Stuffed butternut squash with chickpeas, cranberries, quinoa cooked in nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon. Thanksgiving dinner recipe. Vegan healthy seasonal fall or autumn food

If you have wanted to experiment with healthy side dishes to balance out your Thanksgiving meal, this is a great year to get started! Since this year calls for Thanksgiving to be celebrated with just those in your immediate household, you don’t have to worry about everyone in your extended family’s meal preferences. We have found some great recipes for you to try to make in your Glenwood kitchen! Keep reading to find out more.

Vegan Creamed Spinach

A small casserole dish of spinach in cream sauce with fall table decor like leaves and pinecones

Creamed spinach is one of my most favorite fall and winter side dishes! But, I know it is far from healthy, so this year I have found a great recipe from Bon Appétit that is vegan and I won’t feel as guilty going for that second serving! This recipe will serve approx. 4 people.

Ingredients:

  • 11 4oz packages silken tofu, drained
  • ¼ cup grapeseed, vegetable, or other neutral oil
  • 8 scallions, thinly sliced
  • 13″ piece ginger, peeled, finely grated
  • 1 chile (such as serrano or Fresno), thinly sliced
  • 5 garlic cloves, thinly sliced
  • 4 bunches mature spinach (about 2 lb.), trimmed, torn into large pieces, pinch of Kosher salt

Directions:

Step 1:

Purée tofu in a blender until smooth and the consistency of heavy cream. Transfer to a small bowl.

Step 2:

Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium. Cook scallions, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 3 minutes. Add ginger, chile, and garlic and cook, stirring occasionally, until garlic is softened and mixture is fragrant, about 2 minutes. Working in batches, add handfuls of spinach, letting it wilt slightly before adding more and stirring occasionally, until all the spinach is in the pan. Cover and cook until spinach is wilted and bright green, about 3 minutes. Uncover and reduce heat to medium-low. Stir in tofu mixture and cook until warmed through, about 2 minutes. Taste and season with salt.

Quinoa Salad With Sweet Potato and Kale

A beautiful, richly colored salad that has a fall flavor spectrum is a perfect side dish for your Thanksgiving meal. This recipe from Cookie and Kate is as delicious as it is healthy.

Ingredients:
  • 2 medium sweet potatoes (about ¾ pound total), peeled and diced into ½-inch pieces
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Salt and pepper
  • 1 cup quinoa, rinsed
  • 1 ¾ cups vegetable broth
  • 2 cups stemmed and finely chopped curly kale
  • ½ cup roasted, salted sunflower seeds*
  • ⅓ cup thinly sliced fresh basil
Pesto dressing (yields about 1 ½ cups, so you’ll have extra leftover)
  • ½ cup firmly packed fresh basil leaves
  • ¼ cup firmly packed fresh parsley leaves
  • ½ cup olive oil
  • ¼ cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 clove garlic, roughly chopped
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup or agave nectar
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • Pepper, to taste
Directions:
  1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a large, rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup.
  2. To prepare the sweet potatoes, transfer them to the prepared baking sheet and toss them with 2 tablespoons olive oil. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and arrange in a single layer. Bake for 10 minutes, then toss and bake for 10 to 15 minutes longer, until tender and browning. Set the pan aside to cool.
  3. Meanwhile, combine the rinsed quinoa and broth in a medium saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, then decrease the heat to maintain a simmer, cover, and cook until the quinoa has absorbed all the liquid, about 20 minutes. Fluff the quinoa with a fork and set aside to cool.
  4. To make the vinaigrette, combine all of the ingredients in a blender or food processor and process until mostly smooth, but with small pieces of herbs still visible.
  5. Transfer the chopped kale to a large serving bowl. Sprinkle with a dash of salt and then use your hands to “massage” the kale, grabbing big handfuls at a time and gently squeezing them in your fist until the kale is darker in color and more fragrant, about 15 seconds.
  6. Add the sweet potatoes, quinoa, kale, sunflower seeds and sliced basil to the bowl. Drizzle with about ⅓ cup dressing and gently toss until all of the ingredients are evenly coated. Taste and mix in more dressing if desired.
  7. Serve the salad at room temperature or cold. Leftovers will keep well in the refrigerator, covered, for up to 2 days.

I made this dish and loved it! I added some pomegranate and chickpeas because my husband loves them and served it inside a roasted squash!

Stuffed eggs with egg yolk, bacon, mustard and dill, close up view on a white dish

Devilish Eggs

Deviled eggs are a great appetizer to put out for your family while you finish preparing your Thanksgiving meal! This deviled egg recipe by Ellie Krieger found on the Food Network has the same great flavor, but is in fact healthier!

