vase of pink flowers in an apartment

Spring might have officially begun on March 20th, but the weather certainly isn’t reflecting the season yet. However, this gives you more time to give your apartment a fresh Spring look. Even if it’s not sunny and warm yet, buy some colorful flowers and begin with the floral displays! Many of you might not have an eye for flower arranging, leading to wonky and lopsided bouquets. Hence, we’re here to the rescue! Learn these instructions for obtaining the most beautiful flower arrangements, and leave your guests in awe.

woman cutting flower stems

1- Cut the Stems

First and foremost, immerse your flowers’ stems in water, and cut the base at a 45 degree angle. This results in the flowers drawing water easily from the vase, also known as ‘faster capillary action’. Alyssa Ponticello, Brooklyn-based founder of Runway Chef, suggests gently smashing the ends of woodier stems with a hammer for good measure.

2- Remove the Leaves

If there are any leaves that fall below the waterline in your vase, cut them off. Also, make sure your flowers aren’t cluttered by excessive leaves at the top, as the end goal is to have an elegant design.

3- Add in Odd Numbers

Time to assemble your arrangement and utilize some creative techniques! According to Refinery 29, owner of Fox Fodder Farm Taylor Patterson recommends adding the flowers in odd numbers, and maintaining a loose grip around the stems so they spread out. She also mentions that tiny pods and mint leaves allow for an element of surprise, as well as some breathing room for the flowers. After all, crammed flowers results in a messy arrangement.

Why odd-numbered groupings? The answer is easy: The rule of threes states that items arranged in odd numbers are more attractive, unforgettable, and effective. Three is apparently the magic number, but 5, 7, or 9 work beautifully too. This guideline appears in many other fields besides interior design, such as graphic design, photography, storytelling, etc. Research shows that 3 is the smallest number that can be used to form a distinguishable pattern in our minds. Moreover, our eyes move around more when we see an odd-numbered display, causing a more fascinating visual experience.

4- Secure your Arrangement

Once you’ve grouped the matching flowers, wrap the stems using a rubber band, floral tape, or even a ribbon to keep your assortment in place. Be careful not to wrap it too tight, or your flowers might shift and appear wobbly. A smart move would be using a clear elastic that won’t show after the flowers are inside the vase. If you’re presenting the bouquet to someone, wrap the ribbon into a bow to achieve a simple, neat look.

5- Create a Unique Vase

Not finding an acceptable arrangement? No problem, you can come up with several sophisticated vase hacks. One idea would be to place each flower in its own water bottle/cup and then group the vases together on your living room table. Therefore, each flower will stand out and you’ll have the effect of a floral arrangement.

A variation on this idea would be tying the bottles together with a twine and adding some wildflowers. This option has a wild feel to it, but it’s suitable for an apartment with a casual design.

To get a mystical appeal, create a flower arrangement in a jar and fill the bottom with 1-2 inches of water. For aesthetic purposes, only group flowers of the same species together. Continue doing this until you have a wide arrangement.

6- Keep the Flowers Fresh

We all fear our flowers will wilt quickly a few days after buying them. For this reason, store the vase in the fridge overnight and we guarantee the flowers will remain fresh and vibrant longer than you expect. Based on Apartment Therapy’s experiment, this was the winning technique to keep the flowers blooming. Test it out for yourself!

Seems like it actually might be warm now for the duration (though let's not forget the April blizzard of '82!). Spring ushers in lots of activites in New York, such as the flower shows we wrote about recently. But it's also time to clean your home. Ugh, I know, but remember: there are few chores that feel more satisfying when you're done than a big (or even semi-big!) spring cleaning. Now, I am no expert on the subject as my kids will tell you, but we scoured the internet and found a number of sites with some stellar-sounding advice.

Hand holding a lint roller and clearning a white lamp shade

Scrub Two Things and Call Me in the Morning

For example, Ashley Brown, normally at Seventh House on The Left, guest-posted 10 Spring Cleaning Tips and Tricks on Home Depot's reliably-handy Apron blog. Using a lint roller to clean fabric lamp shades is an immediate keeper, and I kind of like the idea of spending 10 minutes at the end of every day (Brown sets a timer) to tidy up or scrub down something that will have a real impact on the way your home feels in the morning. The organization fanatics at A Bowl Full of Lemons always have good ideas on how to manage your clutter, but it was their recent post on cleaning your fridge that finally inspired me to do mine, and it makes me happy every time I open it (which is a lot).

