Enjoy Outdoor Dining

friends eating outdoors together

Brookfield Place shopping center is a staple in the Downtown scene. It’s home to luxury stores such as Gucci and Ferragamo, as well as a world class food hall and several onsite restaurants.

Work up an appetite shopping (or window shopping!), and then head to Beaubourg, located in the Le District Food Court. Beaubourg is a restaurant with a gorgeous outdoor terrace for dining, and an absolute dream for watching the sunset over the Hudson River. The food is described as “classic French, and new New York”, so you can go expecting plenty of outdoor dining delights such as shrimp cocktail, lobster, and oysters, as well as French staples such as cheese boards and steak frites.

Sail on the Hudson River

Located on the Hudson River right out back of Brookfield Place is North Cove Sailing. They are a sailing school, club, and community center, offering a variety of sailing experiences for the whole family. If it’s your first time, consider trying one of their free community sailing weekends to see how your sea legs are! If it’s a success, club membership is a gift you can treat yourself to that will keep on giving all spring, summer, and most of the fall long! Sailing season is from May through October, with daily hours from 9am to 8pm Monday through Saturday, and 9am to 6pm on Sunday.

Also, consider checking out our list of 5 places to sail off into the sunset in NYC, which will get you on a boat close to whichever Glenwood neighborhood you live in!

Ride a Sea-Themed Carousel

There are carousels in several NYC neighborhoods, but Downtown is home to the only sea themed one!

Located at the The Battery Conservancy, the sea glass carousel pays homage to the Battery’s history as the original location of the New York Aquarium. You’ll be jumping into tall, iridescent fish, complete with glowing lights, soothing classical music, and aquatic sound effects. It makes for quite the underwater experience! Rides are $5 each, fun for both kids and adults alike. The carousel is open daily from 10am to 10pm.

After riding the carousel, spend a few hours enjoying the surrounding park. The Battery is home to stunning harbor views, beautiful perennial gardens, bike paths, grand lawns, an off-leash dog area, and even an urban farm. Check out their event’s calendar which features outdoor downtown fun all season long, including free outdoor yoga.

Whether you love it, hate it, or use it as excuse to treat yourself to the finest chocolates and freshest flower bouquets, Cupid gave us the scoop on NYC's best options to celebrate this day of love - and yourself!

bouquet of flowers

Ahhh, February 14th, the most romantic day of the year in New York City! Whether you love it, hate it, or prefer to use it as excuse to treat yourself to flowers, chocolate, and other sweet gestures, we’ve teamed up with Cupid himself to showcase the best options to celebrate this day of love – and yourself! Here’s how to create the perfect Valentine’s Day in 5 easy steps:

1. Order Fresh Flowers

It’s Valentine’s Day… so send flowers to someone special in your life! Whether it be your beau, your mom, sister, aunt, best friend, or your grandmother, pick up a colorful bouquet that fits their personality.

If the receiver lives within Manhattan, stop at your local neighborhood bodega and create your own bundle of blooms, finished with a sweet Valentine’s note. If you’re sending an arrangement out of town, try the company BloomThat. Not only are they wrapped in the prettiest burlap and tied with color coordinating ribbons (completely ready to be Instagrammed), but the flowers stay fresh for SO long!

Bonus for New Yorkers: Enjoy same day delivery in NYC if you want to surprise someone in the office!

2. Buy Local Chocolate

Valentine’s Day is the sweetest day to celebrate your special someone with edible treats they’ll actually want. Afterall, we do live in a city filled with artisan chocolatiers!

Pick up some delectable chocolates from a local sweet shop or via online. Jacques Torres Chocolate, Ladurée, and Maison du Chocolate are three great chocolate stores in Manhattan worth checking out. If you are looking for chocolate strawberries, be sure to check out Agata and Valentina, which is located very close to Glenwood’s The Lucerne, The Pavilion and many other Upper East Side Glenwood buildings.

The Marlowe – Upscale East Side Apartments

The Marlowe is a great location for luxury living in the heart of the Upper East Side. With 4 unique units per floor, make your next home in one of these exclusive apartments with airy rooms and 9-foot ceilings. Book a tour today!

3. Plan a Special Date

February 14th does not mean you’re expected to make a fancy reservation and see a movie. Instead, break that mold! Avoid overpriced bistros, crowded bars, and overworked wait staff with a new kind of date that suits both you and your Valentine.

