Stuffed butternut squash with chickpeas, cranberries, quinoa cooked in nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon. Thanksgiving dinner recipe. Vegan healthy seasonal fall or autumn food

If you have wanted to experiment with healthy side dishes to balance out your Thanksgiving meal, this is a great year to get started! Since this year calls for Thanksgiving to be celebrated with just those in your immediate household, you don’t have to worry about everyone in your extended family’s meal preferences. We have found some great recipes for you to try to make in your Glenwood kitchen! Keep reading to find out more.

Vegan Creamed Spinach

A small casserole dish of spinach in cream sauce with fall table decor like leaves and pinecones

Creamed spinach is one of my most favorite fall and winter side dishes! But, I know it is far from healthy, so this year I have found a great recipe from Bon Appétit that is vegan and I won’t feel as guilty going for that second serving! This recipe will serve approx. 4 people.

Ingredients:

 • 11 4oz packages silken tofu, drained
 • ¼ cup grapeseed, vegetable, or other neutral oil
 • 8 scallions, thinly sliced
 • 13″ piece ginger, peeled, finely grated
 • 1 chile (such as serrano or Fresno), thinly sliced
 • 5 garlic cloves, thinly sliced
 • 4 bunches mature spinach (about 2 lb.), trimmed, torn into large pieces, pinch of Kosher salt

Directions:

Step 1:

Purée tofu in a blender until smooth and the consistency of heavy cream. Transfer to a small bowl.

Step 2:

Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium. Cook scallions, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 3 minutes. Add ginger, chile, and garlic and cook, stirring occasionally, until garlic is softened and mixture is fragrant, about 2 minutes. Working in batches, add handfuls of spinach, letting it wilt slightly before adding more and stirring occasionally, until all the spinach is in the pan. Cover and cook until spinach is wilted and bright green, about 3 minutes. Uncover and reduce heat to medium-low. Stir in tofu mixture and cook until warmed through, about 2 minutes. Taste and season with salt.

Quinoa Salad With Sweet Potato and Kale

A beautiful, richly colored salad that has a fall flavor spectrum is a perfect side dish for your Thanksgiving meal. This recipe from Cookie and Kate is as delicious as it is healthy.

Ingredients:
 • 2 medium sweet potatoes (about ¾ pound total), peeled and diced into ½-inch pieces
 • 2 tablespoons olive oil
 • Salt and pepper
 • 1 cup quinoa, rinsed
 • 1 ¾ cups vegetable broth
 • 2 cups stemmed and finely chopped curly kale
 • ½ cup roasted, salted sunflower seeds*
 • ⅓ cup thinly sliced fresh basil
Pesto dressing (yields about 1 ½ cups, so you’ll have extra leftover)
 • ½ cup firmly packed fresh basil leaves
 • ¼ cup firmly packed fresh parsley leaves
 • ½ cup olive oil
 • ¼ cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
 • 1 clove garlic, roughly chopped
 • 1 teaspoon maple syrup or agave nectar
 • ¼ teaspoon salt
 • Pepper, to taste
Directions:
 1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a large, rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup.
 2. To prepare the sweet potatoes, transfer them to the prepared baking sheet and toss them with 2 tablespoons olive oil. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and arrange in a single layer. Bake for 10 minutes, then toss and bake for 10 to 15 minutes longer, until tender and browning. Set the pan aside to cool.
 3. Meanwhile, combine the rinsed quinoa and broth in a medium saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, then decrease the heat to maintain a simmer, cover, and cook until the quinoa has absorbed all the liquid, about 20 minutes. Fluff the quinoa with a fork and set aside to cool.
 4. To make the vinaigrette, combine all of the ingredients in a blender or food processor and process until mostly smooth, but with small pieces of herbs still visible.
 5. Transfer the chopped kale to a large serving bowl. Sprinkle with a dash of salt and then use your hands to “massage” the kale, grabbing big handfuls at a time and gently squeezing them in your fist until the kale is darker in color and more fragrant, about 15 seconds.
 6. Add the sweet potatoes, quinoa, kale, sunflower seeds and sliced basil to the bowl. Drizzle with about ⅓ cup dressing and gently toss until all of the ingredients are evenly coated. Taste and mix in more dressing if desired.
 7. Serve the salad at room temperature or cold. Leftovers will keep well in the refrigerator, covered, for up to 2 days.

