Enjoy Outdoor Dining

friends eating outdoors together

Brookfield Place shopping center is a staple in the Downtown scene. It’s home to luxury stores such as Gucci and Ferragamo, as well as a world class food hall and several onsite restaurants.

Work up an appetite shopping (or window shopping!), and then head to Beaubourg, located in the Le District Food Court. Beaubourg is a restaurant with a gorgeous outdoor terrace for dining, and an absolute dream for watching the sunset over the Hudson River. The food is described as “classic French, and new New York”, so you can go expecting plenty of outdoor dining delights such as shrimp cocktail, lobster, and oysters, as well as French staples such as cheese boards and steak frites.

Sail on the Hudson River

Located on the Hudson River right out back of Brookfield Place is North Cove Sailing. They are a sailing school, club, and community center, offering a variety of sailing experiences for the whole family. If it’s your first time, consider trying one of their free community sailing weekends to see how your sea legs are! If it’s a success, club membership is a gift you can treat yourself to that will keep on giving all spring, summer, and most of the fall long! Sailing season is from May through October, with daily hours from 9am to 8pm Monday through Saturday, and 9am to 6pm on Sunday.

Also, consider checking out our list of 5 places to sail off into the sunset in NYC, which will get you on a boat close to whichever Glenwood neighborhood you live in!

Ride a Sea-Themed Carousel

There are carousels in several NYC neighborhoods, but Downtown is home to the only sea themed one!

Located at the The Battery Conservancy, the sea glass carousel pays homage to the Battery’s history as the original location of the New York Aquarium. You’ll be jumping into tall, iridescent fish, complete with glowing lights, soothing classical music, and aquatic sound effects. It makes for quite the underwater experience! Rides are $5 each, fun for both kids and adults alike. The carousel is open daily from 10am to 10pm.

After riding the carousel, spend a few hours enjoying the surrounding park. The Battery is home to stunning harbor views, beautiful perennial gardens, bike paths, grand lawns, an off-leash dog area, and even an urban farm. Check out their event’s calendar which features outdoor downtown fun all season long, including free outdoor yoga.

Stuffed butternut squash with chickpeas, cranberries, quinoa cooked in nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon. Thanksgiving dinner recipe. Vegan healthy seasonal fall or autumn food

If you have wanted to experiment with healthy side dishes to balance out your Thanksgiving meal, this is a great year to get started! Since this year calls for Thanksgiving to be celebrated with just those in your immediate household, you don’t have to worry about everyone in your extended family’s meal preferences. We have found some great recipes for you to try to make in your Glenwood kitchen! Keep reading to find out more.

Vegan Creamed Spinach

A small casserole dish of spinach in cream sauce with fall table decor like leaves and pinecones

Creamed spinach is one of my most favorite fall and winter side dishes! But, I know it is far from healthy, so this year I have found a great recipe from Bon Appétit that is vegan and I won’t feel as guilty going for that second serving! This recipe will serve approx. 4 people.

Ingredients:

  • 11 4oz packages silken tofu, drained
  • ¼ cup grapeseed, vegetable, or other neutral oil
  • 8 scallions, thinly sliced
  • 13″ piece ginger, peeled, finely grated
  • 1 chile (such as serrano or Fresno), thinly sliced
  • 5 garlic cloves, thinly sliced
  • 4 bunches mature spinach (about 2 lb.), trimmed, torn into large pieces, pinch of Kosher salt

Directions:

Step 1:

Purée tofu in a blender until smooth and the consistency of heavy cream. Transfer to a small bowl.

Step 2:

Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium. Cook scallions, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 3 minutes. Add ginger, chile, and garlic and cook, stirring occasionally, until garlic is softened and mixture is fragrant, about 2 minutes. Working in batches, add handfuls of spinach, letting it wilt slightly before adding more and stirring occasionally, until all the spinach is in the pan. Cover and cook until spinach is wilted and bright green, about 3 minutes. Uncover and reduce heat to medium-low. Stir in tofu mixture and cook until warmed through, about 2 minutes. Taste and season with salt.

Quinoa Salad With Sweet Potato and Kale

A beautiful, richly colored salad that has a fall flavor spectrum is a perfect side dish for your Thanksgiving meal. This recipe from Cookie and Kate is as delicious as it is healthy.