Ingredients:

  • 1 dozen eggs
  • 2/3 cup silken tofu, drained
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon hot sauce, plus more to taste
  • 2 teaspoons prepared horseradish
  • 2 tablespoons chopped chives
  • Salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika

Directions:

  1. Place the eggs in a large saucepan and cover with water. Place over high heat and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 9 minutes. Remove the eggs from water and run under cold water for about 1 minute or until cool enough to touch. Peel eggs under cold running water.
  2. Slice the eggs in half lengthwise. Scoop out the yolks and discard 6 of them or save for another use. Set aside the whites.
  3. Place the remaining yolks in a medium bowl and mash with the tofu, mayonnaise, mustard, hot sauce, horseradish and chives. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Spoon the mixture into the corner of a plastic bag and snip off the end. Pipe the yolk mixture into the egg whites. Arrange on a platter and sprinkle with paprika.
Beet salad with spinach and minced apple. Isolated on a white background.

Beet And Apple Salad

This recipe from Food & Wine by George Mendes blends fall flavor and color into a light, healthy salad perfect for your Thanksgiving table!

Ingredients
  • 4 large beets (2 1/2 pounds)
  • 5 thyme sprigs
  • ½ cup extra-virgin olive oil (plus more for drizzling)
  • Salt and freshly ground pepper
  • ¼ cup apple-cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 3 tablespoons prepared horseradish
  • ⅓ cup salted pistachios (chopped)
  • 1 green apple (thinly sliced)
Directions

Step 1:

Preheat the oven to 375°. In a baking dish, lightly drizzle the beets and thyme with olive oil. Season with salt and pepper. Cover with foil and roast until the beets are tender, about 1 hour and 45 minutes. Let cool, then peel the beets and cut them into 3/4-inch dice.

Step 2:

In a large bowl, whisk the vinegar with the mustard. Whisk in the remaining 1/2 cup of oil until emulsified. Add the horseradish and season with salt and pepper; toss with the beets and pistachios. Transfer the beets to a platter, top with the apple and serve.

Tips For Moving On Short Notice https://www.glenwoodnyc.com/manhattan-living/tips-for-moving-on-short-notice/ Tue, 11 Jul 2023 10:00:00 +0000 http://glenwoodstage.wpengine.com/?p=19691 Moving can be difficult, especially when the decision to pack up comes on short notice. Use these tips to make your move a breeze, even if you don't have a lot of time to spare!

Pile of moving boxes and household stuff in living room

Sometimes circumstances necessitate a fast move that can take you out of your comfort zone. There are a number of things you can do to prepare for a quick getaway. It’s a good time to pare down, and get items out of your life that you no longer need to carry from place to place. Just because time is of the essence, does not mean that the move has to be done in a haphazard way. Everything should be well labeled so that you have a system in place to ensure the packing and unpacking goes relatively easily. Professional help can be lined up, and there are always those friends that you can count on. Below, we’ve rounded up our top tips for moving on short notice.

Step #1: Make Reservations

Man holding clipboard on blurred boxes background

Assuming you have the move-in date set for your new place, don’t waste a second making reservations for your move. Whether this comes in the form of hiring movers to do the whole thing, renting a U-Haul to do it yourself, or calling in a favor from a friend with a truck, figure out which method best suits your life circumstances and secure the date now. Especially during the summer, you’ll have a lot of people who are also in the same camp as you, and the last thing you want to find out if you wait until the last minute is that there’ss no availability. This will only leave you scrambling for another option, but also paying much higher than you would have earlier in the process. (However, don’t let that summer is a busy time deter you from moving. Here’s 5 reasons to move during the summer!)

Step #2: Write A List Of The Major Things To Keep, Sell, Or Donate

Person sorting through boxes, keep, donate, discard

Obviously, you’re in a time crunch here so we’re not talking about going through your closet item by item and holding them up to see what sparks joy. Instead, we’re talking more big-ticket items, such as furniture, rugs, and appliances. Ask yourself questions such as:

–Am I downsizing of upsizing?

–Will the California King bed fit into my new bedroom?

–Does my new apartment come fully furnished with all major appliances, or will I be expected to get my own (such is the case sometimes for apartments in smaller buildings with washer/dryer hookups.)

Next, make a list of all the big pieces that make the cut, as well as ones that you will have no need for in your next home. For example, if you’re moving into a NYC apartment with less living room space than your current home in the suburbs, there’ss a good chance the wrap-around sofa sectional won’t be the best use of space. Figure out if you want to donate it to a charity that accepts used furniture (such as the Salvation Army or Housing Works), or if it’s in good enough condition to take the time to photograph it, post it on a site such as Craigslist or LetGo, and coordinate details to sell it.

