The High Line, which is known to New Yorker’s as NYC’s most unique elevated park, is one of the most popular outdoor attractions during summer in the Big Apple. Glenwood residents living on the Westside and Downtown have the added benefit of being extremely close to the outdoor action. We’re super excited for the below fun and free events coming to The High Line this summer!

people enjoying the highline

For Family Fun

Parents with kids in NYC sure know the importance of a good outdoor festival. It’s a way to get the kiddos into the sunshine and fresh air (and away from electronic devices!), it’s allowing everyone to appreciate this beautiful city they call home, it’s entertaining for all members of the family, and extra bonus points when it’s free…leaving more money for a nice dinner afterwards! The High Line is hosting several family festivals this summer, the first being “Go! It’s A Family Festival” on Saturday, June 30th from 10am to 1pm, at the High Line between 15th and 16th Streets.

The festival celebrates all the different cultures, dreams, and stories we have in the different neighborhoods and boroughs of NYC. Diversity at its finest! Through storytimes, dance parties, movement workshops, art creation, super heros, and plants, kids and their caregivers can plan for a day in the sun full of fun! The program is held rain or shine, so mark your calendars!

Explore Downtown Manhattan

As every New Yorker will say, everything awaits Downtown - including your next luxury apartment from Glenwood.

For Great Music

If you love music and dance, join the High Line on Thursday, July 5th from 6pm to 9pm for “Arriba: Latin Dance Party With Sonido Costeno”. It will be held on the High Line at 16th Street, and you can enjoy an open dance floor, with a killer sunset, and then an open “rooftop” under the stars! A DJ will kick off the festivities, and then NYC’s hottest Latin bands will do live performances, bringing the best of the salsa world straight to the heart of NYC.

For Meditation

Self-care seems to be the buzzword of 2018, and you can’t get more into caring for yourself than with a guided hour of meditation! Every other Tuesday, June through September, join the High Line at 22nd Street from 8am until 9am for a guided meditation from the pros at Integral Yoga Institute and Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Center. You’ll start your day off feeling more focused, centered, and ready to tackle whatever NYC throws at you.

For Tours

Tours in NYC are most certainly not just for tourists, why should they get to have all the educational insights and fun?! The High Line is offering a tour called “High Line Tour: From Freight To Flowers” Tuesdays from 6:30pm to 7:45pm as well as Saturdays from 10am until 11:15am. You’ll meet at the High Line at Gansevoort St, and learn all about the park’s history, design, and landscape from a professional docent. Tours will be happening through September.

Luxury Living at Tribeca Bridge Tower

Schedule a tour today of Tribeca Bridge Tower's luxury Downtown Manhattan apartments.

You can RSVP for all of these events online ahead of time on the High Line’s website. Residents at Tribeca Bridge Tower and Emerald Green will love their close proximity to all these fun summer events.

Flowers on the Highline

A few tips before you head out:

Being an elevated park, the sun shines down fiercely! Even on days that may look overcast and cloudy, do your future-self a favor and lather on the sunscreen, and bring hats and water bottles for everyone in your party. Nothing takes the fun out of an evening of salsa dancing or morning meditation quite like waking up the next morning with a killer sunburn!

If you are heading to the High Line with a stroller or wheelchair, check out their accessibility points ahead of time online to save yourself headaches once you get there. Not every street has elevator access, so you’ll want to plan ahead and go directly to the closest one to your event that does.

While it’s a park, the High Line is NOT pet friendly. If you show up with your pooch (no matter how adorable and small he may be), you will most likely be asked to leave by park security. Leave Fido at home this time, and save Central Park trips for him!

What are you most looking forward to on the Highline this summer? We’d love to hear on Facebook and Twitter!

Four elegantly prepared razor clams at Charlie Bird SOHO

Charlie Bird, the wildly successful Itailan-ish spot that somehow comfortably crams a city’s worth of scenesters every night into its awkward narrow space, was at or near the top of just about every “best new restaurant” list last year. People love the casual atmosphere, the wine list, and the food. Anchoring the western end of what is possibly today’s most exciting restaurant “neighborhood,” the Houston Street corridor, Charlie Bird and NYC are having an intense love affair at the moment. But for various reasons (it’s a tough table, it’s a little pricey), I hadn’t been to Charlie Bird until finally getting the opportunity just last week… and man am I glad I took it.