Ingredients:
  • 2 medium sweet potatoes (about ¾ pound total), peeled and diced into ½-inch pieces
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Salt and pepper
  • 1 cup quinoa, rinsed
  • 1 ¾ cups vegetable broth
  • 2 cups stemmed and finely chopped curly kale
  • ½ cup roasted, salted sunflower seeds*
  • ⅓ cup thinly sliced fresh basil
Pesto dressing (yields about 1 ½ cups, so you’ll have extra leftover)
  • ½ cup firmly packed fresh basil leaves
  • ¼ cup firmly packed fresh parsley leaves
  • ½ cup olive oil
  • ¼ cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 clove garlic, roughly chopped
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup or agave nectar
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • Pepper, to taste
Directions:
  1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a large, rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup.
  2. To prepare the sweet potatoes, transfer them to the prepared baking sheet and toss them with 2 tablespoons olive oil. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and arrange in a single layer. Bake for 10 minutes, then toss and bake for 10 to 15 minutes longer, until tender and browning. Set the pan aside to cool.
  3. Meanwhile, combine the rinsed quinoa and broth in a medium saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, then decrease the heat to maintain a simmer, cover, and cook until the quinoa has absorbed all the liquid, about 20 minutes. Fluff the quinoa with a fork and set aside to cool.
  4. To make the vinaigrette, combine all of the ingredients in a blender or food processor and process until mostly smooth, but with small pieces of herbs still visible.
  5. Transfer the chopped kale to a large serving bowl. Sprinkle with a dash of salt and then use your hands to “massage” the kale, grabbing big handfuls at a time and gently squeezing them in your fist until the kale is darker in color and more fragrant, about 15 seconds.
  6. Add the sweet potatoes, quinoa, kale, sunflower seeds and sliced basil to the bowl. Drizzle with about ⅓ cup dressing and gently toss until all of the ingredients are evenly coated. Taste and mix in more dressing if desired.
  7. Serve the salad at room temperature or cold. Leftovers will keep well in the refrigerator, covered, for up to 2 days.

I made this dish and loved it! I added some pomegranate and chickpeas because my husband loves them and served it inside a roasted squash!

Stuffed eggs with egg yolk, bacon, mustard and dill, close up view on a white dish

Devilish Eggs

Deviled eggs are a great appetizer to put out for your family while you finish preparing your Thanksgiving meal! This deviled egg recipe by Ellie Krieger found on the Food Network has the same great flavor, but is in fact healthier!

Ingredients:

  • 1 dozen eggs
  • 2/3 cup silken tofu, drained
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon hot sauce, plus more to taste
  • 2 teaspoons prepared horseradish
  • 2 tablespoons chopped chives
  • Salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika

Directions:

  1. Place the eggs in a large saucepan and cover with water. Place over high heat and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 9 minutes. Remove the eggs from water and run under cold water for about 1 minute or until cool enough to touch. Peel eggs under cold running water.
  2. Slice the eggs in half lengthwise. Scoop out the yolks and discard 6 of them or save for another use. Set aside the whites.
  3. Place the remaining yolks in a medium bowl and mash with the tofu, mayonnaise, mustard, hot sauce, horseradish and chives. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Spoon the mixture into the corner of a plastic bag and snip off the end. Pipe the yolk mixture into the egg whites. Arrange on a platter and sprinkle with paprika.
Beet salad with spinach and minced apple. Isolated on a white background.

Beet And Apple Salad

This recipe from Food & Wine by George Mendes blends fall flavor and color into a light, healthy salad perfect for your Thanksgiving table!

Ingredients
  • 4 large beets (2 1/2 pounds)
  • 5 thyme sprigs
  • ½ cup extra-virgin olive oil (plus more for drizzling)
  • Salt and freshly ground pepper
  • ¼ cup apple-cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 3 tablespoons prepared horseradish
  • ⅓ cup salted pistachios (chopped)
  • 1 green apple (thinly sliced)
Directions

Step 1:

Preheat the oven to 375°. In a baking dish, lightly drizzle the beets and thyme with olive oil. Season with salt and pepper. Cover with foil and roast until the beets are tender, about 1 hour and 45 minutes. Let cool, then peel the beets and cut them into 3/4-inch dice.

Step 2:

In a large bowl, whisk the vinegar with the mustard. Whisk in the remaining 1/2 cup of oil until emulsified. Add the horseradish and season with salt and pepper; toss with the beets and pistachios. Transfer the beets to a platter, top with the apple and serve.