How does a swanky soiree at the American Museum of Natural History on the Upper West Side sound?  The night begins with an open bar of cocktails and champagne, passed hors d’oeuvres and chocolate, while a jazz quartet plays in the background. Snuggle close in the Hayden Planetarium while an astronomer tells sweet stories based on the cosmos. Will your stars align? This event is a short cab ride for residents of The Encore – so dress your best for a lovely night out close to home! Or a glass blowing class in Brooklyn?! Get creative the city has so many fun and cool experiences you can plan!

The word love spelt out on pink background

4. Send Snail-Mail Cards

When’s the last time you received a piece of mail that wasn’t junk or a bill? Receiving snail mail is one of life’s smallest but greatest pleasures, and this simple gesture can bring so much joy to your loved ones, both near and far. Whether your Glenwood building is in Midtown East or the East Side of Manhattan, head over to Greenwich Letterpress and stock up on cute cards and stationary (they have a fabulous Valentine’s Day selection!), pen a sweet note, and drop them in the nearest post box. You’ll be sure to bring a smile to a lot of faces!

Theres a great stationary store with fantastic cards located close the many of the Glenwood Upper East Side buildings- Paper Source on 1296 3rd Avenue!

5. Renew Your Vows or Be Inspired by Others Who Are

Two of the most romantic places you can spend your Valentine’s Day in Manhattan is Central Park and Times Square!

Every year, couples are encouraged to show up on the famed red steps of Times Square where they can renew their wedding vows in front of the world. This year, while all are clearly welcome, a special invitation has been extended to lovers who’s relationship bridge boundaries. Wedding attire is always encouraged, too!

For a more intimate atmosphere, Central Park is always our recommended go-to destination to enjoy some quality time with your beau. Take a walk around the reservoir, enjoy a cozy carriage ride, or snuggle up on a nearby bench. We bet you’ll find a few other couples doing the exact same!

Swoon over these ideas for Valentine’s Day? Share with us on Facebook and Twitter on how you shared love in the air!

Close up of bedroom with neutral tones Living in an apartment in NYC can often feel a bit tight, especially if you have recently moved from the suburbs or have a growing family! But, don’t worry! There are some easy, great tricks to help create a larger and more open feel to your apartment. Whether you live uptown or downtown, these tips can change the atmosphere of your entire apartment. Check out Glenwood’s tips on how to create the feel of a larger space below!

Hang Art Or Shelves High

Four pictures of leaves in black frame on wall
If you have art throughout your Glenwood apartment, the key is to try to draw your eye up vertically. So, try to hang art an inch or two higher than you normally would to create the illusion of taller walls. It is an easy trick to create the appearance of higher ceilings! This trick also works with shelves if you have floating shelves in your apartment, simply start them an inch or two higher than you normally would. This is an easy trick that anyone can do! Similarly, if you are hanging two pieces of art on top of each other, if one has lighter colors in it hang it above the darker colored piece of art. It will help to draw your eye up the wall instead of down.

Paint The Walls Light Colors

Neutral painted wall with plant in left corner
If you are trying to visually open up your apartment to create the illusion of more space, try painting your apartment walls a light color. Light paint colors like shades of white, cream, light grey, or light blue will all open up a space. Think about dens, often people paint them darker colors like navy or hunter green to make the space feel cozier, so if you want to open up a space, do the opposite! Additionally, keep the same color on the walls in the entrance and immediate spaces. So, if your entry flows into your living and dining area, try to keep the walls all one color. If you paint small, neighboring spaces two different colors, you visually chop up the areas instead of creating a visually flowing space. Be sure to check with your building’s management office before you paint the walls to check their policy! Glenwood apartment’s must be returned in the same condition as originally presented to a tenet.

Use Area Rugs

If your apartment has the living and dining area in the same, smaller space, there are ways to make the two areas feel more independent and large. Try an area rug! If you put an area rug in your living room area, under your couch and coffee table for example, you create a distinctive, separate space from your dining table that may be situated a few feet away. Area rugs are great for separating spaces in an apartment. If you live in a studio apartment, you should definitely make use out of this great trick! You can create a bedroom area too by putting an additional area rug under your bed if you do live in a studio apartment.