Step #3: Stock Up With Packing Gear

Now that you have all the details of the move squared away and are left with only the items which will come with you on your move, it’s time to load up on packing gear. Boxes can be gathered from local stores for free, such as your local wine shop, but again, if you’re in a real rush the most time effective thing to do is to use a store such as The Container Store to secure all your boxes, bubble wrap, containers, tape, and markers. You can purchase the items right from their website and have them deliver it straight to your NYC home for same day delivery, how easy is that?! Glenwood residents can all benefit from this, whether you’re moving from The Bristol in Midtown East or The Encore on the Westside.

Step #4: Pack With A Method

Finally, the day has come to pack! Here’s a little tip though: it takes just as much time to pack in a messy rush as it does an organized one. So, rather than throwing items haphazardly into boxes, take the time to put a method into place. Packing room by room and clearly labeling each box is one easy way to do this. Trust us, your future self will thank you once you get into your new home!

Step #5: Organize A Cleaning Service

Assuming you don’t have the time (or energy, at this point) to spend a solid half a day cleaning your apartment once all the boxes are gone, consider hiring a maid service to come in to do the dirty work for you. While hiring a cleaning service does cost money, it’s absolutely worth shelling out a little in order to get your security deposit back on your apartment! And while you’re at it, it could be totally worth having a cleaning service do a move-in scrub for your new home, too. Starting out on a clean slate after a stressful move is worth its weight in gold.

And don’t forget to load your phone up with favorite playlists and podcasts, or set a reminder to call a friend or long distance family member during these walks. It’ll make the time go by in a breeze, plus you’ll feel extra productive!

One of the simplest ways to sneak in some extra exercise that also takes the least amount of time is to exercise in the comfort of your very own home. If you’re watching your current go-to show, make a point to do crunches, jumping jacks, or hold a plank during all the commercial breaks. Or, if you want to multitask working out with cleaning, set a timer for 15 minutes and run around the apartment with a giant basket, returning everything that’s out of place to its proper spot. Another easy idea? Put on your favorite upbeat music and have a dance party with your partner or kids! None of these things require any extra equipment, but all are guaranteed to break a sweat!

If you are looking for exercise classes online, there are a ton to choose from. Currently, some very popular at home classes are: Tracey Anderson, Melissa Wood Health, and Chloe Ting.

NYC Luxury Living in Midtown East

With easy access to every corner of the city that never sleeps, and all the bright lights, culture and mystique that make Manhattan famous, Midtown East is the ideal location for families and high-powered professionals alike.

This classic, diverse New York City neighborhood is home to notable landmarks like the Chrysler Building and United Nations headquarters, transportation hub Grand Central Terminal and world-famous high-end shopping at Saks Fifth Avenue and the flagship Tiffany’s store. Centrally located, it also borders Bryant Park and Rockefeller Center.

While most famous for its shopping and dining, Midtown East is a sophisticated, global community, home to most of the embassies, consulates and missions in New York City, along with luxury high rises on quiet, tree-lined cross streets in Sutton Place and Turtle Bay.

Midtown East NYC’s Main Attractions

Hudson Yards

Hudson Yards is home to 14 acres of public plazas, gardens, groves and outdoor art installations, more than 100 diverse shops and culinary experiences, the first Equinox Hotel, and modern office space and residences, as well as cultural

Shopping in Midtown East

When it comes to world-class shopping, few places on earth rival Midtown East Manhattan, most well-known for Madison and Fifth Avenues, where you can find the flagship stores of Chanel, Giorgio Armani, Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue, Tiffany & Co., and so many other iconic brands.

Eating in Midtown East

If Midtown East isn’t the shopping capital of the world, it’s certainly home to some of New York City’s best restaurants, including nearly all of the most highly rated steakhouses like Bobby Van’s, Sparks Steakhouse, Wolfgang’s Steakhouse, Ben & Jack’s Steakhouse, Morton’s The Steakhouse, The Capital Grille, Smith & Wollensky, and The Grill in the Seagram building. Or, if  you’re in the mood for burgers, Burger Joint at Le Parker Meridien is another hidden gem that shouldn’t be missed.

The United Nations Headquarters

The United Nations has been headquartered in the Turtle Bay neighborhood of Midtown East Manhattan since 1951. While the Secretariat building is most commonly featured in Hollywood films and other depictions, the UN Headquarters also features the domed General Assembly building, the Dag Hammarskjöld Library, and the newly renovated Conference and Visitors Center. One-hour guided tours provide visitors “a behind-the-scenes view of the UN at work,” with stops at the redesigned General Assembly Hall, the Security Council Chamber, the Trusteeship Council Chamber, and the Economic and Social Council Chamber in the Conference Building.

