The Green

The front lawn called The Green, designed by Mimi Lein, will debut on May 10th as part of the Restart Stages Initiative. Lien stated, “I wanted to make a place where you could lie on a grassy slope and read a book all afternoon. Get a coffee and sit in the sun. Bring your babies and frolic in the grass. Have a picnic lunch with co-workers. I hope that this curved grass surface will feel like an embrace and an expanse at the same time, and will reimagine the Plaza as a site of social infrastructure, like a town green – a place to gather, a common ground.”

Event Highlights

Events at Lincoln Center start between 6pm and 7:30pm during the weeknights and end no later than 10pm, which make them perfect for heading to after a day at the office.

But there are also opportunities to enjoy the music on weekends! For parents with little ones, you’ll be particularly interested in the Out of Doors Family Day, which happens this season on Saturday, July 28th. Kicking off at 11am, kids and adults of all ages and abilities will be able to dance with the Mark Morris Dance Group. Then, at 12pm move on to music with a performance by the Marching Cobras, a high energy 60-member drumline and dance team. Capping off at 1pm, enjoy Soul Science Lab, which mixes dancing and singing with a blend of hip-hop, jazz, funk, soul, and Afrobeat rhythms.

Also not to miss is Heritage Sunday, happening Sunday, August 5th at 1pm. It is the 50th birthday celebration of the Center for Traditional Music and Dance, so in honor of the day the lineup will be filled with an eclectic range of artists, reflecting the diversity of New York City’s neighborhoods. The festivities end with a bang with a DJ led dance party at 5pm.

Before You Go

To make the most out of your Lincoln Center Out of Doors experience, here’s a few key things to keep in mind.

–There will be a bag check before entering the venue, so it’s best to pack light.

–The events are taking place in the peak of NYC summertime without much coverage from trees, so don’t forget to pack your SPF, a hat to keep out the sun, and hydrate with plenty of water.

–If you’d like to pop by to hear just a little bit of the music, but don’t have the time or inclination to wait in line and get through security, it’s good to know that since it’s an open air concert space you can still appreciate the music and performances from the outskirts. If you live locally, this is a great way to get a taste of many different performances before heading home for the evening.

A recreation of the Sesame Street stoop at Lincoln Center's New York Public Library

Full disclosure: I was one of the first generations of kids to fall in love with Cookie Monster. And Ernie, who has so often made me laugh out loud, for decades now. Bert maybe a little less, but still, even as a child I admired his commitment to his nerdy passions, like paper clips and pigeons. And too-cool-for-school Oscar. And then when I grew up and had kids of my own and watched it with them–call it the Elmo years–how great was it to hear them laugh and sing along to some of the same jokes and songs that I remember? So great.

Anyway, the point is that Sesame Street is one those rare cultural touchstones that can function as both heartwarming nostalgia and fresh contemporary entertainment. That it actively educates at the same time is nothing short of a miracle. Which is why it's hard to imagine anyone, of any age, not enjoying the terrific little Sesame Street 45th-anniversary exhibition at Lincoln Center New York Public Library For the Performing Arts, "Somebody Come and Play."

Sesame Street's "Somebody Come Out and Play"

First, for the toddler set, Sesame Street's "Somebody Come Out and Play" has actual-size (replicas? originals?) of pretty much every muppet a kid (and grown-up) would want to see, from all of the guys I mentioned above to The Count, Big Bird, Grover, Snuffleupagus, Zoe, Hoots the Owl, and a pair of Honkers with whom you can take your portrait via one of the cool "photo-booth" set-ups and get it emailed to you instantly. The fact that you can't touch the monsters (for obvious wear-and-tear reasons) seemed to not at all diminish the delight among any of the two-years I saw at the show. There are also a couple of dozen classic clips and animated songs on various videos screens scattered throughout. And there's an creativity/activity center, with supplies for drawing and chalking and some table games. If you live nearby (as many Glenwood residents do) you might find yourself taking your child here once a week.

Free Fun For The Whole Family

But at its core, the NYPL Sesame Street celebration is a real treat for adults, offering a fascinating, behind-the-scenes look at how the show "works", both at its inception and today. There are annotated scripts, storyboards, blueprints, animation cels, amazing old photographs (could we all have ever really been that young?), the architectural model used when they redesigned the set in the early 1990s, and a detailed look at how the Sesame Street crew–writers, directors, actors, puppeteers–take a broad educational concept and transform into something specific and lasting on the screen. Or, you know, you can also just take selfies with Cookie, or sit on the stoop next to animatronic Oscar.