Use Furniture With Storage

A great trick to opening up a smaller apartment space is to use furniture with built in storage. This way, you don’t need extra dressers or things laying around to clutter your space. In your bedroom, try a bed frame with drawers built in! If you don’t love the look of shelves in the bed frame, you can choose a bed that has drawers on one side or that masks the appearance of the drawers altogether. Also in your bedroom, try to find nightstands with deeper, numerous drawers. In your living room, a coffee table with storage is great for throw blankets, magazines, and books! It can help declutter your space instantaneously! Small ottomans with storage are also great in the living room. Not only for storage purposes, but they don’t take up much space and can be used for guest seating or as your footrest depending on how many people you are having over.

Try To Use Mirrors

Mirror used in apartment living room that is half circle shaped, the design is modern earthy
Mirrors are a great way to create the illusion of a bigger space! Either hanging a mirror on a wall as décor or placing a large standing mirror in an entry or living room area can immediately open up an area. You can find so many different, great mirrors to match your design aesthetic online or in home good stores. The key is to place the mirror somewhere that you enjoy what it is reflecting. You don’t want to place a mirror somewhere that emphasizes the messy book shelves that you never sort through! So, just be mindful of what you want the mirror to reflect! Aerial view of lower Manhattan New York City

One of the most common questions someone has when moving to Manhattan for the first time is should I live uptown or downtown. The two neighborhoods definitely have their distinct differences, and depending upon what you are looking to get out of your NYC life, you will find either uptown or downtown living suits you better! We have come up with some important topics to consider when choosing to live uptown or downtown, whether that be restaurants, night life, museums or easy access out of NYC! Keep reading to hear our opinion!

Uptown Living

Uptown living (considered above 57th Street) is great for families or anyone who wants to experience NYC and all its delights in a slightly more quiet manner! Uptown has something for everyone, great shops, restaurants, and residential areas that are close to parks, museums and excellent private schools! Glenwood has 16 buildings in uptown Manhattan. If you are set on living uptown but can’t decide between the upper east side versus the upper west side, click here to read a blog post we wrote about the differences between the two neighborhoods! If you are interested in Glenwood’s uptown buildings click here for the east side and here for the west side.

Downtown Living

Living downtown (considered below 14th Street) is a very lively choice filled with different neighborhoods, each having their own distinct personalities! If you are looking for more of a neighborhood, tight community feel in the big city–downtown living might be for you! If you want the hustle and bustle of stores, restaurants, and nightlife soho is a great option! The west village is quaint with great neighborhood coffee shop and beautiful townhouses! If you want to live downtown in a neighborhood that is very family try Tribeca where you can live, work and play all in the same neighborhood! Glenwood has 3 buildings downtown. If you are interested in Glenwood downtown buildings click here!

Let’s Dive Into It:

Restaurants

gourmet chef preparing food in kitchen

Both uptown and downtown Manhattan have great food options!

If you want to try a restaurant that is a little more trendy with often a festive vibe, downtown spots may be more favorable to you! Downtown restaurants are always packed with foodies trying the new and best spots! A 9pm table is not considered a late table, and if you love being able to walk to great restaurants downtown may be more favorable to you! Don’t forget Little Italy and Chinatown are so close to all the downtown neighborhoods, which ads a really fun dining element if you are a foodie! Some great spots to try are Lure Fishbar (in soho), Bondst Sushi (in soho), Mamos (in soho), Bodega Negra (in chelsea) and Morimoto (in chelsea). These are all great spots for Glenwood downtown residents to try!

Don’t be fooled by the fact that you hear it is impossible to get a dinner reservation downtown, if you want a table at a popular restaurant uptown,  you need a reservation weeks in advance as well! Uptown dining has endless options as well with all different cuisine types too! If you are looking for a more classic restaurant with a little more of a docile atmosphere that is still lively, uptown restaurants may be up your alley! With great spots like Omars, Le Colonial, Bar Italia,  Avra, Kappa Masa  (all on the upper east side), RedFarm (on the west side), and Red Rooster (in harlem)  there are definitely diverse cuisine types with great ambiances that is just a little more relaxed than many downtown spots come the later hours! Glenwood uptown east side and west side residents should try these great spots!

