Pile of moving boxes and household stuff in living room

Sometimes circumstances necessitate a fast move that can take you out of your comfort zone. There are a number of things you can do to prepare for a quick getaway. It’s a good time to pare down, and get items out of your life that you no longer need to carry from place to place. Just because time is of the essence, does not mean that the move has to be done in a haphazard way. Everything should be well labeled so that you have a system in place to ensure the packing and unpacking goes relatively easily. Professional help can be lined up, and there are always those friends that you can count on. Below, we’ve rounded up our top tips for moving on short notice.

Step #1: Make Reservations

Man holding clipboard on blurred boxes background

Assuming you have the move-in date set for your new place, don’t waste a second making reservations for your move. Whether this comes in the form of hiring movers to do the whole thing, renting a U-Haul to do it yourself, or calling in a favor from a friend with a truck, figure out which method best suits your life circumstances and secure the date now. Especially during the summer, you’ll have a lot of people who are also in the same camp as you, and the last thing you want to find out if you wait until the last minute is that there’ss no availability. This will only leave you scrambling for another option, but also paying much higher than you would have earlier in the process. (However, don’t let that summer is a busy time deter you from moving. Here’s 5 reasons to move during the summer!)

Step #2: Write A List Of The Major Things To Keep, Sell, Or Donate

Person sorting through boxes, keep, donate, discard

Obviously, you’re in a time crunch here so we’re not talking about going through your closet item by item and holding them up to see what sparks joy. Instead, we’re talking more big-ticket items, such as furniture, rugs, and appliances. Ask yourself questions such as:

–Am I downsizing of upsizing?

–Will the California King bed fit into my new bedroom?

–Does my new apartment come fully furnished with all major appliances, or will I be expected to get my own (such is the case sometimes for apartments in smaller buildings with washer/dryer hookups.)

Next, make a list of all the big pieces that make the cut, as well as ones that you will have no need for in your next home. For example, if you’re moving into a NYC apartment with less living room space than your current home in the suburbs, there’ss a good chance the wrap-around sofa sectional won’t be the best use of space. Figure out if you want to donate it to a charity that accepts used furniture (such as the Salvation Army or Housing Works), or if it’s in good enough condition to take the time to photograph it, post it on a site such as Craigslist or LetGo, and coordinate details to sell it.

Step #3: Stock Up With Packing Gear

Now that you have all the details of the move squared away and are left with only the items which will come with you on your move, it’s time to load up on packing gear. Boxes can be gathered from local stores for free, such as your local wine shop, but again, if you’re in a real rush the most time effective thing to do is to use a store such as The Container Store to secure all your boxes, bubble wrap, containers, tape, and markers. You can purchase the items right from their website and have them deliver it straight to your NYC home for same day delivery, how easy is that?! Glenwood residents can all benefit from this, whether you’re moving from The Bristol in Midtown East or The Encore on the Westside.

Step #4: Pack With A Method

Finally, the day has come to pack! Here’s a little tip though: it takes just as much time to pack in a messy rush as it does an organized one. So, rather than throwing items haphazardly into boxes, take the time to put a method into place. Packing room by room and clearly labeling each box is one easy way to do this. Trust us, your future self will thank you once you get into your new home!

Step #5: Organize A Cleaning Service

Assuming you don’t have the time (or energy, at this point) to spend a solid half a day cleaning your apartment once all the boxes are gone, consider hiring a maid service to come in to do the dirty work for you. While hiring a cleaning service does cost money, it’s absolutely worth shelling out a little in order to get your security deposit back on your apartment! And while you’re at it, it could be totally worth having a cleaning service do a move-in scrub for your new home, too. Starting out on a clean slate after a stressful move is worth its weight in gold.

Winter is coming, are you ready? Today we will cover tips for preparing your apartment for winter, such as ways to make the apartment feel cozy and warm, as well as preparing indoor activities for the inevitable NYC snow day.

Cozy throw blanket, tea and book open on a couch

Bring Out The Throw Blankets!

It’s the perfect time to transition your Glenwood apartment decor, getting it cozy for the upcoming months of chilly weather. A simple way to do this is to bring your throw blankets out of storage, and drape them over your sofa and beds for a layer of extra snuggles. Whether you’re staying in for the night watching Netflix or huddling under the covers in bed with a good book, you’ll appreciate the warmth!

If you don’t have throw blankets in storage from last season, head to your local Pottery Barn or West Elm to pick up some seasonal ones. They have locations located on the Westside, quite near The Encore and Hawthorn Park.

Choose Luxury Amenities at The Encore

The Encore offers pristine apartments with the finest amenities and services. Contact us today for a showing.

