even tell what's coming, and since the night is grouped into two seatings, no one around you is ever too far ahead in the feast. Basically: you get at least ten wonderful surprises–it all looks beautiful, and tastes even better–during the 90 minutes or so it takes to enjoy your feast (lingerers and sobremesa fans can stretch that out if they choose). The format encourages conversation with your rotating team of servers, who are often also your chefs, describing the contents of the dish they just prepared for you in the kitchen.

semilla-brooklyn-carrots

Semilla's Season-Specific Menu

Your Semilla menu will be different than mine, depending on what's in season and such, but a few highlights of my overall spectacular dinner would include the single perfect Radish, citrus-salted greens intact, that arrived with a generous schmeer of seed-studded foie gras, for dipping; the stalk of Japanese Knotweed (it's kind of like celery) filled with a robust herb emulsion; the amazing Blue Barley and Flaxseed Sourdough bread with potent kelp butter; the intense (and visually stunning) Roasted Carrots, served with a smoked potato puree and a shot of pea shoot broth poured over at the last second; and for the first dessert (you get two) Egg-Yolk Saffron Sorbet on top of smoked cream and a layer of passion fruit. It was all excellent, and I'm sure whatever it is that they make you will be too. Oh and make sure you check out the bathroom "window."

Semilla is located at 160 Havemeyer Street between S 2nd and S 3rd Streets, and is open on Tuesdays through Saturdays from 6:00 until the last seating is finished. Closed Sundays and Mondays.

Super bowl snacks stacked up into the shape of a football stadium, using pretzels, dips, pretzels and more

The Super Bowl is less than a week away — Sunday, February 1, 2015 — and even though our local teams were pretty terrible this season, at least we can all eat and be merry, right? If the beer-wings-bar scene is not your thing, we've amassed a list of alternatives!

Although New York City will not have the excitement of hosting the Super Bowl as it did last year maybe we get a better game. If you have an apartment large enough to host your group of friends you're probably not looking to cook for a crowd. If you're looking to skip the craziness of NYC sports bars but are in search of a seat, a view, pitchers (or bottles) and a steady flow of food, we got you covered!

A stack of crispy BBQ ribs ordered for the Super Bowl in NYC

BBQ Food for Super Bowl 2015

Barbecue is a good idea any day as far as I'm concerned, but it also makes for an excellent game-day feast. Personal favorite Mighty Quinn's in the East Village has an awesome catering menu, as does the equally-great Hill Country in the Flatiron. Dinosaur Barbecue in Harlem will be serving up special Super Bowl ribs-and-wings platters, with all of their famous sides available in half-gallon buckets. Also superb barbeque food options are:

Parm's three-foot version of their House Roasted Turkey hero for the Super Bowl

Super Bowl Sandwich Spread

If a sandwich-based spread is more your thing for the Super Bowl, you should start your search at Parm in Nolita, which will be constructing a special three-foot version of their incomparable House Roasted Turkey hero as well as trays of Chicken and Meatball Parm, and Mario Carbone's Superbowl Lasagna. Speaking of meatballs, you can't go wrong with the crowd-pleasing catering menu from The Meatball Shop (personal note: don't shy away from their stealth-hit Chicken Balls with Mushroom Gravy). You may also want to check out Carmine's, whose signature big flavors and massive servings are perfectly suited for America's biggest party. For a classic NYC sandwich-and-sides experience, the 2nd Avenue Deli has a Super Bowl package as well.

Boneless chicken wings, bitten in half and dunking in a side of blue cheese

Watch Football and Enjoy Asian Cusine

Finally, for a feast of Asian-inflected snacks that go way beyond your Chinese-spot usual, check out David Chang's Momofuku Noodle Bar's "Super Bowl To Go" menu, featuring Korean style fried chicken wings, chilled spicy noodles, and roasted rice cakes. And if you've been invited to a party and put in charge of "bringing wings", my advice is to hit up Mudville 9 on Chambers Street for a hundred- or two-hundred pack of their slightly messy, slightly spicy beauties (comes with buckets of seasoned fries!), and you'll be a true Super Bowl hero.

So tell us: Where will you be watching the Super Bowl 2015 game? What's on your Super Bowl party menu?