Aerial view of lower Manhattan New York City

One of the most common questions someone has when moving to Manhattan for the first time is should I live uptown or downtown. The two neighborhoods definitely have their distinct differences, and depending upon what you are looking to get out of your NYC life, you will find either uptown or downtown living suits you better! We have come up with some important topics to consider when choosing to live uptown or downtown, whether that be restaurants, night life, museums or easy access out of NYC! Keep reading to hear our opinion!

Uptown Living

Uptown living (considered above 57th Street) is great for families or anyone who wants to experience NYC and all its delights in a slightly more quiet manner! Uptown has something for everyone, great shops, restaurants, and residential areas that are close to parks, museums and excellent private schools! Glenwood has 16 buildings in uptown Manhattan. If you are set on living uptown but can’t decide between the upper east side versus the upper west side, click here to read a blog post we wrote about the differences between the two neighborhoods! If you are interested in Glenwood’s uptown buildings click here for the east side and here for the west side.

Downtown Living

Living downtown (considered below 14th Street) is a very lively choice filled with different neighborhoods, each having their own distinct personalities! If you are looking for more of a neighborhood, tight community feel in the big city–downtown living might be for you! If you want the hustle and bustle of stores, restaurants, and nightlife soho is a great option! The west village is quaint with great neighborhood coffee shop and beautiful townhouses! If you want to live downtown in a neighborhood that is very family try Tribeca where you can live, work and play all in the same neighborhood! Glenwood has 3 buildings downtown. If you are interested in Glenwood downtown buildings click here!

Let’s Dive Into It:

Restaurants

gourmet chef preparing food in kitchen

Both uptown and downtown Manhattan have great food options!

If you want to try a restaurant that is a little more trendy with often a festive vibe, downtown spots may be more favorable to you! Downtown restaurants are always packed with foodies trying the new and best spots! A 9pm table is not considered a late table, and if you love being able to walk to great restaurants downtown may be more favorable to you! Don’t forget Little Italy and Chinatown are so close to all the downtown neighborhoods, which ads a really fun dining element if you are a foodie! Some great spots to try are Lure Fishbar (in soho), Bondst Sushi (in soho), Mamos (in soho), Bodega Negra (in chelsea) and Morimoto (in chelsea). These are all great spots for Glenwood downtown residents to try!

Don’t be fooled by the fact that you hear it is impossible to get a dinner reservation downtown, if you want a table at a popular restaurant uptown,  you need a reservation weeks in advance as well! Uptown dining has endless options as well with all different cuisine types too! If you are looking for a more classic restaurant with a little more of a docile atmosphere that is still lively, uptown restaurants may be up your alley! With great spots like Omars, Le Colonial, Bar Italia,  Avra, Kappa Masa  (all on the upper east side), RedFarm (on the west side), and Red Rooster (in harlem)  there are definitely diverse cuisine types with great ambiances that is just a little more relaxed than many downtown spots come the later hours! Glenwood uptown east side and west side residents should try these great spots!

The Seaport has several restaurants all walking distance of Glenwood’s Liberty Plaza!

Which Neighborhood Would You Live In?

Looking for endless dining options, high end shops, and parks that are within walking distance?

UPTOWN

Looking for an energetic atmosphere with historic landmarks and riverside views?

DOWNTOWN

Night Life

If you ask a New Yorker where the best nightlife is in Manhattan, most will definitely tell you downtown! And, if you are looking to live close to very lively, trendy, hot spots that can be walking distance from each other, downtown living is definitely for you. Downtown is packed with options in all of its neighborhoods like soho, the meatpacking district, and china town! There are also great late night activities in downtown Manhattan  like The Magician at The Nomad Hotel or Sleep No More at The McKittrick Hotel.

If you want to live in a quieter area, but occasionally want to frequent great nightlife and don’t mind hopping on a subway or taking a 20minute cab ride to get there, then uptown living will suite you! Uptown has some great bars too like the Mark Hotel’s Bar, The Regency Bar, the bar at Avra Madison, the bar at Omars (all upper east side), or Vanguard Wine Bar (upper west side). These are more lounge type of casual vibes that are great if you just want to enjoy a drink out on the town.

Parks

Sunset at Battery Park in New York City

If parks are very important to you, this is a big consideration when deciding if you want to live uptown or downtown. Uptown has so many great parks like Central Park, Morning Side Park, Riverside Park, Carl Shurz Park, and Fort Tyron Park. These are larger, more traditional parks with more emphasis on the greenery! If you love taking a morning jog around the reservoir, uptown eastside and westside are perfect for you!