Aerial shot of NYC's Chrysler Building - Glenwood NYC

Chrysler Building

Construction on the Chrysler Building began in 1929 and was completed in one year, extending to an elevation of 1,048 feet to overtake the Woolworth Building and 40 Wall Street in Lower Manhattan as the world’s tallest in the “Race to the Sky.” While the Chrysler Building only held this title for one year, it remains one of the world’s most famous skyscrapers, appearing regularly in feature films and groundbreaking television shows like Godzilla, Spider-Man and Sex and the City. Home to large, open workspaces and traditional office suites from the low-rise floors to the upper tower levels, the lobby was designed for the community by famed architect David Rockwell, with a cafe, bar, diner, sushi bar and “all-new tourist experience.”

The Summit at One Vanderbilt

Atop the 73rd floor of One Vanderilt — a skyscraper extending to 1,401 feet above ground at the corner of 42nd Street and Vanderbilt Avenue — is The Summit, offering “New York’s most thrilling view” at a discount to New York City residents. Designed inside by Snøhetta, The Summit includes Ascent, with glass-floored elevators that take you to an observation deck at 1,200 feet; Levitation, composed of enclosed glass balconies protruding from the building’s facade; Summit, with a glass parapet and Danny Meyer-operated bar; an “infinity room” with 40-foot ceilings; an interactive art exhibit from Kenzo Digital; and a green space, advertised as the highest urban “alpine meadow” in the world.

St. Patrick’s Cathedral

St. Patrick’s Cathedral is the largest Gothic Revival Catholic cathedral in North America, designed by James Renwick Jr., and dedicated in 1879. Occupying an entire city block directly across from Rockefeller Center, St. Patrick’s welcomes more than five million devotees and tourists each year who visit to light candles or experience the magnificent, iconic architecture. The National Historic Landmark is clad in marble, with dozens of stained-glass windows, 19 bells, two pipe organs, and bronze doors that form the cathedral’s main entrance, flanked by towers with spires rising nearly 330 feet.

St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church IN Midtown East - Glenwood NYC

St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church

Designated a National Historic Landmark for its early 20th-century ecclesiastical architecture, the Bertram Goodhue-designed St. Bartholomew’s Church has been serving the Episcopal community on the east side of Park Avenue since 1835. Parishioners and visitors alike visit St. Bart’s for its Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ, the largest in New York and one of the 10 largest worldwide, as well as the Church’s renowned choir that has appeared on The Today Show and Good Morning America.

Central Synagogue

Designed by Henry Fernbach as an homage to the Dohány Street Synagogue in Budapest, the Moorish Revival-style Central Synagogue opened in 1872 on the corner of Lexington Avenue and 55th Street in the Midtown East neighborhood of New York City. Today, the National Historic Landmark is among the oldest existing synagogues in the United States and has been in continuous use longer than all but one synagogue in the state of New York. Dedicated to the interests and needs of the Reform Judaism community, Central Synagogue uses traditional and alternative modes of prayer, and offers a daily morning minyan, weekly Shabbat and annual holiday services, community and family celebrations, “Tot Shabbat” for children, and healing and other services.

Ford Foundation Center for Social Justice

Home to the Ford Foundation and three other organizations dedicated to social good, the Ford Foundation Center for Social Justice features 81,000 square feet of meeting space, as well as an atrium garden and social justice art gallery open to the public. The atrium garden highlighted by Architect Magazine includes 39 species of trees, vines and shrubs, a reflecting pool, a reverberating fountain and a “sensory garden” with braille signage and audio descriptions. The Ford Foundation Gallery offers incredible exhibitions, like For Which It Stands and Radical Love.

Japan Society

For more than 100 years Japan Society has supported international exchanges in arts and culture, business, policy and education between Japan and the United States. Designed by famed Japanese architect Junzo Yoshimura, the organization’s landmark New York headquarters opened near the UN building on 47th Street and 1st Avenue in 1971. Today, art exhibitions, dance, theater, film, language classes, sake tastings and much more are offered against “a stunning backdrop” of indoor gardens, with a reflecting pool and waterfall. Facilities include a 260-seat theater, art gallery, language center and library.