Friendly Service and Boom Box Prints Create Atmosphere

Even at 6pm on a Tuesday, the place was hopping, buzzing with an impeccably dressed, expensively accessorized crowd. The music is great–mostly old school hip hop, with a couple of wild cards thrown in. The service is impressively warm and friendly. The room fells much more spacious than it reall is, with a short bar and some tables on the lower level, and the main dining area taking up all of the upper tier, which is dominated by large prints of boom boxes. You can see why people want to linger here long after the feasting is done.

Freshly made spaghetti pasta in green with sauce at Charlie Bird SOHO

Charlie Bird’s Lives Up to the Hype

And feasting is most certainly appropriate at Charlie Bird. I tried more than a half dozen dishes on this night and there wasn’t a clunker among them. The Razor Clams with fennel and chilis lived up to the hype, a terrific briny/spicy/salty/licorice-y/slippery/crunchy mash up. The Farro Salad is a must-order as well, the chewy grains paired with pumpkin, pistachio, mint, and parmigiano, and the Blood Orange and Radicchio Salad is pretty first-rate, too.

close up of roasted chicken pieces at Charlie Bird in NYC

A Feast Worthy of a Crowd, Which You Can Expect

I’ve heard that all of the Charlie Bird pastas are excellent, but I can only vouch for the Spaghettini Nero, with its hefty chunks of crab, fiery chilis, and deeply inky noodles. By the time we got to our entree–the famous Roasted Chicken stacked atop an intense “crispy bits salad” and a scoop of amazing chicken liver; plus a side of crunchy roasted Brussels Sprouts–we were already full, but that didn’t stop us from polishing it all off anyway, Nor did it prevent us from ordering dessert, which was an excellent Coconut Panna Cotta. Charlie Bird feels like a special occasion sort of place to me, or, say, a fourth-date spot. Though we were seated immediately as 5:30pm walk-ins, don’t expect to get a non-reserved table much later than that. But if you enjoy this sort of scene from time to time (and it can be energizing), this is the place.

Charlie Bird Location and Hours

Charlie Bird is located at Sixth Avenue and King Street, just south of Houston, and is open every day at 5:30 for dinner (until 11:00 Sunday through Thursday; until 12:00 Friday and Saturday) and for lunch/brunch on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Crowds visiting New Amsterdam Market next to Fulton Fish Market in Manhattan.

The New Amsterdam Market, located right by the old Fulton Fish Market in the South Street Seaport area, reopened last Sunday for the season, which is good news indeed for all New Yorkers, but especially for downtown Glenwood residents (in both the Barclay Tower and Tribeca Bridge Tower), and especially ESPECIALLY for Glenwoodians fortunate enough to live in the luxury rentals of LIberty Plaza, just a few blocks away. The New Amsterdam Market is one of our favorite such markets in all of New York City, because it combines the on-site fun and feasting of a good snacking/dining destination (think: Smorgasburg) with the take-home, locally grown or produced pleasures of a solid farmer's market.

Pie Corps selling Fire Cider at NYC's New Amsterdam Market.

The vendors at the New Amsterdam Market vary slightly from week to week (though many of the best will be there for duration), but on opening day we particularly enjoyed such old favorites like the Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Caramels at Liddabit Sweets; the smoky, chewy Classic Jerky at King's County Jerky; the creamy frozen treats at La Newyorkina (on this day: a scoop of spectacular Arroz con Leche ice cream); and the juicy, crackling piggy sandwiches at Porchetta. Also of note: Pie Corps is back with their awesome savory delights; the Moroccan "sandcastle" cookies at Black and Blanco are unique and, if you opt for the Marzipan variety, totally delicious; the Fire Cider will, no question, wake you up in a hurry (ask for a sample); and the Queens County Farm has a booth this year, and though they were "only" selling lovely flowers and herbs on Sunday, their fruits and veggies are always among the best at the Union Square Market, so this is an excellent addition for downtown residents.

Downtown NYC Food Artists? Not Quite But New Amsterdam Market Entertains Every Week!