Downtown parks are often smaller with a bit more concrete, but  have a lot of lively entertainment like at Washington Square Park! If you like to stroll after dinner and find some nice entertainment–from the occasional live music to performances, downtown parks are for you! Don’t forget about the High Line! This 1.45 mile park runs on what were old railroad tracks on the lower west side through the Meat Packing District and Chelsea.

Battery Park and Rockefeller Park are just steps from Glenwood’s Tribeca Bridge Tower!

Museums

T-Rex dinosaur at Natural History Museum in NYC

Tips For Moving On Short Notice https://www.glenwoodnyc.com/manhattan-living/tips-for-moving-on-short-notice/ Tue, 11 Jul 2023 10:00:00 +0000 http://glenwoodstage.wpengine.com/?p=19691 Moving can be difficult, especially when the decision to pack up comes on short notice. Use these tips to make your move a breeze, even if you don't have a lot of time to spare!

Pile of moving boxes and household stuff in living room

Sometimes circumstances necessitate a fast move that can take you out of your comfort zone. There are a number of things you can do to prepare for a quick getaway. It’s a good time to pare down, and get items out of your life that you no longer need to carry from place to place. Just because time is of the essence, does not mean that the move has to be done in a haphazard way. Everything should be well labeled so that you have a system in place to ensure the packing and unpacking goes relatively easily. Professional help can be lined up, and there are always those friends that you can count on. Below, we’ve rounded up our top tips for moving on short notice.

Step #1: Make Reservations

Man holding clipboard on blurred boxes background

Assuming you have the move-in date set for your new place, don’t waste a second making reservations for your move. Whether this comes in the form of hiring movers to do the whole thing, renting a U-Haul to do it yourself, or calling in a favor from a friend with a truck, figure out which method best suits your life circumstances and secure the date now. Especially during the summer, you’ll have a lot of people who are also in the same camp as you, and the last thing you want to find out if you wait until the last minute is that there’ss no availability. This will only leave you scrambling for another option, but also paying much higher than you would have earlier in the process. (However, don’t let that summer is a busy time deter you from moving. Here’s 5 reasons to move during the summer!)

Step #2: Write A List Of The Major Things To Keep, Sell, Or Donate

Person sorting through boxes, keep, donate, discard

Obviously, you’re in a time crunch here so we’re not talking about going through your closet item by item and holding them up to see what sparks joy. Instead, we’re talking more big-ticket items, such as furniture, rugs, and appliances. Ask yourself questions such as:

–Am I downsizing of upsizing?

–Will the California King bed fit into my new bedroom?

–Does my new apartment come fully furnished with all major appliances, or will I be expected to get my own (such is the case sometimes for apartments in smaller buildings with washer/dryer hookups.)

Next, make a list of all the big pieces that make the cut, as well as ones that you will have no need for in your next home. For example, if you’re moving into a NYC apartment with less living room space than your current home in the suburbs, there’ss a good chance the wrap-around sofa sectional won’t be the best use of space. Figure out if you want to donate it to a charity that accepts used furniture (such as the Salvation Army or Housing Works), or if it’s in good enough condition to take the time to photograph it, post it on a site such as Craigslist or LetGo, and coordinate details to sell it.

Woman taping up moving box

Step #3: Stock Up With Packing Gear

Now that you have all the details of the move squared away and are left with only the items which will come with you on your move, it’s time to load up on packing gear. Boxes can be gathered from local stores for free, such as your local wine shop, but again, if you’re in a real rush the most time effective thing to do is to use a store such as The Container Store to secure all your boxes, bubble wrap, containers, tape, and markers. You can purchase the items right from their website and have them deliver it straight to your NYC home for same day delivery, how easy is that?! Glenwood residents can all benefit from this, whether you’re moving from The Bristol in Midtown East or The Encore on the Westside.

Step #4: Pack With A Method

Finally, the day has come to pack! Here’s a little tip though: it takes just as much time to pack in a messy rush as it does an organized one. So, rather than throwing items haphazardly into boxes, take the time to put a method into place. Packing room by room and clearly labeling each box is one easy way to do this. Trust us, your future self will thank you once you get into your new home!

Step #5: Organize A Cleaning Service

Assuming you don’t have the time (or energy, at this point) to spend a solid half a day cleaning your apartment once all the boxes are gone, consider hiring a maid service to come in to do the dirty work for you. While hiring a cleaning service does cost money, it’s absolutely worth shelling out a little in order to get your security deposit back on your apartment! And while you’re at it, it could be totally worth having a cleaning service do a move-in scrub for your new home, too. Starting out on a clean slate after a stressful move is worth its weight in gold.