Top to Bottom Spring Cleaning Lists

No surprise, our friends at Apartment Therapy have several evergreen posts on the subject, including this gem from last year, a floor-to-ceiling roundup packed with proven strategies on cleaning everything from shower curtains and medicine cabinets to your computer keyboard and garbage cans, as well as a list of 25 places to donate unwanted clothes. The Huffington Post has a good list of off-beat organizers for every room; How Stuff Works put up one of their typically comprehensive guides, which is especially inspiring for their prep tips;

What to Use: Green Cleaning Products

Long gone (I hope) are the days where a good bleach solution to clean most anything is the preferred method. Today, environmentally concious home dwellers are opting for "green" cleaning products that get the job done while having no impact on the environment. The folks at the Well+Good NYC blog suggest that with a little smart shopping, a dash of awareness, and some time to create home-made solutions, you can clean green with these non-toxic cleaners! Treehugger also recenty posted their take on green cleaning, an idea which seems to be is catching!

If spring ever actually arrives here in New York City–snow on April 1?, is this a PRANK, Mr. Climate!?–we're ready with our supplies to do some spring cleaning! AND, in keeping with the season's spirit of renewal, we always like to bring a little something new to our home every spring. It doesn't have to be anything big; over the years we've discovered that, with the right addition, it doesn't take much to change the way a room feels. With that in mind, here are ten room changers we've noticed or been reminded of around the internet way these past few weeks, all priced between "very affordable" "sort of affordable", any one of which would go a long way toward giving a bright, fresh start to some of the more tired corners of our home.

A red poster wotj a white grahic leans up again and old black radiator in an apartment

1. We love all of the prints by the folks at Odd Hero, especially their punctuation mark posters, and the typography ones. In fact, it's super tempting to order, say, three of them–we're leaning toward the ampersand, the asterix, and the question mark–and hanging these room changers all in a row…

Dominoes artwork on the wall - numbers 12, 5 and 9 make great room changers in the sparse space

2. Hanging a new clock on your wall is also a great quick room changing sprucer-upper. This domino clock by Carbon Design–it's 12:59 in the picture, by the way–is a definite conversation starter. Plus, fun game at parties: see how long it takes for people to notice it's a working clock!

A red graphic flower design wall clock - this room changer becomes a work of art on a white wall

3. Benza makes lots of fun, unique room changer products for the home, from vases to tableware to lamps and trashcans. But it's the contemporary, energetic Benza wall clocks that have us hooked on this company… that and their nice, reasonable prices.

An old fashioned trunk at the edge of a bed with white and orange patterned comforter holds books and is a great room changer

4. If you have something a bit more vintage-y in mind, we spotted this clever DIY project on Design Sponge, in which you turn a lovely old suitcase into a classy, low table (with storage!).

Room changing sheets spruce up this bed with orange, pink, blue and green boxes outlined with white

5. Giving your bedroom a new look is easy with room changers: a new duvet cover, new shams (or pillow cases), done. There are tons of great designs out there, obviously, but our favorites tend to come from the geniuses at Dwell Design, or, pictured, Area Home. Or: Marimekko, now at the Crate and Barrel on Houston and Broadway. Or, heck, even IKEA usually has lots of good designs.

A young girl sits on a pink and orange flowered bean chair

6. Speaking of, this chunky Marimekko Fatboy–in either regular or "junior" size–is an excellent-looking reboot of the classic beanbag chair. We've heard mixed reports as to their functionality (cozy and comfy! too slippy to sit!), but there's no question that these are instant bedroom room changing brighteners.

Funky stools in white with colorful trim cut up the center - very elegant room changers for any apartment

7. We fell instantly in love with these lovely white porcelain containers from Kahler, brilliantly brightened by the addition of a simple, colored rubber band. We want to get three or four, in different sizes, and line them up in our bathroom.

A unique coat rack features a red ball in the center with sticks of wood at the top and bottom for a delicate balanced room changer

8. Here's another terrific, minimalist design deftly brightened by a burst of color. Really, the only downside to Tamawa's coat rack is that we wouldn't want to cover it up with coats! (Hat rack, maybe?)

A mock-up of a see through glass toaster over with a piece of bread toasted perfectly

9. And then there's the transparent toaster from Design-Milk, which would not only look amazingly cool in our kitchen, but would also ensure that we got our bagels exactly right every time. Only problem? They can't get the glass hot enough, so this room changing product doesn't exist. Yet.

Colorful stools contrast complimentary colors and stack for convenience

10. Finally, we've been fans of the Australian outfit Luxxbox for a while now (their Stak bookshelf look great, IS perfect, for small rooms), but it's these terrific little mix-n-match Tingle stools, boldly colored "like a fizzing lolly", that currently have our attention.

Let us know what other, really want it badly, room changer finds you have your eyes on.