The lovable and colorful Cookie Monster is at Lincoln Center's New York Public Library too!

Can You Tell Me How To Get To Lincoln Center's New York Public Library of the Performing Arts

The Sesame Street "Somebody Come Out and Play" exhibition will be at Lincoln Center's New York Public Library of the Performing Arts through January 31. Admission is free. The library is located in the northwest corner of the Lincoln Center campus, tucked away next to the Vivian Beaumont Theater. The exhibition is open Monday through Saturday, starting at 12:00 noon each day and closing at 8:00 p.m. on Monday and Thursday, and at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. For more information  and fun events follow the New York Public Library of the Performing Arts on twitter.

If the vitality of a city can be measured, even to a small degree, by the prevalence and energy of its public art, then New York is in fine shape indeed. From the ongoing exhibitions in City Hall Park to the regular installations along Broadway and Park Avenue to the consistently engaging shows up and down the High Line, over the past decade or so great works of public art have left the usual corporate-plaza spaces far behind, offering ample opportunities for surprise and delight as we go about our day. Two terrific new installations in Manhattan got me thinking about all of this again recently: three huge sculptures by Tony Cragg that have taken up residence in Madison Square Park through February; and the addictive, high-def Solar Reserve by John Gerrard, plopped down front and center on the Lincoln Center's main plaza.

Tony Cragg's Walks of Life at Madison Square Park

Tony Cragg's Walks of Life at Madison Square Park

Ever since it's inception in 2004, the Mad. Sq. Arts program, which commissions installations from contemporary artists two or three times a year, has helped transform this historic public space into one of the city's most popular parks. And with his trio of sculptures–Caldera on the southern gravel plaza near Shake Shack, Points of View on the main lawn, Mixed Feelings in the park's northwest corner–British artist Tony Cragg joins a long line of acclaimed artists who have managed to command our attention with monumental, dynamic pieces even while completely integrating their work into the space. On their first day, they look right art home. And, crucially in this era of selfies and Instagram, all are welcoming and interactive in that photo-op way, especially Caldera, into which you can climb and pose in any number of ways. Tony Cragg's Walks of Life installation will be on view in Madison Square Park through February 8th.

John Gerrard's Solar Reserve at Lincoln Center

The Lincoln Center campus is no stranger to hosting massive works of art–Henry Moore's Reclining Figure in the reflecting pool; Alexander Calder's Le Guichet by the Vivienne Beaumont Theater; JR's fantastic photographs of the New York City Ballet last winter–but I can't ever remember a piece like John Gerrard's Solar Reserve dominating the space in quite this way. Set down at the top of the main entrance to the plaza, and even blocking the iconic (though semi-newly renovated) fountain, Solar Reserve is basically an enormous LED wall/screen that shows Gerrard's computer-simulated, 365-day-long "movie" of a solar power plant in Tonopah, Nevada. The actual plant on which the work is based, known as a solar thermal power tower, is comprised of 10,000 mirrors that bounce sunlight into a pool of molten salts, creating a thermal battery that generates electricity. But you don't have to know any of that to be mesmerized by the piece, which is particularly striking at night. John Gerrard's Solar Reserve will be on display through December 1st.

Crowds of dancing people enjoy the music and culture of Midsummer Night Swing at Lincoln Center

Now in its 26th year (it was supposed to be a one-time celebration, but everybody loved it so much they've just kept it going), Lincoln Center's hugely popular Midsummer Night Swing started up again this week, as thousands of dancers filled Damrosch Park for a glorious night of swinging and singing and generally having a blast. Even if you missed the classic swing opener on Tuesday with Cecile McLorin Dalvant, there's still plenty of time, as the party runs through Saturday July 12.