An easy way to track how much extra exercise you’re actually getting is to utilize a pedometer. You can get an old school one that clips on your belt, or step things up and use any form of FitBit, iWatch, or even an app straight from your smartphone.

And don’t forget to load your phone up with favorite playlists and podcasts, or set a reminder to call a friend or long distance family member during these walks. It’ll make the time go by in a breeze, plus you’ll feel extra productive!

Some great walking paths are:

  1. Hudson River Greenway Path

Utilize Your Apartment

One of the simplest ways to sneak in some extra exercise that also takes the least amount of time is to exercise in the comfort of your very own home. If you’re watching your current go-to show, make a point to do crunches, jumping jacks, or hold a plank during all the commercial breaks. Or, if you want to multitask working out with cleaning, set a timer for 15 minutes and run around the apartment with a giant basket, returning everything that’s out of place to its proper spot. Another easy idea? Put on your favorite upbeat music and have a dance party with your partner or kids! None of these things require any extra equipment, but all are guaranteed to break a sweat!

If you are looking for exercise classes online, there are a ton to choose from. Currently, some very popular at home classes are: Tracey Anderson, Melissa Wood Health, and Chloe Ting.

Van Gogh

For anyone who needs a quick history on Van Gogh himself, he was a Dutch post-impressionist painter who lived from 1853-1890 whose work encompasses landscapes, still lives, portraits and self portraits. His unique brushwork can be stated to have aided in the building blocks of modern art. Having dealt with mental instabilities, he was denoted a “madman” during his lifetime and his works were not yet appreciated. He took his life at age 37. He began to gain fame in the early 20th century and his works are now among the most expensive paintings to be sold.

Why wait for the new year to make a resolution? If you start now, you will have made some good habits before the end of 2020! Here are some ideas to pick up on this winter season, such as drinking more water, taking time out of every day for self-care, and increasing your daily step count with a walk in nature.

Water being poured into a glass

Drink More Water

Especially with being smack in the middle of holiday season, drinking more water will help you to see huge benefits in your daily life. Did you know that often times when we think we’re hungry, we’re really thirsty? Try drinking a glass of room temperature water before every meal and snack, and it will not only keep you super hydrated, but it will also help cut back on unneeded calories. You can easily keep up with this habit from the comfort of your Glenwood apartment, as most buildings have filtered water throughout. Bonus points for squeezing fresh lemon into your water!

Tips For Making This A Habit: To make drinking water part of your daily routine, invest in a water bottle you love and carry it with you at all times. If you’re into tech, download the app My Water, which will help you track your daily intake of water. That way, if it’s 3pm and you’re only to 18% of your daily goal, you will be getting reminders to chug, chug, chug!

Self-Care

Diffusers and essential oils on a table with floweres

Self-care is actually a habit that should be easy for you to incorporate, because it’s all about loving on yourself! On airplanes, they always make the announcement at the beginning of a flight to put on your air mask before assisting others, and that’s pretty much what self-care is. It’s all about taking care of yourself first, so that you will be able to take care of your family, job, friends, and all the other tasks that make up everyday life. Many things can fall under the umbrella of self-care, but some examples are massages, pedicures, or your favorite restorative yoga class.

Tips For Making This A Habit: Pinpoint the self-care rituals that most excite you. If you really anticipate the ritual (i.e. your Monday night meditation class), you will be more likely to stick to it, even when the rest of life gets really busy.

Reading is one of the best habits for intellectual development you can pick up (and no, it doesn’t matter what you’re reading as long as you’re doing it!) However, as we get older it seems harder to find the time to read. Consider having certain portions of your day only to be used for reading. These can be your subway commute, the hour before bedtime, or when you’re waiting to go into appointments or meetings.

Eat More Fresh Food

While “eating healthy” can feel like a daunting task this time of year, “eating more fresh food” actually feels quite doable! Instead of telling yourself you can’t indulge in the cheeseball and pumpkin pie, simply tell yourself that you have to first eat your day’s worth of fresh vegetables and fruit, and then it’s fair game.

Tips For Making This A Habit: Jump start your day with fresh fruit. It can be eaten whole, sauteed, thrown into a smoothie, baked into muffins, or tossed on top of your oatmeal, yogurt, or cereal. Then you’ve already mastered this habit before leaving your Glenwood apartment!

Walk More

If you’ve ever wondered why New Yorkers are in better shape than people in other parts of the country (no judgement!), it’s because we have to walk so much more, and can’t rely on cars to get us everywhere! By increasing our daily step count, it’s automatic exercise.