Want another reason to visit the New Amsterdam Market? Every week they host some sort of special, thematically-organized mini-festival, with a pop-up "pavilion" of purveyors as well as as workshops and demonstrations. Last Sunday, for example, the New Amsterdam Market featured all things made from grain, with 16 of city's top bread-bakers selling their wares and a pizza-making exhibition, complete with wood-burning oven, by Jim Lahey and his superb Co. pizzaiolo Matt Aita. And this week's special sounds possibly even better: a celebration of "International Meats" from the likes of Solber Pupusas and Guadelupes Tamales. See you on line.

The New Amsterdam Market is located on South Street between Beekman Street and Peck Slip and is open every Sunday between now and late fall from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. For more details and a list of vendors on any particular week, please see the New Amsterdam Market website, here.

E.V. Day and Kembra Pfahler's Giverny exhibit at The Hole in Manhattan.

Fifteen, twenty years ago, if someone asked you to go downtown to the Bowery to see an exhibition at a place called The Hole, you would be forgiven if the invitation gave you pause. Today, of course, things are different–WAY different–on NYC's one-time Skid Row, as time has given way to luxury highrise manhattan apartment and condo developments, high-end clothing stores, scads of excellent restaurants, and a burgeoning lower Manhattan art gallery scene…including the aforementioned Hole. But even though the Bowery neighborhood has gotten a lot less wild, The Hole doesn't do bland art. Witness E.V. Day and Kembra Pfahler's jaw-dropping collaboration, Giverny, Monet's garden and muse.

E.V. Day and Kembra Pfahler's collaboration, Giverny, Monet's garden at The Hole.

Photography Like Classic Claude Monet Paintings With a Twist: Kembra Pfahler

The story is this: in 2010 artist/designer E.V. Day was awarded the opportunity to live at Giverny, the famous estate of Claude Monet's garden, which the great impressionist used as his muse for many of his most iconic paintings. Not surprisingly, Day was also inspired by Giverny's grounds, and so enlisted Kembra Pfahler to don her signature performance garb–bright body paint, bondage-y boots, crazy black wig–and come pose for photographs in the Monet's garden at its August peak. And THEN, best of all for downtown NYC gallery-goers in the Barclay & Tribeca Bridge Towers, the Hole convinced Playboy to foot the bill! They recreated the Monet garden Giverny within their Bowery space, the better to show off E.V. Day's photographs, complete with live flowers, gravel pathways, and signature green bowed bridge.

E.V. Day's photograph from Claude Monet's garden exhibited at the Hole in Manhattan.

The result of all E.V. Day, Kembra Pfahler, and The Hole's efforts is a true art-show spectacle, and certainly the most fecund lower Manhattan exhibition we've seen…well, maybe ever. As sensational as the paintings by Monet, the photographs themselves are terrific, with Kembra Pfahler looking like some sort of insane neon-pink flower amid the botanical explosion of Monet's garden. But it's the transformation of space itself that really makes this an exhibition worth going out of your way for (or combine it with a visit to the New Museum, or a movie at the Sunshine, or a meal at any number of the first-rate restaurants within a few blocks of the Hole). Adding to the other-worldliness of the show: E.V. Day commissioned an artist to stand at-easel during Giverny's run, and paint the lush landscape. Great fun, all of it.

Experience "Giverny" by E.V. Day & Kembra Pfahler The Hole

E.V. Day and Kembra Pfahler's Giverny will be at the Hole through April 24. The Hole is located on Bowery between Houston and Bleecker Streets, and is open Tuesday through Saturaday from 12:00 noon until 7:00 p.m. For more information, please see the Hole's website, here.

A nice counterpoint to the upcoming, always-heavily-hyped Biennial at the Whitney Museum, the much-appreciated if too-often-underwhelming New Museum on Bowery just unveiled The Ungovernables, a triennial survey of the state of global contemporary art, opening up all of its gallery space to some 34 artists, artist groups, and temporary collectives (for a total of more than 50 individual participants), all of whom were born between the mid-1970s and the mid-1980s, and many of whom have never before exhibited in this country. In other words: they're young, their life experience is likely different than yours, and you've probably never seen, or even heard of, any of their works before in New York City art museums. Most important, after an afternoon spent wandering all of the New Museum's five exhibition floors, we're pleased to report that there are many more hits than misses at the New Museum Triennial this time out.