I made this dish and loved it! I added some pomegranate and chickpeas because my husband loves them and served it inside a roasted squash!

Stuffed eggs with egg yolk, bacon, mustard and dill, close up view on a white dish

Devilish Eggs

Deviled eggs are a great appetizer to put out for your family while you finish preparing your Thanksgiving meal! This deviled egg recipe by Ellie Krieger found on the Food Network has the same great flavor, but is in fact healthier!

Ingredients:

 • 1 dozen eggs
 • 2/3 cup silken tofu, drained
 • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise
 • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
 • 1/2 teaspoon hot sauce, plus more to taste
 • 2 teaspoons prepared horseradish
 • 2 tablespoons chopped chives
 • Salt
 • Freshly ground black pepper
 • 1/4 teaspoon paprika

Directions:

 1. Place the eggs in a large saucepan and cover with water. Place over high heat and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 9 minutes. Remove the eggs from water and run under cold water for about 1 minute or until cool enough to touch. Peel eggs under cold running water.
 2. Slice the eggs in half lengthwise. Scoop out the yolks and discard 6 of them or save for another use. Set aside the whites.
 3. Place the remaining yolks in a medium bowl and mash with the tofu, mayonnaise, mustard, hot sauce, horseradish and chives. Season with salt and pepper.
 4. Spoon the mixture into the corner of a plastic bag and snip off the end. Pipe the yolk mixture into the egg whites. Arrange on a platter and sprinkle with paprika.
Beet salad with spinach and minced apple. Isolated on a white background.

Beet And Apple Salad

This recipe from Food & Wine by George Mendes blends fall flavor and color into a light, healthy salad perfect for your Thanksgiving table!

Ingredients
 • 4 large beets (2 1/2 pounds)
 • 5 thyme sprigs
 • ½ cup extra-virgin olive oil (plus more for drizzling)
 • Salt and freshly ground pepper
 • ¼ cup apple-cider vinegar
 • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
 • 3 tablespoons prepared horseradish
 • ⅓ cup salted pistachios (chopped)
 • 1 green apple (thinly sliced)
Directions

Step 1:

Preheat the oven to 375°. In a baking dish, lightly drizzle the beets and thyme with olive oil. Season with salt and pepper. Cover with foil and roast until the beets are tender, about 1 hour and 45 minutes. Let cool, then peel the beets and cut them into 3/4-inch dice.

Step 2:

In a large bowl, whisk the vinegar with the mustard. Whisk in the remaining 1/2 cup of oil until emulsified. Add the horseradish and season with salt and pepper; toss with the beets and pistachios. Transfer the beets to a platter, top with the apple and serve.

laying seeds and small plants in a soil pot

Today we’re taking you on a beginner’s guide to growing your own produce from the comfort of an apartment, which is a perfect activity for the entire family right now. From buying the right supplies to knowing what kind of plants will successfully bloom indoors, this post will act as a resource for those interested in growing their own produce and herbs. Below, we’ll walk you through the basics of starting your own veggie garden right from your apartment.

Where Do I Grow My Garden?

First things first, where do you grow a vegetable garden if you don’t have a backyard? You have a few options here.

–Your Balcony. Many Glenwood buildings come equipped with your own personal outdoor space, such as the Upper East Side’s The Fairmont. If you have a balcony, this is a great option to host your garden.

However, even if you have no outdoor space, Glenwood buildings are known for their light drenched apartments. Just take a look at this sun-filled Glenwood apartment! With plenty of sunlight, you can hunker down near any window in your home and create a mini-garden. A few places you can take advantage of with the sunlight are:

–Your Walls. Think vertically! The great thing about a vertical vegetable garden is that they don’t take up much space, and are like an art installation to look at!

Your Windowsills. Whether in the kitchen or living room, take advantage of growing shallow rooted herbs and vegetables in containers that sit on your windowsill.

All three of these ideas are ideal for rental apartments, because they don’t require any permanent installations.

What Supplies Do I Need To Get Started?

To get started with an indoor garden, let’s get you rounded up with the essentials. To create a container garden (ideal for balconies, vertical gardens, or windowsill gardens), you will need the following:

 • Potting Soil
 • Compost or Fertilizer
 • Plants or Seeds
 • Pots
 • Watering Can
 • Soil Thermometer
 • Neem Oil
 • Hand Tools

You can visit your local home goods store, such as Midtown East’s or the Westside’s Home Depot (or order from the store’s website), where they can set you up with all of the basics in just minutes. Or, you can even do a quick online search on sites like Amazon for a starter kit to be mailed directly to your house–this is an easy way to jump right in, get your feet wet, and gain confidence as your green thumb grows!

