Close up of bedroom with neutral tones Living in an apartment in NYC can often feel a bit tight, especially if you have recently moved from the suburbs or have a growing family! But, don’t worry! There are some easy, great tricks to help create a larger and more open feel to your apartment. Whether you live uptown or downtown, these tips can change the atmosphere of your entire apartment. Check out Glenwood’s tips on how to create the feel of a larger space below!

Hang Art Or Shelves High

Four pictures of leaves in black frame on wall
If you have art throughout your Glenwood apartment, the key is to try to draw your eye up vertically. So, try to hang art an inch or two higher than you normally would to create the illusion of taller walls. It is an easy trick to create the appearance of higher ceilings! This trick also works with shelves if you have floating shelves in your apartment, simply start them an inch or two higher than you normally would. This is an easy trick that anyone can do! Similarly, if you are hanging two pieces of art on top of each other, if one has lighter colors in it hang it above the darker colored piece of art. It will help to draw your eye up the wall instead of down.

Paint The Walls Light Colors

Neutral painted wall with plant in left corner
If you are trying to visually open up your apartment to create the illusion of more space, try painting your apartment walls a light color. Light paint colors like shades of white, cream, light grey, or light blue will all open up a space. Think about dens, often people paint them darker colors like navy or hunter green to make the space feel cozier, so if you want to open up a space, do the opposite! Additionally, keep the same color on the walls in the entrance and immediate spaces. So, if your entry flows into your living and dining area, try to keep the walls all one color. If you paint small, neighboring spaces two different colors, you visually chop up the areas instead of creating a visually flowing space. Be sure to check with your building’s management office before you paint the walls to check their policy! Glenwood apartment’s must be returned in the same condition as originally presented to a tenet.

Use Area Rugs

If your apartment has the living and dining area in the same, smaller space, there are ways to make the two areas feel more independent and large. Try an area rug! If you put an area rug in your living room area, under your couch and coffee table for example, you create a distinctive, separate space from your dining table that may be situated a few feet away. Area rugs are great for separating spaces in an apartment. If you live in a studio apartment, you should definitely make use out of this great trick! You can create a bedroom area too by putting an additional area rug under your bed if you do live in a studio apartment.

Use Furniture With Storage

A great trick to opening up a smaller apartment space is to use furniture with built in storage. This way, you don’t need extra dressers or things laying around to clutter your space. In your bedroom, try a bed frame with drawers built in! If you don’t love the look of shelves in the bed frame, you can choose a bed that has drawers on one side or that masks the appearance of the drawers altogether. Also in your bedroom, try to find nightstands with deeper, numerous drawers. In your living room, a coffee table with storage is great for throw blankets, magazines, and books! It can help declutter your space instantaneously! Small ottomans with storage are also great in the living room. Not only for storage purposes, but they don’t take up much space and can be used for guest seating or as your footrest depending on how many people you are having over.

Try To Use Mirrors

Mirror used in apartment living room that is half circle shaped, the design is modern earthy
Mirrors are a great way to create the illusion of a bigger space! Either hanging a mirror on a wall as décor or placing a large standing mirror in an entry or living room area can immediately open up an area. You can find so many different, great mirrors to match your design aesthetic online or in home good stores. The key is to place the mirror somewhere that you enjoy what it is reflecting. You don’t want to place a mirror somewhere that emphasizes the messy book shelves that you never sort through! So, just be mindful of what you want the mirror to reflect! How To Pick Art For Your Apartment? Visit The Armory Show For Inspiration https://www.glenwoodnyc.com/manhattan-living/armory-week-guide/ Sat, 29 Feb 2020 09:35:19 +0000 http://glenwoodstage.wpengine.com/?p=14209 NYC's biggest art week is almost here. As art fairs begin to take over Manhattan for Armory Week, our guide will help you keep track of everything this week has to offer.

Moving into a new apartment in NYC, you want your space to feel like your home. A great way to do this is to put up some art! Art is an easy way to personalize your own space and bringing character to your Glenwood apartment. While some of us may know what type of art we are drawn to immediately, other may find the process a bit daunting. Whether you are an art aficionado or novice, attending The Armory Art Show this March is a great way to gain some inspiration!

Attend The Armory Show

A group of friends looking at art in an exhibit

The Armory Show is taking place March 5th-8th, from noon to early evening, at Piers 90 and 94, which are at 711 12th Avenue. The show usually is hosted at Pier 92 and 94, but due to some structural damage of Pier 92, the works that would have been shown at Pier 92 are being relocated to Pier 90.   This is convenient for Glenwood residents living at Emerald Green, Crystal Green, The Sage, The Encore, Hawthorn Park, The Regent and The Grand Tier, and is definitely still worth the subway or cab ride from uptown or downtown Glenwood buildings. The Armory Show exhibits some of the most critical artworks from the 20th and 21st centuries. This year is the 26thAnniversary of the event, so it is sure to be extra special!  Click here to find out some more logistics for the show. This art show was founded by four New York based gallerists Colin de Land, Pat Hearn, Matthew Marks, and Paul Morris, who held their first fair at The Gramercy Park Hotel in 1994. Notable artists like Tracey Emit participated in the very early years of the fair while it still took place at The Gramercy.

At this point in time, the art fair was called The Gramercy International Art Fair. You may be wondering how the name of this world known event became The Armory Show. Well, due to the popularity and size of the show, it needed to relocate to encompass all of the galleries and artists who wanted to display their work. So, in 1999, the fair moved to The 69thRegiment Armory in NYC to be able to display a large amount of works. With the art fair’s consistently growing popularity, it eventually had to move to the NYC Piers, where it is today and kept its name of The Armory Show.