A few nights ago the good folks at Food Republic invited us to their Summer Pie Party, held at Little Owl: the Venue in the West Village. It featured more amazing pie than anyone could possibly ever eat, all from some of the best bakers and chefs in the city. Plus: lots of fun, refreshing cocktails. Needless to say, we took Food Republic up on their offer, gorged ourselves silly, laughed and chatted with pie makers and our excellent Little Owl hosts, and walked away with five valuable lessons.

1. Pie Trumps Cake, Always and Forever

Sorry, cake bakers out there, but all else being equal, pie is not only more delicious than cake because of the crust, but because it's also so much more versatile and can done up sweet or savory. I mean, just look at the range of taste sensations we had to choose from at the party! There were:

 • Duck and Cherry Hand Pies from Geraldo Gonzalez of El Rey Coffee Bar
 • Buttermilk Chess Pie with Peaches and Cream from Husk Nashville's Lisa Donovan
 • Smoked Chicken and Onion Pie via Richard Kuo of Pearl & Ash
 • Amazing Birch Beer creation from the wizards at Four & Twenty Blackbirds, which in my opinion is still the best pure pie shop in the city.

Make a note for all those pie-required occasions coming up this holiday season.

2. Miss Lilly's 7A Cafe in the East Village is Worth the Trip

My favorite savory pie of the night–and the competition was fierce–came from Miss Lilly's Adam Schop, an insane Game Pie stuffed with all sorts of meat (pigeon, deer, grouse, pig) and served with a Caribbean Jerk Aspic, Mango Chutney, and Spicy Cucumbers. It was unbelievably good, this dish. Schop told me he's coming up with more and more crazy combos like this at Miss Lilly's 7A, including a Jerk Ramen special that I'll bet is worth the trip. Update: I went last night, had the ramen, it was awesome.

3. Babycakes Reigns Supreme in the Vegan Baking World

I'm neither vegan nor gluten-free, but because more and more NYC bakers are catering to those with dietary restrictions, I've had more than my fair share of such goodies over the last few years. And still, as far as I can find, no one has bested Erin McKenna's Babycakes, which has been delighting all comers since it opened on the Lower East Side in 2006 (also owner of Pip's Place on the Upper East Side). I just recently popped into McKenna's shop for a Samoa Doughnut, inspired by the Girl Scout cookie Samoa. One word: delicious. Her Summer Pie Party contribution, a decadent Peach and Cherry Cobbler with caramel and vanilla, was possibly the winner among all the sweets.

4. Jeni's Ice Cream is Worth $13 a Pint

The finest pies deserve the finest "a la mode", so Food Republic and Little Owl had plenty of Jeni's Splendid on hand. Based in Ohio and with a storefront Nashville, Jeni's has become increasingly available in NYC of late–all Whole Foods carry it, as well as most "specialty" food stores–and it truly is on-another-level heavenly. Start with the Salted Caramel (by far the best version of this now-ubiquitous flavor), but you really can't go wrong with anything Jeni makes. Like my scoop of Roasted Strawberry Buttermilk, for example, pictured below with the Buttermilk Chess Pie. Yes, Jeni's Splendid costs about double what even most premium brands and ice cream parlors in NYC are charging, but if you only indulge a couple of nights a week, it is so worth it.

5. Little Owl Has an Amazing Event Space

What a great event space! I don't have call to book party spaces that much (or, really, ever) in my life, but if I did, Little Owl: the Venue would be my go-to for small to mid-sized gatherings. Located on Greenwich Avenue in the West Village, the famous restaurant's "catering showroom" is smartly designed with a full open kitchen, a cozy bar, and enough room to seat as many as 40 guests up front, or accommodate 70 people mingling about. The food is guaranteed to be good if you use their in-house service (this IS a Joey Campanero joint, after all), but even if you bring in your chefs, you can count on the supremely friendly and professional staff to make sure everything runs smoothly.

The more outdoor activities the better is my motto for summer in the city. Yeah, sure, it can get hot and humid–though so far we’ve been pretty lucky–but do you remember that winter we just had? Enjoy it while you can! Roller coasters, the beachdancing, kayaking, get out there and experience this beautiful weather, New York!