Tips For Making This A Habit: Give yourself a personal daily step goal, and aim to meet it every day by tracking it on your smartphone or with your smart jewelry/watch. If you reach your goal daily for 30 days, reward yourself with a treat!

Get Out In Nature

Whether you live Downtown, on the Westside, or on the Upper East Side, you have a beautiful park at your fingertips! Take advantage of the greenery and make a point to get into nature several times a week. This will help alleviate stress and anxiety, plus it is great for your physical body as you breathe in fresh air.

Tips For Making This A Habit: While you are increasing your step count (see above), choose to take some of those steps through a park. You’re killing two birds with one stone!

Keep Clutter At Bay

There’s something to be said for a clear space equaling a clear mind, right? Likewise, a cluttered space tends to make us feel more on edge. Whether you’re choosing to keep on top of the clutter so that you can find things easier or so your Grand Tier home looks spick and span for last minute holiday visitors, taking care of clutter immediately helps in more ways than one.

Tips For Making This A Habit: Simply live by the motto that “everything has a place”, and put things back in their place as soon as you are done using them. Realistically, it takes the same amount of time to hang a jacket in the hall closet as it does to drape it on the back of your dining room chair.

Winter is coming, are you ready? Today we will cover tips for preparing your apartment for winter, such as ways to make the apartment feel cozy and warm, as well as preparing indoor activities for the inevitable NYC snow day.

Cozy throw blanket, tea and book open on a couch

Bring Out The Throw Blankets!

It’s the perfect time to transition your Glenwood apartment decor, getting it cozy for the upcoming months of chilly weather. A simple way to do this is to bring your throw blankets out of storage, and drape them over your sofa and beds for a layer of extra snuggles. Whether you’re staying in for the night watching Netflix or huddling under the covers in bed with a good book, you’ll appreciate the warmth!

If you don’t have throw blankets in storage from last season, head to your local Pottery Barn or West Elm to pick up some seasonal ones. They have locations located on the Westside, quite near The Encore and Hawthorn Park.

Add Seasonal Scents

Fall and winter scents like cinnamon, and clove spread out on a table

There’s nothing quite like walking into an apartment that smells like baked apple pie or warm pumpkin bread. While having these items baking in the oven 24/7 is not an actual reality, you can certainly incorporate essential oils and melting wax diffusers to create the essence all season long! Head to your local fragrance store, such as Diptyque on the Upper East Side, and pick up a few of their seasonal scents. Placed strategically around your apartment, such as the kitchen, living room, bedroom, and guest bathroom, your home will be smelling like a winter sanctuary in no time.

Prepare Indoor Games

Board games spread out on a table

Indoor games are just as important for the wintertime whether you have kiddos or are in a house of adults. When the nights get dark at 5pm and the weather is snowy out, it’s nice to be prepared with inside activities.

For homes with children, consider putting together an arts and craft kit. Depending on the ages of your kids, these can include things such as play dough, finger paint, sand art, coloring books, and jewelry making supplies.

And for homes with adults, load up on timeless board games! Cult favorites include Monopoly, Scrabble, Life, Uno, and of course a deck of cards. These games are good for most all ages (sans the extremely little tots), which make them perfect for the whole family to get in on. And don’t discount the pleasure a puzzle can bring, too…having it sit out on the coffee table to be worked on little by little throughout the season is a great way to pass the time.

Load Up On Warming Foods And Snacks

The last thing you want to have to think about during a snowstorm is running to the grocery store. Prepare ahead and load up on cozy wintertime goodies, such as hot chocolate and marshmallows, ingredients for a homemade soup or stew, and buttery popcorn pouches for popping during Christmas movie marathons. For those of you who live at The Pavilion, the food shop located in-house at the shopping arcade means you don’t even have to leave the building to stock up!

Pick Up Seasonal and New Release Books

A stack of books opened on a blue background

You can call your local bookstore and purchase a book for curbside order and pick up a huge stack of books with seasonal themes of the holidays or wintertime in general. These are great to keep in your children’s rooms to read before bedtime, and to really incorporate the season into their lives.

Also, check out the New York Times review on new release books that interest you and pick those books up for yourself! You won’t be without a book on hand all season long, which makes those cold Saturday afternoons pleasurable. Cuddling up with your throw blanket, hot cocoa, pumpkin spice candle, and book as you watch the snow fall outside your window. Wintertime perfection!