A red tomato is grown on a windowsill as a house plant. Vegetable garden on the balcony.

What Should I Grow?

Deciding what to grow is a personal decision, based on several factors. First, you need to ask yourself what you use and enjoy eating the most. Even if you have a prime growing spot for a tomato plant but you hate tomatoes, it’s not going to do you much good now, is it? Choose to plant something that you will actually incorporate into your meals.

Another question to consider is what season you are planning to grow in? Certain vegetables and herbs will only grow in certain temperatures (this is important if you are putting your veggie garden on a balcony). However, there are some vegetables that can grow year round, even in the winter months indoors. They are: carrots, beets, onions, garlic, herbs, tomatoes, lettuce, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, and potatoes. Consider starting your garden with one or a few of these.

Finally, consider what makes the most financial sense. Obviously, an indoor garden won’t give you the same bounty as a full scale backyard garden, so take this into consideration. Maybe it makes more sense to purchase your produce from the Farmer’s Market and to grow all your herbs, since you typically only need a sprig or two per dish.

Other Options

If you are a bit worried that you don’t have a green thumb – there are very simple options that just require you to add water and a few “food” drops occasionally. Check out AeroGardens- all you have to do is order the indoor garden that provides its own light system and select your seed pods. If you want to grow tomatoes, lettuce or peppers, they have them all!

NYC Luxury Living in Midtown East

With easy access to every corner of the city that never sleeps, and all the bright lights, culture and mystique that make Manhattan famous, Midtown East is the ideal location for families and high-powered professionals alike.

This classic, diverse New York City neighborhood is home to notable landmarks like the Chrysler Building and United Nations headquarters, transportation hub Grand Central Terminal and world-famous high-end shopping at Saks Fifth Avenue and the flagship Tiffany’s store. Centrally located, it also borders Bryant Park and Rockefeller Center.

While most famous for its shopping and dining, Midtown East is a sophisticated, global community, home to most of the embassies, consulates and missions in New York City, along with luxury high rises on quiet, tree-lined cross streets in Sutton Place and Turtle Bay.

Midtown East NYC’s Main Attractions

Hudson Yards

Hudson Yards is home to 14 acres of public plazas, gardens, groves and outdoor art installations, more than 100 diverse shops and culinary experiences, the first Equinox Hotel, and modern office space and residences, as well as cultural

Shopping in Midtown East

When it comes to world-class shopping, few places on earth rival Midtown East Manhattan, most well-known for Madison and Fifth Avenues, where you can find the flagship stores of Chanel, Giorgio Armani, Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue, Tiffany & Co., and so many other iconic brands.

Eating in Midtown East

If Midtown East isn’t the shopping capital of the world, it’s certainly home to some of New York City’s best restaurants, including nearly all of the most highly rated steakhouses like Bobby Van’s, Sparks Steakhouse, Wolfgang’s Steakhouse, Ben & Jack’s Steakhouse, Morton’s The Steakhouse, The Capital Grille, Smith & Wollensky, and The Grill in the Seagram building. Or, if you’re in the mood for burgers, Burger Joint at Le Parker Meridien is another hidden gem that shouldn’t be missed.

The United Nations Headquarters

The United Nations has been headquartered in the Turtle Bay neighborhood of Midtown East Manhattan since 1951. While the Secretariat building is most commonly featured in Hollywood films and other depictions, the UN Headquarters also features the domed General Assembly building, the Dag Hammarskjöld Library, and the newly renovated Conference and Visitors Center. One-hour guided tours provide visitors “a behind-the-scenes view of the UN at work,” with stops at the redesigned General Assembly Hall, the Security Council Chamber, the Trusteeship Council Chamber, and the Economic and Social Council Chamber in the Conference Building.

Chrysler Building

Construction on the Chrysler Building began in 1929 and was completed in one year, extending to an elevation of 1,048 feet to overtake the Woolworth Building and 40 Wall Street in Lower Manhattan as the world’s tallest in the “Race to the Sky.” While the Chrysler Building only held this title for one year, it remains one of the world’s most famous skyscrapers, appearing regularly in feature films and groundbreaking television shows like Godzilla, Spider-Man and Sex and the City. Home to large, open workspaces and traditional office suites from the low-rise floors to the upper tower levels, the lobby was designed for the community by famed architect David Rockwell, with a cafe, bar, diner, sushi bar and “all-new tourist experience.”