Add Seasonal Scents

Fall and winter scents like cinnamon, and clove spread out on a table

There’s nothing quite like walking into an apartment that smells like baked apple pie or warm pumpkin bread. While having these items baking in the oven 24/7 is not an actual reality, you can certainly incorporate essential oils and melting wax diffusers to create the essence all season long! Head to your local fragrance store, such as Diptyque on the Upper East Side, and pick up a few of their seasonal scents. Placed strategically around your apartment, such as the kitchen, living room, bedroom, and guest bathroom, your home will be smelling like a winter sanctuary in no time.

Prepare Indoor Games

Board games spread out on a table

Indoor games are just as important for the wintertime whether you have kiddos or are in a house of adults. When the nights get dark at 5pm and the weather is snowy out, it’s nice to be prepared with inside activities.

For homes with children, consider putting together an arts and craft kit. Depending on the ages of your kids, these can include things such as play dough, finger paint, sand art, coloring books, and jewelry making supplies.

And for homes with adults, load up on timeless board games! Cult favorites include Monopoly, Scrabble, Life, Uno, and of course a deck of cards. These games are good for most all ages (sans the extremely little tots), which make them perfect for the whole family to get in on. And don’t discount the pleasure a puzzle can bring, too…having it sit out on the coffee table to be worked on little by little throughout the season is a great way to pass the time.

Load Up On Warming Foods And Snacks

The last thing you want to have to think about during a snowstorm is running to the grocery store. Prepare ahead and load up on cozy wintertime goodies, such as hot chocolate and marshmallows, ingredients for a homemade soup or stew, and buttery popcorn pouches for popping during Christmas movie marathons. For those of you who live at The Pavilion, the food shop located in-house at the shopping arcade means you don’t even have to leave the building to stock up!

Pick Up Seasonal and New Release Books

A stack of books opened on a blue background

You can call your local bookstore and purchase a book for curbside order and pick up a huge stack of books with seasonal themes of the holidays or wintertime in general. These are great to keep in your children’s rooms to read before bedtime, and to really incorporate the season into their lives.

Also, check out the New York Times review on new release books that interest you and pick those books up for yourself! You won’t be without a book on hand all season long, which makes those cold Saturday afternoons pleasurable. Cuddling up with your throw blanket, hot cocoa, pumpkin spice candle, and book as you watch the snow fall outside your window. Wintertime perfection!

A diffuser and succulent plant in a bedroom

Living in NYC, we all know how chaotic our lives are, especially now! Your apartment can be your sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of New York City. This January, make an effort to create the perfect space for you! There are some great tricks and tips to be able to achieve the ultimate zen ambience in your home! Read below to see what we suggest to ensure you come home to your Glenwood apartment and feel that you have a space that is calming and stress free.

A bushel of dried lavender

Scent

Scent is very important for creating a relaxing environment. Specific fragrances such as lavender, vanilla, and sandalwood have all been proven to promote calming effects in your nervous system when inhaled. After a long day of work or kids, who doesn’t want to be greeted by a nice aroma! Place an aromatic diffuser wherever you unwind at home. A diffuser is a great way to avoid the hazards that come with using a candle—additionally, many candle brands have diffusers so if you have a scent you love, make sure to check if it comes as a diffuser too. You can also purchase essential oils and place a few drops in your humidifier, which will give your entire apartment or room a wonderful fragrance. You can even check out some places like Olfactory NYC, close to Glenwood’s downtown buildings, where you can customize your own scent to create calming fragrances that come in body wash and sprays.

A table with a laptop, iPhone, computer, headphones and coffee

Electronic Free Bedroom

Electronics have become an integral part of everyday life. But, when you are home it is nice to have one space that is designated for electronic free relaxation—that’s right, no tv, computer, or cell phone! Seems extreme, but it is worth a try! You might end up enjoying it. If you choose your bedroom to be this electronic free zone, you may find an extra perk!  While you will feel relaxed in any room you choose from not being constantly bombarded by texts, news updates, or television shows, if you implement this in your bedroom you likely will get a better nights rest! The blue light that emanates from your computer and phone screens makes it very difficult to fall asleep at night. Having your bedroom be a place of rest and calmness is sure to help unplugging from a busy work day.