The Morgan Library & Museum

In 1902, American financier Pierpont Morgan hired architect Charles Follen McKim to design a library for his expanding collection of rare books and manuscripts. Adjacent to Morgan’s home on the corner of Madison Avenue and 36th Street, McKim built a grand structure of pink marble inspired by the villas of the Italian Renaissance era. With its recessed portico flanked by stone lionesses, the National Historic Landmark remains the heart of The Morgan Library & Museum complex that today covers half a city block in the heart of Midtown East Manhattan. Over the years, The Morgan has continued to acquire rare materials and important music manuscripts, early children’s books and pieces of Americana, while expanding its physical footprint. In 2006, Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano added 75,000 square feet to the campus, including a new performance hall, cafe, restaurant, shop and reading room, as well as an Italian piazza-style central court that connects three historical buildings with three new steel-and-glass pavilions. In addition to touring The Morgan’s exhibitions, visitors here enjoy a variety of musical performances, lectures, readings, films and family programs.

Waldorf-Astoria

Waldorf-Astoria New York may be the most famous hotel on earth. Immortalized in film and iconic for its luxury and glamour, the 47-story Art Deco landmark building was completed in 1931 and has hosted the rich and powerful ever since. Frank Sinatra kept a suite from 1979 to 1988; Herbert Hoover lived here for more than 30 years after his retirement. Winter is coming, are you ready? Today we will cover tips for preparing your apartment for winter, such as ways to make the apartment feel cozy and warm, as well as preparing indoor activities for the inevitable NYC snow day.

Cozy throw blanket, tea and book open on a couch

Bring Out The Throw Blankets!

It’s the perfect time to transition your Glenwood apartment decor, getting it cozy for the upcoming months of chilly weather. A simple way to do this is to bring your throw blankets out of storage, and drape them over your sofa and beds for a layer of extra snuggles. Whether you’re staying in for the night watching Netflix or huddling under the covers in bed with a good book, you’ll appreciate the warmth!

If you don’t have throw blankets in storage from last season, head to your local Pottery Barn or West Elm to pick up some seasonal ones. They have locations located on the Westside, quite near The Encore and Hawthorn Park.

Choose Luxury Amenities at The Encore

The Encore offers pristine apartments with the finest amenities and services. Contact us today for a showing.

Add Seasonal Scents

Fall and winter scents like cinnamon, and clove spread out on a table

There’s nothing quite like walking into an apartment that smells like baked apple pie or warm pumpkin bread. While having these items baking in the oven 24/7 is not an actual reality, you can certainly incorporate essential oils and melting wax diffusers to create the essence all season long! Head to your local fragrance store, such as Diptyque on the Upper East Side, and pick up a few of their seasonal scents. Placed strategically around your apartment, such as the kitchen, living room, bedroom, and guest bathroom, your home will be smelling like a winter sanctuary in no time.

Prepare Indoor Games

Board games spread out on a table

Indoor games are just as important for the wintertime whether you have kiddos or are in a house of adults. When the nights get dark at 5pm and the weather is snowy out, it’s nice to be prepared with inside activities.

For homes with children, consider putting together an arts and craft kit. Depending on the ages of your kids, these can include things such as play dough, finger paint, sand art, coloring books, and jewelry making supplies.

And for homes with adults, load up on timeless board games! Cult favorites include Monopoly, Scrabble, Life, Uno, and of course a deck of cards. These games are good for most all ages (sans the extremely little tots), which make them perfect for the whole family to get in on. And don’t discount the pleasure a puzzle can bring, too…having it sit out on the coffee table to be worked on little by little throughout the season is a great way to pass the time.

Load Up On Warming Foods And Snacks

The last thing you want to have to think about during a snowstorm is running to the grocery store. Prepare ahead and load up on cozy wintertime goodies, such as hot chocolate and marshmallows, ingredients for a homemade soup or stew, and buttery popcorn pouches for popping during Christmas movie marathons. For those of you who live at The Pavilion, the food shop located in-house at the shopping arcade means you don’t even have to leave the building to stock up!

Pick Up Seasonal and New Release Books

A stack of books opened on a blue background

You can call your local bookstore and purchase a book for curbside order and pick up a huge stack of books with seasonal themes of the holidays or wintertime in general. These are great to keep in your children’s rooms to read before bedtime, and to really incorporate the season into their lives.

Also, check out the New York Times review on new release books that interest you and pick those books up for yourself! You won’t be without a book on hand all season long, which makes those cold Saturday afternoons pleasurable. Cuddling up with your throw blanket, hot cocoa, pumpkin spice candle, and book as you watch the snow fall outside your window. Wintertime perfection!

Fall is here and it’s time to decorate your Glenwood apartment to reflect the change of seasons! We’re going to give you some fun ideas on how to decorate for autumn! These simple updates are inexpensive and require minimal planning or time, but you’ll be pleasantly surprised with the giant impact they make.