The Summit at One Vanderbilt

Atop the 73rd floor of One Vanderilt — a skyscraper extending to 1,401 feet above ground at the corner of 42nd Street and Vanderbilt Avenue — is The Summit, offering “New York’s most thrilling view” at a discount to New York City residents. Designed inside by Snøhetta, The Summit includes Ascent, with glass-floored elevators that take you to an observation deck at 1,200 feet; Levitation, composed of enclosed glass balconies protruding from the building’s facade; Summit, with a glass parapet and Danny Meyer-operated bar; an “infinity room” with 40-foot ceilings; an interactive art exhibit from Kenzo Digital; and a green space, advertised as the highest urban “alpine meadow” in the world.

St. Patrick’s Cathedral

St. Patrick’s Cathedral is the largest Gothic Revival Catholic cathedral in North America, designed by James Renwick Jr., and dedicated in 1879. Occupying an entire city block directly across from Rockefeller Center, St. Patrick’s welcomes more than five million devotees and tourists each year who visit to light candles or experience the magnificent, iconic architecture. The National Historic Landmark is clad in marble, with dozens of stained-glass windows, 19 bells, two pipe organs, and bronze doors that form the cathedral’s main entrance, flanked by towers with spires rising nearly 330 feet.

St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church IN Midtown East - Glenwood NYC

St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church

Designated a National Historic Landmark for its early 20th-century ecclesiastical architecture, the Bertram Goodhue-designed St. Bartholomew’s Church has been serving the Episcopal community on the east side of Park Avenue since 1835. Parishioners and visitors alike visit St. Bart’s for its Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ, the largest in New York and one of the 10 largest worldwide, as well as the Church’s renowned choir that has appeared on The Today Show and Good Morning America.

Central Synagogue

Designed by Henry Fernbach as an homage to the Dohány Street Synagogue in Budapest, the Moorish Revival-style Central Synagogue opened in 1872 on the corner of Lexington Avenue and 55th Street in the Midtown East neighborhood of New York City. Today, the National Historic Landmark is among the oldest existing synagogues in the United States and has been in continuous use longer than all but one synagogue in the state of New York. Dedicated to the interests and needs of the Reform Judaism community, Central Synagogue uses traditional and alternative modes of prayer, and offers a daily morning minyan, weekly Shabbat and annual holiday services, community and family celebrations, “Tot Shabbat” for children, and healing and other services.

Ford Foundation Center for Social Justice

Home to the Ford Foundation and three other organizations dedicated to social good, the Ford Foundation Center for Social Justice features 81,000 square feet of meeting space, as well as an atrium garden and social justice art gallery open to the public. The atrium garden highlighted by Architect Magazine includes 39 species of trees, vines and shrubs, a reflecting pool, a reverberating fountain and a “sensory garden” with braille signage and audio descriptions. The Ford Foundation Gallery offers incredible exhibitions, like For Which It Stands and Radical Love.

Japan Society

For more than 100 years Japan Society has supported international exchanges in arts and culture, business, policy and education between Japan and the United States. Designed by famed Japanese architect Junzo Yoshimura, the organization’s landmark New York headquarters opened near the UN building on 47th Street and 1st Avenue in 1971. Today, art exhibitions, dance, theater, film, language classes, sake tastings and much more are offered against “a stunning backdrop” of indoor gardens, with a reflecting pool and waterfall. Facilities include a 260-seat theater, art gallery, language center and library.

The Morgan Library & Museum

In 1902, American financier Pierpont Morgan hired architect Charles Follen McKim to design a library for his expanding collection of rare books and manuscripts. Adjacent to Morgan’s home on the corner of Madison Avenue and 36th Street, McKim built a grand structure of pink marble inspired by the villas of the Italian Renaissance era. With its recessed portico flanked by stone lionesses, the National Historic Landmark remains the heart of The Morgan Library & Museum complex that today covers half a city block in the heart of Midtown East Manhattan. Over the years, The Morgan has continued to acquire rare materials and important music manuscripts, early children’s books and pieces of Americana, while expanding its physical footprint. In 2006, Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano added 75,000 square feet to the campus, including a new performance hall, cafe, restaurant, shop and reading room, as well as an Italian piazza-style central court that connects three historical buildings with three new steel-and-glass pavilions. In addition to touring The Morgan’s exhibitions, visitors here enjoy a variety of musical performances, lectures, readings, films and family programs.