The Seaport has several restaurants all walking distance of Glenwood’s Liberty Plaza!

DOWNTOWN

Night Life

If you ask a New Yorker where the best nightlife is in Manhattan, most will definitely tell you downtown! And, if you are looking to live close to very lively, trendy, hot spots that can be walking distance from each other, downtown living is definitely for you. Downtown is packed with options in all of its neighborhoods like soho, the meatpacking district, and china town! There are also great late night activities in downtown Manhattan  like The Magician at The Nomad Hotel or Sleep No More at The McKittrick Hotel.

If you want to live in a quieter area, but occasionally want to frequent great nightlife and don’t mind hopping on a subway or taking a 20minute cab ride to get there, then uptown living will suite you! Uptown has some great bars too like the Mark Hotel’s Bar, The Regency Bar, the bar at Avra Madison, the bar at Omars (all upper east side), or Vanguard Wine Bar (upper west side). These are more lounge type of casual vibes that are great if you just want to enjoy a drink out on the town.

Parks

Sunset at Battery Park in New York City

If parks are very important to you, this is a big consideration when deciding if you want to live uptown or downtown. Uptown has so many great parks like Central Park, Morning Side Park, Riverside Park, Carl Shurz Park, and Fort Tyron Park. These are larger, more traditional parks with more emphasis on the greenery! If you love taking a morning jog around the reservoir, uptown eastside and westside are perfect for you!

Downtown parks are often smaller with a bit more concrete, but  have a lot of lively entertainment like at Washington Square Park! If you like to stroll after dinner and find some nice entertainment–from the occasional live music to performances, downtown parks are for you! Don’t forget about the High Line! This 1.45 mile park runs on what were old railroad tracks on the lower west side through the Meat Packing District and Chelsea.

Battery Park and Rockefeller Park are just steps from Glenwood’s Tribeca Bridge Tower!

The Ease Of Leaving Manhattan

If you like to leave Manhattan either for some fun weekend exploration or for a work commute, it is important to choose where you live! If you love to go to Brooklyn and explore areas like Vinegar Hill or Dumbo, then living in Glenwood downtown buildings is much more convenient for you!

If you work or like to visit Long Island, Westchster or Connecticut on the weekends, living uptown will largely reduce the time spent in your car if you are driving!

It’s that time of summer to bring out your brightest red, white, and blue outfits and celebrate the United States! If there’s one summer time event that makes every New York City resident come together and appreciate not only our fantastic city, but our beautiful country, it’s the 4th of July! As one of our favorite traditions, the Macy’s 4th of July firework extravaganza is the perfect match when celebrating the 4th in NYC. Grab your picnic blanket, friends and family, and some and favorite BBQ snacks as we experience every “ooh” and “ahh” that comes along with the best fireworks shows in New York City!

The fun all happens this year at Macy’s Firework Extravaganza, happening Monday, July 4th along the East River, which runs between Manhattan and Brooklyn.

The fireworks will be set off from barges set up on the river between 24th and 41st Streets. The show is set to start around 9:25 pm, and lasts for about 30 minutes. If you’re lucky enough to have an apartment (or a friend!) with a rooftop space close to the show (Midtown East, we’re looking at you!), bring along a festive dessert and gather there!

Catch The Fireworks At The 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge Rooftop

The 1 Hotel in Brooklyn Bridge has a prime viewing spot to watch the firework show this 4th of July! The 1’s rooftop lounge has a great vibe that will complement anyone looking to have a special 4th! Located in Dumbo at 60 Furman Street, this is easiest to get to for Glenwood downtown residents.

Set Up a Picnic for the Show at East River Esplanade

If the idea of packing a frisbee, a picnic basket, and some boxed vino appeals to you, we suggest heading to the Upper East Side to the beautiful 7 acre long East River Esplanade. You’ll have an excellent view of the Manhattan skyline, which gives the absolutely perfect backdrop to watch and snap some pictures of the fireworks show. Best of all? It’s completely free!

Watch The Fireworks at The Roof At Park South

Even if you don’t have access to a private rooftop with views of the show, you can head to Midtown to the Roof At Park South, and enjoy both the fireworks and a fabulous dinner! Treat yourself to an amazing dinner from Chef Tim & Nancy Cushman at Covina at 7pm followed by viewing from The Park South Hotel.