These days, it seems that you can do anything outdoors if you wanted to, especially (a personal favorite) eating. From fancy picnics in the park to the explosion of sidewalk seating in recent years, al fresco dining has never been more popular in this town. And the best part of this trend? Food fairs and festivals, serving some of the best bites you’ll have all year, have become an entrenched part of the NYC dining scene. Here’s a look…

Happening All Summer Through The Fall

Although the informal outdoor gathering of neighborhood eats is an age-old NYC tradition–from the impromptu sidewalk barbecues of Inwood to the (pre-code) Red Hook Ball Field vendors–it was the Brooklyn Flea and its food-only spin-off Smorgasburg that were the pioneers of the current model: high-quality, freshly-made, locally-sourced food served at prices (and in sizes) that encourage you try several different booths each visit. Offering a sort of test kitchen to young, interesting chefs (many vendors here have gone on to open full-fledged restaurants) the Flea/Smorgasburg continues to draw monster crowds each weekend some six years after its founding, and has spawned a host of imitators, the best of which:

 • The LIC Flea and Food in Long Island City
 • The newly expanded Hester Street Fair on the Lower East Side
 • The great New Amsterdam Market, located just north of the South Street Seaport, will be open once a month through the fall as well.

Annual Food Festivals Not to be Missed!

Then there are the one-time-only food festivals that are well worth seeking out, most urgently THIS SUNDAY JULY 13, when the raucous and wonderful Bastille Day block parties take over East 60th Street in Manhattan and Smith Street in Brooklyn, where Bar Tabac and crew host an amazing petanque tournament. If you like eating a ton of food, day drinking, people watching, loud French music, and lots of silly FUN, this is the place to be.

Come September, watch out for:

Hudson Eats in Battery Park City; A Food Court Beyond Your Wildest Dreams https://www.glenwoodnyc.com/manhattan-living/hudson-eats-food-court/ Mon, 07 Jul 2014 12:45:19 +0000 http://glenwoodstage.wpengine.com/?p=9521 With 600 seats, 35,000 sq. feet, and a compilation of the best NYC restaurants, the massive Hudson Eats is raising the bar on what it means to be a Food Court!

From this picture of the interior of Hudson Eats you can see how large the space is and how high the ceilings are, creating a really open space.

After months of anticipation, by Battery Park City and FiDi locals, by the hordes of area office workers, and by pretty much everyone in NYC who likes really good food, the massive Hudson Eats "food court" officially opened to the public. Located on the second level of Brookfield Place, Hudson Eats brings an all-star roster of counter-service restaurateurs to an airy, bright, surprisingly sprawling space. If you spend any time here in Battery Park City, even if it's only to see a movie at the always-under-crowded Regal Stadium multiplex, Hudson Eats has increased your quick-bite dining options exponentially!

A Compilation of Our Favorite NYC Restaurants

Just take a look at the folks slinging their delicious goods here! At Hudson Eats, you'll find some of our favorite NYC restaurants, including:

 • Mighty Quinn's, which serves some of the best barbecue anywhere in NYC.
 • The spanking-new Black Seed, home of Montreal-style bagels (and topping options like beet-cured salmon), that is currently selling out on weekends by around 1:00, so get there early.
 • The cultishly-adored California import Umami Burger.
 • The great Dos Toros, which might make have the best Mission-style burrito in town.
 • The excellent Cambodian sandwiches from Num Pang.
 • Equally excellent grilled cheese sandwiches from Little Muenster.
 • An array of healthy, salad-y choices from the likes of Chop't, Dig Inn, Tartinery, and Skinny Pizza.
 • Cute-looking cupcakes from someplace called Sprinkles.

And all of these places are within steps of each other, which means that only hard part about eating here is choosing where, in fact, to actually eat.

Within the gigantic space that is the Hudson Eats food court, seating is plentiful, including this row packed with people by the window.

Puts the "Court" in Food Court

The physical space at Hudson Eats is impressive as well. With some 600 seats spread out over 35,000 square feet, the place is divided into a number of distinct dining areas, from comfy booths and banquettes to large communal tables to stool-and-counter spots for those on-the-go. There are even a few quiet nooks, no small feat in such an enormous, bustling space. Nice job all around, Hudson Eats. Oh, and among other big-news restaurants coming soon: Blue Ribbon Sushi, a tapas bar from Jose Garces called Amanda, and maybe most exciting, a new outpost of the Torrisi's awesome Parm.