Waldorf-Astoria

Waldorf-Astoria New York may be the most famous hotel on earth. Immortalized in film and iconic for its luxury and glamour, the 47-story Art Deco landmark building was completed in 1931 and has hosted the rich and powerful ever since. Frank Sinatra kept a suite from 1979 to 1988; Herbert Hoover lived here for more than 30 years after his retirement. Today, there are more than 1,000 luxury rooms, along with three main restaurants — Peacock Alley, The Bull and Bear Steak House, and La Chine — and Sir Harry’s Bar, all open to guests and visitors alike.

7 Good Habits To Pick Up This Season https://www.glenwoodnyc.com/manhattan-living/7-good-habits-to-pick-up-this-fall/ Mon, 30 Nov 2020 17:00:30 +0000 http://glenwoodstage.wpengine.com/?p=20151 Start making good habits this fall so by the time New Years comes around you are ready for some new resolutions! Here are some simple lifestyle changes you can make to live better starting right away.

The post 7 Good Habits To Pick Up This Season appeared first on NYC Luxury Apartments for Rent | Glenwood Management.

]]>
Why wait for the new year to make a resolution? If you start now, you will have made some good habits before the end of 2020! Here are some ideas to pick up on this winter season, such as drinking more water, taking time out of every day for self-care, and increasing your daily step count with a walk in nature.

Water being poured into a glass

Drink More Water

Especially with being smack in the middle of holiday season, drinking more water will help you to see huge benefits in your daily life. Did you know that often times when we think we’re hungry, we’re really thirsty? Try drinking a glass of room temperature water before every meal and snack, and it will not only keep you super hydrated, but it will also help cut back on unneeded calories. You can easily keep up with this habit from the comfort of your Glenwood apartment, as most buildings have filtered water throughout. Bonus points for squeezing fresh lemon into your water!

Tips For Making This A Habit: To make drinking water part of your daily routine, invest in a water bottle you love and carry it with you at all times. If you’re into tech, download the app My Water, which will help you track your daily intake of water. That way, if it’s 3pm and you’re only to 18% of your daily goal, you will be getting reminders to chug, chug, chug!

Self-Care

Diffusers and essential oils on a table with floweres

Self-care is actually a habit that should be easy for you to incorporate, because it’s all about loving on yourself! On airplanes, they always make the announcement at the beginning of a flight to put on your air mask before assisting others, and that’s pretty much what self-care is. It’s all about taking care of yourself first, so that you will be able to take care of your family, job, friends, and all the other tasks that make up everyday life. Many things can fall under the umbrella of self-care, but some examples are massages, pedicures, or your favorite restorative yoga class.

Tips For Making This A Habit: Pinpoint the self-care rituals that most excite you. If you really anticipate the ritual (i.e. your Monday night meditation class), you will be more likely to stick to it, even when the rest of life gets really busy.

Reading is one of the best habits for intellectual development you can pick up (and no, it doesn’t matter what you’re reading as long as you’re doing it!) However, as we get older it seems harder to find the time to read. Consider having certain portions of your day only to be used for reading. These can be your subway commute, the hour before bedtime, or when you’re waiting to go into appointments or meetings.

Eat More Fresh Food

Kale, avocado, peppers and tomatoes on a table with brown bags

While “eating healthy” can feel like a daunting task this time of year, “eating more fresh food” actually feels quite doable! Instead of telling yourself you can’t indulge in the cheeseball and pumpkin pie, simply tell yourself that you have to first eat your day’s worth of fresh vegetables and fruit, and then it’s fair game.

Tips For Making This A Habit: Jump start your day with fresh fruit. It can be eaten whole, sauteed, thrown into a smoothie, baked into muffins, or tossed on top of your oatmeal, yogurt, or cereal. Then you’ve already mastered this habit before leaving your Glenwood apartment!

Walk More

A person in grey sweatpants and sneakers walking

If you’ve ever wondered why New Yorkers are in better shape than people in other parts of the country (no judgement!), it’s because we have to walk so much more, and can’t rely on cars to get us everywhere! By increasing our daily step count, it’s automatic exercise.