A fall themed living room featuring cozy throw blankets and stepping tea with leaves on a coffee table

The Living Room

To Swap: Now is the perfect time to switch out throw pillows and blankets. Goodbye to the lightweight, bright textures and patterns found in summer and hello to the heavier, darker ones of winter. Tartan, wool, and deep jewel tones such as emerald green, navy, and maroons are perfect for this time of year. If you need to pick some new pillow covers up, Pottery Barn is a great spot, located on the Upper West Side very close to Hawthorn Park.

To Add: Scentes! Pumpkin and pine aromas are great for this time of year. Find your favorite candle scent in a diffuser, which is much safer for your apartment. There are also great faux fur throws that can spruce up your living room couch this fall- find some great options at West Elm or Pottery Barn. Switch up your floral arrangements to feature dried florals with deeper richer hues of orange, red and browns!

Wooden tray of coffee and candles on bed. White bedding sheets with striped blanket and pillow. Breakfast in bed.

The Master Bedroom

To Swap: Switch out the linen sheets for a cozy set of flannel ones.

To Add: It is all about making your bedroom your autumn oasis! Make it as cozy as possible! Try slippers tucked under the bed, you’ll be so pleased the first chilly morning when you step your feet out of bed, only to realize a pair of fury warm slippers await! Pull out your favorite fall and winter books to read and leave them on your nightstand! Line up your Netflix wishlist with fall favorites like Gilmore Girls!

A child reading a book featuring a fox sitting on the floor

The Children’s Bedroom

To Swap: Their book collection! Take a few minutes (or afternoon–depending on how complex their book collection is!) and change out any seasonal books that have found their way into your children’s library in the last few months: books that talk about spring, summer, days at the beach, fireworks, or vacations, and swap them for books on apple picking, going back to school, Halloween, and the first snowfall.

To Add: Children love anything with a touch of whimsy, so take this time to add a bit of magic to their room! Perhaps a string of pumpkin twinkle lights over their bed, a ghost night light next to their door, or a new calendar on their desk–filled in with dates they can look forward to for the upcoming season.

Cinnamon sticks and seasoning in trays

The Kitchen

Now is a great time to update your spice cabinet for the changing season. Consider adding spices that will warm you from the inside out, such as cinnamon, nutmeg, paprika, turmeric, and ginger. Make sure you have plenty of cold weather drinks on hand, too, such as hot chocolate, tea, and your favorite local brand of coffee. You can grab a few bags of NYC’s own Gotham Dark Roast the next time you’re at Irving Farm, which is roasted in New York State and has cafe locations on the Upper East Side, the Westside, Midtown East,  and Downtown. Grab your favorite fall tea and drink selection, my personal favorite is chai!

The Andover – Upper East Side Luxury Apartments

Located in the quaint village of Gracie Point, The Andover boasts spacious apartments and first-class amenities. With units specifically designed for small and growing families in mind, browse available apartments today!

The Bathroom

To Swap: Those lightweight waffle robes can get tucked away until the next warm season, and instead bring out the thick, floor length cotton robes that will keep your warm on even the coldest of days. Same goes for switching out the towels–you’ll want all the layered warmth you can get!

To Add: A simple thing such as switching the scent of your soap for the upcoming season will make a huge difference! Soaps in scents such as apple, pumpkin, or maple will give you a whiff of autumn every time you wash your hands, and can be picked up at stores such as Bath and Body Works or even your corner Duane Reade.

A diffuser and succulent plant in a bedroom

Living in NYC, we all know how chaotic our lives are, especially now! Your apartment can be your sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of New York City. This January, make an effort to create the perfect space for you! There are some great tricks and tips to be able to achieve the ultimate zen ambience in your home! Read below to see what we suggest to ensure you come home to your Glenwood apartment and feel that you have a space that is calming and stress free.

A bushel of dried lavender

Scent

Scent is very important for creating a relaxing environment. Specific fragrances such as lavender, vanilla, and sandalwood have all been proven to promote calming effects in your nervous system when inhaled. After a long day of work or kids, who doesn’t want to be greeted by a nice aroma! Place an aromatic diffuser wherever you unwind at home. A diffuser is a great way to avoid the hazards that come with using a candle—additionally, many candle brands have diffusers so if you have a scent you love, make sure to check if it comes as a diffuser too. You can also purchase essential oils and place a few drops in your humidifier, which will give your entire apartment or room a wonderful fragrance. You can even check out some places like Olfactory NYC, close to Glenwood’s downtown buildings, where you can customize your own scent to create calming fragrances that come in body wash and sprays.