2012 Triennial Exhibition is Bringing Young Artists to Lower Manhattan

The central theme of The Ungovernables: 2012 New Museum Triennial couldn't be more timely: a look at how this generation of 25- to 35-year-old artists are reacting to and helping shape our current climate of civil disobedience, protest, revolt, anger, and demands for self-determination, as well as a concurrent, nagging sense of impermanence and uncertainty about the future. We like many of the pieces here, but clearly the show-stopper at the New Museum Triennial is Adrián Villar Roja's mammoth sculptural work, "A Person Loved Me", which looks to be not only some sort of fearsome, futuristic military machine, but also, with its cracking facade and cumbersome stature, like a relic of some increasingly irrelevant past, a once-mighty giant on the verge of collapse. Great stuff.

And there are many more interesting, amusing, provocative, weird pieces here as well. Other highlights at The Ungovernables: 2012 New Museum Triennial include Cinthia Marcelle and Tiago Mata Machado's wild video "O Século", in which unseen "combatants" hurl and smash all manner of debris–fluorescent light tubes, chunks of brick and concrete, wooden bowls, chairs–from the left side of the screen to the right, and then the image reverses itself, so the right now attacks the left; Pratchaya Phinthong's pile of clearly-worthless paper money, called "What I learned I no longer know; the little I know, I guessed", and which features stacks of 50 TRILLION Zimbabwe-dollar notes; Pilvi Takala's pranksterish "The Trainee", documenting via video and paperwork, the month she spent deliberately, blatantly NOT working at the accounting giant Deloitte (one whole day, for example, was spent riding the elevator); and Abigail DeVille's appropriately forbidding "Dark Day" which makes the best use we've ever seen of that tiny "gallery" half-way down the New Museum's grand stairway. There's a lot more, too. It's been a long time since, given the New Museum's $14 admission fee AND relatively (as compared to, say, the MoMA) small space, that we've felt comfortable giving our friends an unqualified "go" to an exhibition there, but The Ungovernables earns just that.

Entry of La Churreria Spanish eatery on Mulberry Street in Manhattan's Soho and Nolita.

Part bakery, part hot-chocolate bar (there’s coffee, too), part sandwich spot, and all with the distinct flavor of Spanish cuisine, the new La Churreria on Mulberry Street does a great job of offering weary Soho and Nolita shoppers and on-the-go quick-bite seekers cozy relief on a dreary February day. Opened in December by Jesus Manso, aka Lolo, of next-door Socarrat renown (by the way, one of our favorite meals and nicest nights of 2011 was spent at the bar here, falling in love with a platter of paella), La Churreria has a pedigree that should at least get you in the door. And though La Churreria may specialize (and, mostly, excel) in frying up its namesake doughy, chewy, cinnamon-y sticks, there are also enough other things on the menu here, both sweet and savory, to earn it a permanent spot among our top picks for snacks and treats.

We stopped in to La Churreria on one of the coldest, rawest afternoons of this so-far mostly fake NYC winter, and had a very pleasant hour or so chatting and sipping and snacking. The space at La Curreria is tiny–just a few elevated tables, a few stools before a narrow counter on which to perch your food and drink–but we’re guessing that a good deal of the business comes from on-the-go “breakfast rolls” (the Huevos Con Chorizo sounds especially appealing) and take-out lunch baguette-built Bocatas, or, to the laymen, sandwiches. If you do stay, the La Churreria staff is friendly and flirty (not inappropriately), the seats comfy, the neighborhood ideal for people-watching.

Anyway: the food. We were hungry, so split one of La Churreria’s “Pierna De Cerdo En Adobo Pan Blanco” sandwiches, which featured mounds of juicy shredded pork, caramelized onions, melty manchego, and was salty, spicy, and completely satisfying. And, of course, we had an order of Churros, a six pack which, while fine texture-wise, definitely needed the thick cup of, in our case, Double Dark dipping chocolate (you can also get hazelnut or “spicy aztec” flavors) to achieve the proper sugar intake level such a snack requires. And so, properly fueled, we left La Churreria re-energized and ready to take on the rest of our day.

La Churreria is located on Mulberry Street just south of Houston Street, and right next door to Lolo’s Soccarat paella restaurant (the original Soccarat, in Chelsea, is smaller than the one here but, we hear, just as good). La Churreria is open on Sunday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., and on Friday and Saturday until 11:30. For a look at the complete La Churreria menu, please see the restaurant’s MenuPages page, here.