Tips For Making This A Habit: Give yourself a personal daily step goal, and aim to meet it every day by tracking it on your smartphone or with your smart jewelry/watch. If you reach your goal daily for 30 days, reward yourself with a treat!

Get Out In Nature

Whether you live Downtown, on the Westside, or on the Upper East Side, you have a beautiful park at your fingertips! Take advantage of the greenery and make a point to get into nature several times a week. This will help alleviate stress and anxiety, plus it is great for your physical body as you breathe in fresh air.

Tips For Making This A Habit: While you are increasing your step count (see above), choose to take some of those steps through a park. You’re killing two birds with one stone!

Keep Clutter At Bay

There’s something to be said for a clear space equaling a clear mind, right? Likewise, a cluttered space tends to make us feel more on edge. Whether you’re choosing to keep on top of the clutter so that you can find things easier or so your Grand Tier home looks spick and span for last minute holiday visitors, taking care of clutter immediately helps in more ways than one.

Tips For Making This A Habit: Simply live by the motto that “everything has a place”, and put things back in their place as soon as you are done using them. Realistically, it takes the same amount of time to hang a jacket in the hall closet as it does to drape it on the back of your dining room chair.

What habits are you hoping to pick up this fall? Let us know on Facebook and Twitter!

Use our guide to gather some inspiration on how to spend a snowy day in NYC with your kids.

The NYC snow day is inevitable, so have a plan to keep your kids happy when the snow stops them from getting to school! Today we’ll cover our favorite ways to spend a snow day with the littles in NYC…from staying warm inside your Glenwood home with hot cocoa to going out into the winter wonderland and embracing the magic!

Little girl smiling with the snowman she built

Sledding In Central Park

The Upper East Side is ripe with places to go during the first snowfall, namely Central Park! Whether you live in The Andover or The Marlowe, you’ll love the ease of getting to this activity. Bring your child’s sled to one of the many hills in the park and go to town! We’re particular fans of Pilgrim Hill and Cedar Hill, both located on the Eastside in the 70’s. Or, if you’re looking for other areas of NYC to enjoy sledding, check out this article on the best sledding in Manhattan.

Local’s Tip: Not everyone keeps a sled lying around in their apartment, and for good reason. They are bulky, take up precious closet space, and really are only items that are used a handful of times a year, if that. A great alternative? A flattened piece of cardboard! Use a recycled box (there’ss plenty to be lying around in the pre-Christmas season), it will get the job done perfectly.

White ice skates hanging on a red wall

Ice Skating

Ice skating is a beautiful activity to do during snowfalls! Not only do you feel like tiny figurines in a shaken-up snow globe (how magical is that?!) but there’ss also a great chance that it will keep many of the wintertime tourists off the ice, perhaps making the wait time a little less!

Local’s Tip: Sure, you have the ice-skating rinks at Bryant Park, Rockefeller Center, and the lower part of Central Park. But did you know there’ss also a rink in northern Central Park? It’s called Lasker Rink, and is incredibly less packed than the other well-known ones (maybe because it’s filled with mostly locals rather than tourists?) The nearest street entrance is 110th Street and Lenox Avenue, not far from Hampton Court.

Snowman holding wearing a santa hat holding a red snow shovel

Building A Snowman

No matter which park you live closest to (hills or no hills), bringing along a carrot and “magic black hat” for snowman building is an activity kids will adore…from the tiniest or toddlers to the tallest of teenagers! It truly never gets old…even for adults.

A hot coco drink with a peppermint cookie on top

Enjoying Hot Cocoa

Inside activities are especially cozy when it snows. Break out the board games and whip up a batch of hot cocoa! Don’t forget the marshmallows.

Local’s Tip: If you don’t have ingredients on hand to make your own cookies to go along with the hot cocoa, you can order them from Insomnia Cookies!

Relaxing Inside With Popcorn and Movies

And finally, snow days make the perfect days for catching up on favorite family films over a big batch of buttery popcorn.

Local’s Tip: New York often feels very go, go, go! Make this experience as relaxing as possible. Even if it’s barely noon, consider telling the whole family to change into their favorite pair of pj’s, and prepare for a day of snuggles and films together. These are the times that will quickly morph into your favorite winter memories, recounted for years and years to come.