An Upper West Side Tradition

Midsummer Night Swing 2014 in Lincoln Center works pretty much the same as in year's past. Almost every night between now and July 12, a different band comes to Damrosch Park, and, along with a DJ during breaks, inspires a packed dance floor of happy, sweaty folks to do the hustle, or samba, or merengue, or jump blues, or tango, or classic swing. A $17 ticket gets you onto the actual floor, which is ideal, especially if you want to be able to see the band, but hundreds of other people always just show up to dance and listen from the sidelines. Seriously: the whole park is one big party. And I talked to several folks who arrived solo, and said that they never have any trouble finding partners.

Thousands of people come together at the Lincoln Center for their annual dance party, Midsummer Night Swing.

Dance the Night Away!

You can't really go wrong here: all the bands are first-rate, so it's really more a matter of personal dance preference. Plenty of attendees buy four- or six-night passes, or even season passes (which gets you access to the VIP tent as well as the dance floor). Basically, this is a really fun time, a festival that's become a genuine Upper West Side tradition. One thing, though, is they're making a big deal of the fact that Hill Country's renowned BBQ is selling in the park, which is indeed excellent, but this is a severely truncated, overpriced version here in Damrosch. Not terrible in a pinch, but nothing to get excited about.

Here at Glenwood we just added an exciting new addition to our family of luxury rental buildings: the newly completed 54-story Hawthorn Park, right next to the beautiful Lincoln Center campus. While Lincoln Center remains the neighborhood’s geographic and cultural anchor (especially after the hugely successful redesign finished a few years ago, it’s looking and functioning better than ever), the whole Lincoln Square community has undergone an enormous transformation in the past decade or so, making this part of town both a vibrant destination for a night out as well as a fun, friendly, family-orientated place to live.

Dining Out in Lincoln Square

One aspect of Lincoln Square’s new appeal is the explosion of first-rate restaurants that have opened in the area. Renowned restauranteur Daniel Boluod has taken over much of the block on Broadway right across from Lincoln Center, with:

  • The Mediterranean-influenced Boulud Sud,
  • The meaty Bar Boulud,
  • The casual counter-service spot Epicerie Boulud.

Another newcomer on that block is The Smith, which serves good drinks, a solid menu, and is packed every night with both locals and the pre-/post-performance crowd. Of course, there are some of the best restaurants in New York City–in the world, even–just a few blocks south, including Per Se and Masa at the Time Warner Center, and Jean Georges in the Trump building on Columbus Circle. Also handy for Lincoln Square residents is the huge Whole Foods in the Time Warner Center’s lower level.

Residents Enjoy Shopping, Recreation, and Leisure

Hawthorn Park’s new home is not just about eating and culture. Shopping on Broadway and Columbus Avenue offers residents lots of pretty boutiques, fun shops, and convenient chain stores. For recreation and leisure, some of the nicest parts of Central Park, including Sheep Meadow, the Heckscher Ballfields, Bethesda Fountain and the Mall are all right there. If you head a couple of blocks west instead of east you’re in Riverside Park, which is now part of the westside’s vast, interconnected waterfront of esplanades, bike paths, playgrounds, dog runs, walking piers, and grassy lawns that extends up to the George Washington Bridge and down to Battery Park City. Plus, Lincoln Square is as centrally located as you can get, with easy access to Midtown, the East side, Downtown and up.

About a year and a half ago, in February of 2011, Christian Marclay's spellbinding, 24-hour movie The Clock played to packed houses at the Paula Cooper Gallery, day after day and, on weekends, all through the night. Even at two in the morning, during one of the most relentlessly bitter winters in memory, hours-long lines ran down the otherwise-deserted West Chelsea sidewalk. We were lucky (and relentless) enough to see about a third of The Clock (the part from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m, and then, on another day, from 7:00 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.), and, really, it was one of our favorite artworks/movies/cultural events of all time. And now Christian Marclay's The Clock returns to NYC, starting next Friday, July 13, right near The Regent and Grand Tier, two of Glenwood's Westside rental buildings, at Lincoln Center.

Clock on top of building from Christian Marclay's The Clock movie at the Lincoln Center.

First, a refresher on what Christian Marclay's The Clock is all about. Basically, Marclay and his team have assembled literally thousand of clips from literally thousands of movies, of all different genres and eras, from the old silents to recent releases, each moment from each movie featuring someone or something telling the time. Often it's a shot of a watch or a clock, either part of the action or in the background, but there are plenty of creative surprises as well, such as characters speaking the time (either exactly or approximately, like: "It's already after 8:00") or, our favorite, when a clock would say the incorrect time, but then someone would come and move the hands and fix it, PHEW. And it's important that it's the right time because the time in The Clock coincides with the time in the real world, your world, as you're sitting there watching. Very, very cool. It's also wonderfully, often amusingly thematically cohesive from scene to scene, and the editing of the The Clock's score is a monumental achievement in itself.