Paint and fabric color swatches

Interior Decor Color Schemes

How you decorate your apartment is a very personal decision! Certain color schemes can promote a soothing, relaxing environment. Stick with neutrals, grey, blue, white, creams for the large areas such as your bedroom and living room to help achieve a tranquil space. Your couches, rugs, and curtains in neutral tones can all help promote a calm space. Your apartment doesn’t need to be all neutral tones though, be sure to add those fun pops of color for your accent pieces like a throw blanket, a coffee table book, pillow or vase! You can even switch up your accent colors by seasons! For summer bright colors like orange or turquoise are great while in winter maybe a black or emerald green!

Organization

Returning home, it is always nice to be met by a tidy apartment! But, we all know that is not an easy task. If you create your own organizational system for your home, it is a lot easier to keep everything in order. Here are some of our tips for creating at home ease with organizing! In your closet or living room, using storage boxes that can come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, and patterns is a great way to start making sure your shelves and closet spaces are tidy! You can tuck away your books, kids toys, and items like gloves or hats! The Container Store located on Lexington Avenue between 58th and 59th and Rainbow located at 1st Avenue between 75th and 76th Street, which is very convenient for many of the Upper East Side Glenwood buildings like The Pavilion, The Somerset, The Lucerne,  and The Stratford, are great places to find organizational items for your home! For the kitchen, using clear containers for snacks, cereal, sugar, baking powder and more is a great way to see what you have and what you need to restock! You can buy fun labels to personalize them too.

Luxury Pools In NYC https://www.glenwoodnyc.com/manhattan-living/luxury-pools-in-nyc/ Fri, 06 Jul 2018 10:00:30 +0000 http://glenwoodstage.wpengine.com/?p=19674 July brings beautiful weather, but sometimes it can be too hot to handle! Cool off at some of the most beautiful luxury pools New York City has to offer.

While access to many of NYC’s luxury hotel pools require a stay at the property, this isn’t exactly practical for residents who live in the city. We’ve done our research and found ways for you to escape the summer heat and indulge in the most exquisite, private, and beautiful pools Manhattan has to offer, that are actually available to the public. Located all around New York City and conveniently close to several of our Glenwood properties, these pools provide an opportunity to enjoy summer in the city like nothing else.

Jimmy at the James

The Jimmy at the James pool is one you’ll want to take special note of, as it’s a luxury rooftop pool that (get this) does not charge a cover fee. Located 18 stories above street level, the pool is truly a hidden oasis. During the week it’s open strictly to hotel guests (but that’s okay, because you’re probably at work anyway), but get ready to join the fun weekends from Memorial Day to Labor Day starting at 3pm for their JIMMY Summer Pool Parties. Don’t let the phrase “pool party” fool you, however. These parties are aimed at the adult crowd, so it’s best to leave the kiddos at home.

Along with plenty of sun and SPF, you can soak in the views and mocktails from their restaurant. There’s plenty of teak decking, chaise lounges for relaxing, and an outdoor shower for rinsing off. Reservations are recommended. Located in Soho, the Jimmy at the James is very convenient for Downtown residents.

Park Hyatt New York

While you technically have to book a treatment in order to have access to the stunning pool at the Park Hyatt, we won’t be too upset about being forced to get a massage. You can book something as short as a 30 minute massage ($150) and gain access to to 61 foot long glass enclosed pool and whirlpool at this Midtown luxury hotel, along with their gym and eucalyptus steam room (perfect for enjoying the ambiance without worrying about burning in the NYC summer heat). Or, if you’re really interested in having access to a luxury lap pool all year long, inquire about their membership options, which allows unlimited use of the facilities for 12 months, no massage required. The pool is open to those 16 and older, unless accompanied by a parent.

The central location of this luxury pool is one both Midtown East and Westside residents will love.

The Peninsula Hotel

Similar to the Park Hyatt, you can gain access to the fabulous rooftop glass-enclosed pool at The Peninsula Hotel in one of two ways: book a spa treatment, or become a member. Membership here also includes full access to their fitness facilities, steam room, sauna, as well as a host of yoga and fitness classes. In addition to the pool, you’ll also have access to their sun deck and garden, meaning you can go in and out of the sun for a dip back into the pool as often as needed. Feel free to order poolside meals here for a full luxury summertime experience.

Glenwood Residential Buildings

As current Glenwood residents know, they don’t need to go far to find a luxury pool, as they have one right in their building! The pools in our buildings range from full sized Olympic pools to lap pools, and are located both indoors and outdoors. As New Yorkers are aware of all too well, having access to an in-building pool is a true treat, and lounging poolside with a good book in hand is something you’ll be able to savor all summer long. For those current and future tenants of Glenwood Luxury Apartments, here are our buildings with pools:

Nestled in the Northwest corner of the Bronx is the neighborhood Riverdale. It’s safe to say that Riverdale is the most affluent area of the borough, and definitely among the top contenders in all of New York City. Not surprisingly, it also has one of the lowest crime rates of any neighborhood in all five boroughs. If you’re one to appreciate a view, Riverdale will wow you with its spectacular views of the Empire State Building, George Washington Bridge, and the Hudson River–all thanks to having some of the highest elevation in NYC.