Santaland at Macy’s

If you’re going to see one Santa this season, make it the absolute best! Head to Macy’s Santaland on the Westside in Herald Square for a truly epic holiday experience. Santaland is located on the 8th floor of Macy’s and is open daily through Christmas Eve (December 24th). Admission is free, but do note that visits are done through reservations only. You can simply go onto their website and make a reservation anywhere from 30 minutes to 5 days in advance (and don’t worry, you can also cancel reservations on their site, too, if something comes up.) If you want to document the experience, professional photos are available for purchase with packages starting at $21.99. These would also make great holiday gifts for the grandparents!

Pro Tip: If you’re looking for the speediest way to get through the line, Macy’s suggests visiting Santaland during the week, Monday through Thursdays. Weekends get quite packed! Santaland is super convenient for Glenwood residents living at Emerald Green and Crystal Green.

Radio City Christmas Spectacular

The Radio City Christmas Spectacular is a Midtown East favorite! Happening now through New Year’s Day (January 1st), you can catch the performance that is family friendly, and appropriate for all ages! Tickets start at $46 and go up from there, depending on the date and where you sit in the theater. In addition, there’ss plenty of add-ons you can put onto the package, such as a backstage tour (where you get to meet a Rockette in person!), or a Rockettes 101 experience, which allows you to dance with one of the Rockettes and learn real choreography from the show.

Pro Tip: The line and security for the Christmas Spectacular is understandably quite long and intense. Make sure to arrive early, as their website says that if you arrive less than 30 minutes before showtime, you risk missing the first few numbers.

This will be such a great activity for the whole family! From wintery forrest light scenes to a forest of sweets— there is a light attraction for everyone to enjoy!

Holiday Train Show

Head to Grand Central Terminal for the 17th Annual Holiday Train Show! Located inside the New York Transit Museum Gallery Annex and Store, this train display is truly a delight for kids as well as any train enthusiast! It features Lionel trains traveling along a 34’s long, two-level, “O” gauge model train layout, and the trains depart from a replica of Grand Central Terminal on their way to the North Pole…so cute, right? The train show is free and is open through December 24th, 2019.

Pro Tip: After taking in the train show, head to the Grand Central Holiday Fair, where you can find unique gifts for everyone on your list. The fair is indoors, hence perfect for pushing strollers through and keeping up with kids on the go! And don’t forget to head down to the food court afterwards for a fun family meal.

Tips For Enjoying Events With Kids

Kids require a few extra layers of comfort to enjoy holiday events in the city…after all, New York is crowded, loud, and super cold this time of year! Here are a few tips that will ensure that your kiddos have the very best time enjoying these events, and all the events you bring them to this season.

 • Dress warm! You can always take clothes off, but there’ss nothing to do if you don’t have enough on. Layer your little one with long johns, coats, mittens, a hat, and even wool socks. If everyone is warm, this will cut down on any potential weather-related tantrums or moodiness.
 • Pack snacks and water. While you can typically find food available for purchase anywhere in the city, at events like these it tends to be overpriced junk food (not to mention you’ll have to wait in line for a very long time to buy it.) Instead, come prepared with healthy options you know your kids are into. A happy belly is a happy kid!
 • Bring distractions (that are not your phone). When waiting in line at the theater or to see Santa for an hour, it’s totally normal that kids will get fussy and irritated. Rather than give your smart phone to them (which you may want/need to use), come prepared with an activity they can easily do on the go…perhaps the “paint with water pens” sets, handheld games, or a Rubik’s Cube. These activities will entertain and keep them occupied, and they will be in a better, more focused mood for when the event actually begins.

How will your kids celebrate the holidays in NYC? Let us know on Facebook and Twitter!

Visiting The Rockefeller Center Tree Lighting 2019 https://www.glenwoodnyc.com/manhattan-living/visiting-the-rockefeller-center-tree-lighting/ Mon, 18 Nov 2019 20:09:27 +0000 http://glenwoodstage.wpengine.com/?p=20163 Thinking about visiting this year's Rockefeller Center Tree lighting in NYC? Here's everything you need to know before you brace the crowds and the cold.

The 87th Annual Rockefeller Center Tree lighting will take place on Wednesday, December 4th this year. This is your guide to attending the tree lighting, a journey every New Yorker should make at least once! Read on for some background about this year’s tree, including where it came from, how tall it is, and how many lights it took to make it a reality.

Great Fact About The Tree Lighting

For thirteen years straight, the Christmas tree will be donated to Habitat for Humanity once it has been taken down after this holiday season! The tree becomes lumbar that the organization will use to build homes. Truly the holiday gem of Midtown East!