A table with a laptop, iPhone, computer, headphones and coffee

Electronic Free Bedroom

Electronics have become an integral part of everyday life. But, when you are home it is nice to have one space that is designated for electronic free relaxation—that’s right, no tv, computer, or cell phone! Seems extreme, but it is worth a try! You might end up enjoying it. If you choose your bedroom to be this electronic free zone, you may find an extra perk!  While you will feel relaxed in any room you choose from not being constantly bombarded by texts, news updates, or television shows, if you implement this in your bedroom you likely will get a better nights rest! The blue light that emanates from your computer and phone screens makes it very difficult to fall asleep at night. Having your bedroom be a place of rest and calmness is sure to help unplugging from a busy work day.

Paint and fabric color swatches

Interior Decor Color Schemes

How you decorate your apartment is a very personal decision! Certain color schemes can promote a soothing, relaxing environment. Stick with neutrals, grey, blue, white, creams for the large areas such as your bedroom and living room to help achieve a tranquil space. Your couches, rugs, and curtains in neutral tones can all help promote a calm space. Your apartment doesn’t need to be all neutral tones though, be sure to add those fun pops of color for your accent pieces like a throw blanket, a coffee table book, pillow or vase! You can even switch up your accent colors by seasons! For summer bright colors like orange or turquoise are great while in winter maybe a black or emerald green!

Organization

Returning home, it is always nice to be met by a tidy apartment! But, we all know that is not an easy task. If you create your own organizational system for your home, it is a lot easier to keep everything in order. Here are some of our tips for creating at home ease with organizing! In your closet or living room, using storage boxes that can come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, and patterns is a great way to start making sure your shelves and closet spaces are tidy! You can tuck away your books, kids toys, and items like gloves or hats! The Container Store located on Lexington Avenue between 58th and 59th and Rainbow located at 1st Avenue between 75th and 76th Street, which is very convenient for many of the Upper East Side Glenwood buildings like The Pavilion, The Somerset, The Lucerne,  and The Stratford, are great places to find organizational items for your home! For the kitchen, using clear containers for snacks, cereal, sugar, baking powder and more is a great way to see what you have and what you need to restock! You can buy fun labels to personalize them too.

Whether or not you are a fan of winter, there is always something magical about a snow day. If you have kids, you know they are hoping for a snow day from school, which means superstitions like sleeping with their pajamas on inside out or with a spoon under their pillow just as you may have done as a child! If you are an adult, being snowed in and having to work from home can be a nice treat! Yes, winter storms come with a lot of necessary maintenance, but they can also become a fun or relaxing day! Below are our suggestions on how to make the most out of your snow day in your Glenwood apartment.

Pick Out The Perfect Snow Storm Movie

A couple on the couch with the tv remote watching tv

If you are stuck inside due to a snow storm, curling up on the couch with a hot chocolate or hot tea does sound rather appealing! It is a great time to catch up on that movie you have been dying to see or finish that new series you have been trying to find a time to watch! If you have younger children, watching movies with a snow theme is always fun. Some movies that will keep them entertained and excited about the snow are films like Frozen, Happy Feet, or The Chronicles of Narnia! These movies are fun for the whole family to watch together! If you are looking for a more serious weather related movie you can watch The Day After Tomorrow or Eight Below! You can check out a compiled list of snow themed movies by clicking here!

The Barclay – Luxury East Side Apartments Now Available

The Barclay offers great amenities for the whole family, including a sun deck, fitness center, children's playroom, laundry facility, and bicycle storage services. Let The Barclay suit your lifestyle - book a tour here.

Use Your Building’s Amenity Spaces

If a snow storm lasts more than a day, you may find yourself having a case of cabin fever—especially if you have your kids home from school! This is a perfect opportunity to make use of your uptown or downtown Glenwood building’s amenity spaces. If you start to feel restless, check if your building has a gym. Even if your gym is something you don’t visit often, this may be a good time to stretch out your legs on the treadmill! If you have younger children at home, you may have a Glenwood playroom in your west side or east side apartment that would be a great outlet for your children to expend their pent up energy! Some Glenwood buildings even have pools—what a fun thing to do with your family during a snow day, go for a dip!

Stock Up On Food and Snacks

Hot chocolate and gingerbread cookies on a light wood table with pink decor accents

If you know a snow day is approaching, it is smart to stock up on some items like food and water! Aside from the essential food items, it is fun to do something a little special for yourself or your family during snow days. If you are planning on having a movie day or hot coco party with your kids, stop at the store before the storm hits to grab things like popcorn, hot chocolate mix, marshmallows and whatever other special snow storm treats are your favorite! Making s’mores in the microwave is always a cute and fun idea too!