Alarm clock on night stand from the 24 hr movie by Christian Marclay at the Lincoln Center.

At Paula Cooper they set up huge, comfy couches, lined the gallery with thick curtains, and so, once you got to your seat, it was easy to lose yourself in Marclay's creation. At Lincoln Center, The Clock will be shown within the David Rubenstein Atrium, which, frankly, doesn't at all look like a pleasant place to sit and watch a movie for hours (see below), but they're going to completely transform the place, apparently, adding velvet curtains to block out light and sound, and putting in those same (or similar?) great couches, enough to seat 90 people at a time, which might sound like a lot, but totally isn't. Given the warm weather and the installation's central location, you should expect long waits… but if you can do it, Christian Marclay's The Clock film is absolutely worth it.

Christian Marclay: The Clock at Lincoln Center details

Christian Marclay: The Clock will be showing between July 13 and August 1 at a specially built theater within Lincoln Center's David Rubenstein Atrium on Broadway between 62nd and 63rd Streets. The hours are Tuesday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. (Glenwood residents: take a morning off and get there early!) to 10:00 p.m., and continuously, all through the day and night, from Friday at 8:00 a.m. through Sunday at 10:00 p.m. Closed Mondays. Admission is free. For more information about Christian Marclay's The Clock, please see the Lincoln Center Festival website here

Inside the Indie Food and Wine restaurant at Lincoln Center, Manhattan.

We don't usually post bad reviews of restaurants in this space because, really, what's the point? Unless it's a heavily-hyped place that fails, and fails badly, to deliver on its promise (and/or premise), and so deserves a warning before you go dropping a pile of your hard-earned dollars on a bad meal, it's so much more useful and fun to tell you about good places to eat, of which there are literally hundreds all over this beautiful city of ours. BUT, we're going to make an exception for Indie Food and Wine, a handsome, comfortable, casual Lincoln Center restaurant which opened last fall, right off the lobby of the nice new(ish) movie theater on 65th Street (the Elinor Bunin Monroe Film Center, to be precise) and, for reasons we can''t understand, sells terrible food.

Jason Denton Makes an Attempt with Indie Food and Wine

Indie Food and Wine is a Jason Denton project, a man who knows more than a thing or two about serving tasty, satisfying meals to large numbers of people, at his 'ino empire, which includes 'inoteca on the Lower East Side, and Corsino in the West Village, two reliable favorites. The menu at Indie Food and Wine is appealing, a mixture of salads, sandwiches, and entree-ish "cafe plates"; the prices reasonable, the service friendly, the design interesting, and the location is ideal for anything you might be doing at Lincoln Center. It could even be a solid neighborhood place for Upper West Side locals, including Glenwood's Grand Tier and residents at The Regent. All of which is why it's so genuinely sad, so utterly baffling, why they would serve you such uniformly awful stuff.

This Promising Lincoln Center Restaurant Falls Short of Upper West Side Standards

We've eaten at Indie Food and Wine four times since it opened, always hoping that they've gotten their act together, rooting for the kitchen to figure it out because, really, it has so much promise. But each meal has, if anything, been progressively worse. Just last week, for example, we stopped in before seeing (the by the way very good) Safety Not Guaranteed, and walked out hungry because the food was, basically, inedible. Take the roast beef sandwich (please!). This was two thickly-cut, gray slabs of bone-dry meat and a few limp pieces of watercress on a baguette. The menu had promised cucumber, and "jus" (not that this cut could have even delivered on that), and even pickled-horseradish creme fraiche, and we received none of it. Just the saddest sandwich you've ever seen. For $12.