Experience Relaxation at The Bristol

Take a step back from your busy lifestyle and relax at The Bristol. Tour available units today.

Attending The Tree Lighting

Mark your calendars for the evening of December 4th, when the lights will be live for the first time on the Rockefeller tree! From 7pm to 9pm there will be live performances by top singers and bands as well as the Radio City Rockettes. At 9pm on the dot the lights will be sparkle upon the tree for the very first time. All of this will be taking place at Rockefeller Plaza between West 48th and West 51st Streets and Fifth and Sixth Avenues.

So you’re probably wondering: “Okay, so how early do I have to get there to score a decent spot?” Unfortunately, you’ll have to plan several hours in advance since this is such a popular event. To ensure that you nestle into a spot where you can actually see what’s going on, it’s recommended to get to the tree no later than 3pm (the earlier you are, the better the spot!) And if seeing the performers is high on your list, arrive closer to noon (there’ss very limited spots near the stage.)

The world famous 2016 Rockefeller Center Christmas tree in New York City.

Things to know:

 • The tree lighting is free and open to the public on a first come, first served basis.
 • Like any large event, security measures will be in full force. You will not be allowed to bring any large bags, backpacks, or umbrellas into the area.
 • If you prefer to watch the tree lighting from the comfort of your own apartment, it’s broadcast live on NBC from 7pm to 9pm, and is also available streaming through NBC.

The location is ideal for residents living at The Bamford and The Bristol, since the lighting is just a few short blocks away!

Visiting The Tree At Other Times

If braving the crowds isn’t your idea of a good time, know that the tree will remain lit and can be viewed until 9pm on January 7, 2019 (it’s lit daily from 5:30pm until 11:30pm, except on New Years Eve when the lights turn off at 9pm).

December is obviously going to draw the crowds no matter what day or time you swing by, but the influx of tourists does tend to die down once Christmas hits (The tree will be practically desolate on Christmas morning! And another perk about visiting on Christmas? It’s the only time that the tree is lit 24 hours.) So if you’re a local Glenwood resident you have the advantage of being able to plan your visit post-holiday rush, really savoring the beauty of the spruce and the spirit of the season, sans the crowds.

And don’t forget to check out last year’s post on where to catch all the Christmas tree lightings in New York City!

What child does not love dogs…especially ones that are donning Halloween costumes?! Plus, we’re pretty sure this Downtown event is just as amusing for parents as it is their littles…bonus points. On Sunday, October 19th, head to the Fountain Plaza in Washington Square Park to revel in the Dog Halloween Costume Party, in which breeds from all over the city will be prancing about in their Halloween finest! The event lasts from 11am to 3pm, and is free to attend.

Happy jack-o-lanterns

A truly special thing happens in Central Park every October–the Halloween Pumpkin Flotilla! This event is happening on October 30th this year from 4pm to 7pm. Families are encouraged to bring a carved pumpkin (which is another fun Halloween activity to do at your Glenwood apartment ahead of time), which will they set afloat near the Charles A. Dana Discovery Center in the park. Along with the magic of watching hundreds of pumpkins float across the Harlem Meer, kids will also be able to participate in a costume parade, spooky stories, and crafts. The event is free to attend, and is ideal for residents living on the Upper East Side, especially those at Hampton Court.

Dance The Monster Mash At the Museum of the City of New York

6 kids in halloween costumes like a mummy, bat, and pumpkin!

The Museum of the City of New York on the Upper East Side is having a wonderful family event that actually falls on Halloween, which is Tuesday, October 31st. Lasting from 2pm to 5pm, they will be hosting a haunted scavenger hunt, telling spooky stories, decorating pumpkins, and even throwing a Monster Mash Dance Party! The event is included with admission to the museum, and costumes are, of course, encouraged! We particularly love this event because it can be appropriate even if you have a range in your children’s ages–just as entertaining for 12 year olds as it is for 2 year olds!

Good Old Fashioned Trick-Or-Treating!

Midtown East is hosting their annual Trick-or-Treat with Midtown East on Halloween. Start at the tramway, where you can pick up candy bags and a map of all the 50+ participating businesses, then make your way through the neighborhood. Once you’ve collected all your goodies, kids can participate in face painting and photo booth fun! The event is completely free and lasts from 3pm to 7pm, which makes it easy to coordinate around naps and bedtimes!