Tip!

Brown snow boots stepping in snow

If you go out during the storm, your shoes will most likely have salt from the sidewalks on them which can affect your apartment floors! Using an indoor rubber shoe mat for your winter boots is a great help to avoid this problem! A mat is easy to store with items like your holiday decorations so it’s ready to be brought out in time for the seasonal winter storm!

In New York City, you can find several picnic tables and luscious green lawns to enjoy a meal at. Whether you hit up Central Park or opt for a city skyline view from Queens, you're bound to have a good time!

Picnic basket and blanket resting on grass with food

July is the perfect time to picnic in NYC! Take “eating out” to a whole new level by taking your food “to-go” in style. Grab a blanket and a basket, we’re going to find the best picnic spots in all of Manhattan!

For A Work Week Lunch Picnic: Bryant Park

Bryant Park lunch tables with people sitting enjoying a sunny day

For those of you working in Midtown Manhattan, consider taking advantage of the great oasis you have at your fingertips: Bryant Park. Located at 42nd Street and 6th Avenue, not only is it likely right downstairs or down the street from your office, but it’s ideal for a “professional picnic” because of all the chairs and tables it offers! Unlike most other spots in NYC where you will have to bring your own blanket, there’ss never a shortage of places to sit in Bryant Park, making it ideal for picnicking while in your work clothes. And of course if you are a Midtown East Glenwood resident, such as at Paramount Tower, you can picnic here anytime!

In addition to picnicking, you can take advantage of Monday night films in the park every week during the summer, taking your little New Yorkers on rides on the carousel, or participating in one of the countless free activities hosted by the park on a regular basis, such as live music, book club discussions, and juggling lessons.

For A Picnic With A View Of The Manhattan Skyline: Gantry Plaza State Park

If you’re looking for a picnic with a view, search no further than Gantry Plaza State Park. Located across the East River in Long Island City, Queens, this is an ideal spot for Manhattanites because of the ease to get to: you can jump on the water taxi from Midtown and be there in a matter of minutes (which is an adventure in and of itself)!

Along with the best view of NYC, you’ll also have access to modern and beautiful playground equipment, plenty of riverwalk area to stroll for a sunset walk, and food trucks parked along the side of the park for scoring dessert. You can practically see The Bamford from where you’ll be picnicking!

For A Picnic With Lots Of Room To Throw A Ball Afterwards: Central Park

Central Park lawn with people picnicking, playing, and tanning

Central Park is ripe for picnicking just about anywhere, but one of our favorite spots is on the Upper East Side at 79th and 5th Avenue. There’s a sidewalk you can enter the park in there, and plenty of room to lay down a blanket without worrying about hearing other people’s conversations (a luxury in New York!) There are spots with trees providing shade, as well as plenty of sunlit areas, depending on your preference. We love this area because it’s perfect for a game of pickup football or frisbee afterwards, too! Residents living at The Marlowe will adore its location.

After you eat and play, consider heading to one of the UES’s iconic museums, also located in the neighborhood, such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art or The Frick. And if you’re a card carrier of a New York Public Library Card, you can now get free passes to these museums, too. What a perfect NYC day!

Wave Hill Public Gardens

If you are a resident of Briar Hill, there is an exceptionally beautiful place for you to picnic! Try Wave Hill in Riverdale! The 28 acre estate is full of views overlooking the Hudson River and gardens you won’t want to miss! The main house dates back to 1843 and is on the National Register of Historical Places. If you were a history buff, this home was both lived in by Teddy Roosevelt and Mark Twain!

Governors Island

Daisys on a grassy field

Glenwood downtown residents can easily hop on a ferry to Governors Island to find vast grassy havens to spend the afternoon picnicking in! Not only is it beautiful, but there are so many great events going on at Governors Island to check out! They have things for the entire family ranching from dance and musical performances to STEM kids programs running through August 4th! Picnic Tips

Picnic box on top of a picnic red plaid blanket in grass

Don’t let the stress of throwing a picnic together deter you from doing it…they really can be so simple! Whether you head to your local market to pick up pre-made dishes, the farmer’s market for in-season tomatoes, a loaf of bread, and fresh goat cheese to put together sandwiches on the spot, or even pick up take out from your favorite restaurant, these are all great alternatives to spending the morning in the kitchen prepping!

In addition to food and drink, make sure to pack the following to maximize your picnic success:

–a blanket to sit on

–cups

–any silverware needed

–plenty of paper towels

–a trash bag to use afterwards to clean everything up in

–a wine opener (if needed)