Dear everyone at Indie Food and Wine: there is no way you would buy this roast beef, to bring home and serve to your family, if you saw it a deli, so why are you giving it to customers? Where's the love, people? And we couldn't even choke down the "special" side of bean-and-tomato salad because it was so salty (it was also refrigerator cold, as are all the sides and salads we've ever had here, which is always a bad idea, taste-wise). Again, did anyone taste this before it was served? And, if so, did you actually expect anyone to eat it? Who's paying attention here? When we complained (which we almost never do, but this was ridiculous), the manager was gracious and professional, and refused to let us pay for our (mostly uneaten) meal, but that's not what we want, to be notcharged for bad food. We want Indie Food and Wine to be at least decent and, in our dreams, actually good. Please.

Bar seating at the Boulud Sud

When Daniel Boulud moved into the neighborhood, and over the past couple of years has transformed that key stretch of Broadway, right across from Lincoln Center's main plaza, into something like Boulud Boulevard, with three different restaurants wrapping around 64th Street: the charcuterie-centric Bar Boulud, the casual cafe Epicerie Boulud, and his newish Mediterranee delight, Boulud Sud. Time was, and not so long ago, it was counter-intuitively difficult to get a decent meal right around Lincoln Center. Yes, you could spend a fortune for some first-rate Chinese at Shun Lee, or grab an ok burger at O'Neal's (Balloon), but for the most part it was mediocre-to-worse food at prices that pained.

Mediterranean-inspired flavors from the Boulud Sud menu

We've already had great meals at Bar Boulud (the Degustation de Charcuterie sampler is one of our favorite snacks on the Upper West Side), but last week we finally made it to Boulud Sud, which opened early this summer to critical acclaim and much neighborhood swooning over Boulud's and Executive Chef Aaron Chambers' ability coax such wonderfully bright and clean Mediterranean-inspired flavors from everything that came out of the kitchen. We sat at the bar–the place was booked solid–and sampled a few dishes from around the Boulud Sud menu, and hit total winners each time.

The Boulud Sud dual Tabouleh bowls

For example, the Boulud Sud Charred Squid: buttery soft, redolent with the sea, stuffed with spicy chorizo, accompanied by an intense tapenade. Perfect. The Boulud Sud duel Tabouleh bowls were also excellent, both the "Classic Bulger" concoction as well as the "Zaatar Cauliflower" variety. Such simple-looking dishes; such wonderful explosions of flavor. And our Rabbit Porchetta might have been the best of all, a thick circle, brilliantly balanced between the bunny meat, the asparagus, the fat, the basil, that was dense enough to be almost a meal.

Seating and service at Boulud Sud

The room at Boulud Sud is lovely, punctuated by several Vic Muniz pieces, but walk-ins (or, at least, walk-ins like us) can be treated with something less than a warm welcome. In fact, there was a certain chilliness to the proceedings, and Boulud Sud is not an inexpensive restaurant, and the haughtiness made us less excited about returning. Where we are excited about returning–and, in fact, have stopped by many times since  it opened last spring–is Chef Daniel Boulud's quick-bite paradise, the bright and lively Epicerie Boulud. With its wide-open frontage, outdoor cafe tables, indoor stand-up counters, beverages of all description, and a huge range of snacks and treats both sweet and savory, Epicerie Boulud is the type of place that every neighborhood needs.

The oyster bar at Epicerie Boulud, NYC

There are many ways to enjoy Epicerie Boulud. There's a long counter filled with Chef Daniel Boulud's chacuterie, to eat right there or bring home to share, as well as a number of carefully selected cheeses via the great Saxelby Cheesemongers. There's also a full-blown patisserie here at Epicerie Boulud, with all the expected goodies–croissants and fancy cakes and eclairs and tarts and such–as well some terrific macaroons (the best is the chocolate) and, somewhat more rare, spectacularly rich and gooey squares of pate de fruit.

Epicerie Boulud also features a lovely little marble-topped bar where you can sip a beer or some wine and munch on several hot lunch-y items such as a Spicy Merguez Sandwich, a Banh Mi, and the excellent DBGB Dog with sauteed onion mustard and 299 relish. Then in the evening, the Epicerie Boulud folks break out a Jamon Iberico and crates of oysters arrive for your casual slurping pleasure. Epicerie Boulud also sells (very freshly) pre-made sandwiches and salads and soups, ouefs for breakfast, AND there's a gelato stand as well, which we can assure you sells scoops as creamy and full-flavored as you'd except from a Daniel Boulud production. Bon appetite indeed. Thanks, Chef.