Whether you’re looking to take a day trip to explore the area, or happen to live in Glenwood’s Briar Hill luxury apartment community, there’ss many ways to take advantage of a day spent in Riverdale.

First, Grab Your Coffee

Like the rest of NYC, there is certainly no shortage of the acclaimed chain Starbucks in the neighborhood. However, if you’re hoping to check out something more mom-and-pop, head to Mon Amour Coffee and Wine. It’s Riverdale’s local Parisian destination serving up coffee and espresso drinks, baked goods, and gourmet sandwiches and salads. From the exposed brick walls to the freshly cut flowers, this is the type of coffee shops that invites you in to get comfortable and stay awhile.

Next, Immerse Yourself In A Bit Of Culture

Riverdale is home to Wave Hill, a beautiful public garden and cultural center situated on the Hudson River. You can pop in for the day to take in the botanical wonders, have lunch in their on-site cafe, or even watch the sunset in one of their Adirondack chairs facing the river. If you’re hoping to get a bit of culture out of the experience, check out their online calendar for a list of upcoming events. These include family art projects, guided garden walks, and outdoor concerts.

Enjoy Some Dinner

Now that an appetite has been worked up, head to Antonio’s Trattoria for a classic Italian meal. Dishes here are created based on traditional recipes which will make you feel as though you’ve stepped into someone’s Italian grandmother’s kitchen. You’ll find staples on the menu such as spaghetti with meatballs, gnocchi, brick oven pizzas, piping hot calzones, and tiramisu. For the truly adventurous (or truly starving!), try the Nutella Pizza.

Grab A Nightcap

Before returning home for the evening, stop by the Bronx Alehouse for a nightcap or two. This neighborhood joint is a favorite among locals, and as the first Craft Beer bar in the Bronx, it’s easy to see why. They feature 16 rotating lines of brewsky, 1 cask-conditioned ale, and an extensive bottle and craft can beer menu at all times. If you’re still feeling hungry, grab a bit of homemade pub fare (artichoke dip, anyone?) to go with.

If you're fortunate enough to live right near one of the more than 1,700 public parks and playgrounds that make New York City among the greenest urban areas on the planet well…. then, that's where we'll probably find you this weekend. Yay spring!. But even though New Yorkers all have their favorite neighborhood spots for promenade strolling, bench sitting, sprinkler frolicking, ball playing, dog running–you name, we got it–there are also plenty of destination parks in this town, well worth packing up the crew and getting on a subway to spend an afternoon. Here are a few of our favorites…

Tourists walking the path at Fort Tryon on a sunny day

Uptown NYC Parks

Starting up in the Bronx, Wave Hill is a plant-lovers' heaven, with some 15 different types of gardens open for leisurely wandering or guided tours. This Riverdale gem plays host to classes and activities with views of the Hudson, and the Palisades Cliffs, that are spectacular. In Upper Manhattan, the pick is Fort Tryon Park which, in addition to hosting a very fun Renaissance Festival each fall, also offers wonderful river vistas and nicely under-populated strolling and picnicking grounds. And though it's hard to believe that anything having to do with Central Park could be called "undiscovered", the amazing Conservatory Gardens at 105th and Fifth never seems to attract much of a crowd, making it one of the prettiest, most peaceful locations in the city. Central Park bonus adventure: take a walk through the North Woods, just past Lasker Rink heading west, which has an improbable waterfall and so many trees that you literally can't see a single building.

Downtown NYC Parks

Going downtown, if you have kids the place to visit is lower Hudson River Park, especially around the Pier 25 area, which has a great little mini-golf course, a skate park, a terrific playground, plus, starting again in May, a beautiful old lighthouse tender (it's a kind of ship), the Lilac, on which you can explore. Keep going south and you'll hit the grassy lawns of Rockefeller Park (talk about spectacular views!), which also hosts many of the River to River concerts in the summer. And don't miss Teardrop Park, tucked away just across the street and home to one of the best slides in the city. Finally, one of my favorite newly developed spots is Brooklyn Bridge Park, from the cool playgrounds of Pier 6 and playing fields/BBQ grills of Pier 5 (and Fornino's rooftop pizza joint and Ample Hills ice cream stand, respectively) to the free kayaking at Pier 2 and rolling lawns of Pier 1.