Make A Day Out Of The Armory Show

Do:

If you are looking to make a day out of this art fair, you are in luck! There are great things to do and eat close to the Pier!  If you are looking for another activity to tag onto the art fair, The Intrepid is close by. The Intrepid Air and Space Museum is located at Pier 86 on West 46th Street. This unique museum is aboard a US aircraft carrier, The USS Intrepid. There are numerous, interactive exhibits that are fun for all ages! And, who doesn’t want to experience what being on a real aircraft carrier is like!

Another fun activity is Lucky Strikes, the bowling alley. It is also close by located at 624 West 42nd Street. The bowling lanes fill up, so make sure to reserve a lane ahead of time. Be sure to note that the bowling alley is 21 and over at night.

Eat:

If you are visiting the art fair during the day and are looking for a coffee shop to grab a coffee and bite before or after walking around, visit Fika located at 824 10th Avenue. Not only does Fika have great coffee, but it has the best chocolate! A wonderful Swedish coffee and chocolate shop, it is sure to make your day that much sweeter!

If you are looking to have a nice dinner after visiting the Armory Show, there are great restaurants close by! Marea is a high end Italian restaurant located at 240 Central Park South. It is sure to have a lively crowd filled with many people from the Art Fair—you will definitely have a fabulous time! Another great dinner spot nearby is Taboon, located at 773 10th Avenue. It is a great Mediterranean restaurant with a fun ambience.

Find Inspiration For Your Apartment:

Now that you have visited one of New York City’s most popular art fairs, you may have some inspiration ready to fill your Glenwood apartment walls with art! Paying attention to colors, patterns, and types of art that spoke to you, you can begin your artwork search. Was it bright reds or cool blues that you liked most? Perhaps you found a specific artist that really spoke to you? Instead of splurging for the astronomically priced piece, you can sometimes find great posters online. Now, yes, some posters can look rather bleak on a wall.  But, if you take it to your neighborhood framer, you can turn that poster into something really special! Additionally, be sure to check out The Affordable Art Fair taking place March 26th-29th at the Metropolitan Pavilion that showcases contemporary art starting at $100.

Whether or not you are a fan of winter, there is always something magical about a snow day. If you have kids, you know they are hoping for a snow day from school, which means superstitions like sleeping with their pajamas on inside out or with a spoon under their pillow just as you may have done as a child! If you are an adult, being snowed in and having to work from home can be a nice treat! Yes, winter storms come with a lot of necessary maintenance, but they can also become a fun or relaxing day! Below are our suggestions on how to make the most out of your snow day in your Glenwood apartment.

Pick Out The Perfect Snow Storm Movie

A couple on the couch with the tv remote watching tv

If you are stuck inside due to a snow storm, curling up on the couch with a hot chocolate or hot tea does sound rather appealing! It is a great time to catch up on that movie you have been dying to see or finish that new series you have been trying to find a time to watch! If you have younger children, watching movies with a snow theme is always fun. Some movies that will keep them entertained and excited about the snow are films like Frozen, Happy Feet, or The Chronicles of Narnia! These movies are fun for the whole family to watch together! If you are looking for a more serious weather related movie you can watch The Day After Tomorrow or Eight Below! You can check out a compiled list of snow themed movies by clicking here!

The Barclay – Luxury East Side Apartments Now Available

Use Your Building’s Amenity Spaces

If a snow storm lasts more than a day, you may find yourself having a case of cabin fever—especially if you have your kids home from school! This is a perfect opportunity to make use of your uptown or downtown Glenwood building’s amenity spaces. If you start to feel restless, check if your building has a gym. Even if your gym is something you don’t visit often, this may be a good time to stretch out your legs on the treadmill! If you have younger children at home, you may have a Glenwood playroom in your west side or east side apartment that would be a great outlet for your children to expend their pent up energy! Some Glenwood buildings even have pools—what a fun thing to do with your family during a snow day, go for a dip!

Stock Up On Food and Snacks

Hot chocolate and gingerbread cookies on a light wood table with pink decor accents

If you know a snow day is approaching, it is smart to stock up on some items like food and water! Aside from the essential food items, it is fun to do something a little special for yourself or your family during snow days. If you are planning on having a movie day or hot coco party with your kids, stop at the store before the storm hits to grab things like popcorn, hot chocolate mix, marshmallows and whatever other special snow storm treats are your favorite! Making s’mores in the microwave is always a cute and fun idea too!

Tip!

Brown snow boots stepping in snow

If you go out during the storm, your shoes will most likely have salt from the sidewalks on them which can affect your apartment floors! Using an indoor rubber shoe mat for your winter boots is a great help to avoid this problem! A mat is easy to store with items like your holiday decorations so it’s ready to be brought out in time for the seasonal winter storm!

Preparedness is key! There are a few gadgets and tools all New Yorkers should have accessible in their Glenwood apartment to be ready for anything. Here are 7 things no one should be living without.

toolkit supplies

A Tool Kit

While this might not be something you’ll be in need of every day (you’re a New Yorker, after all), we promise you’ll be really happy you have easy access to one when the need arises. Planning to hang a new picture? You’ll need a hammer and a nail. Putting together the play-kitchen for your little one? You’ll need ALL the tools!

All-Natural Cleaning Products

There are a few key things a New Yorker NEVER wants to run out of, and we’re going to go ahead and lump them under the umbrella “cleaning products”. Except since you’re New Yorkers, we’re going to go even one better and assume that you’re already using (or are about to switch!) to the all-natural variety. Better for the home, better for the people who live there (pets included!), and better for mama earth. Products that fall under this category can include: laundry detergent, cleaning sprays, dishwashing soap, and of course, plenty of rags, sponges, and paper towels to do all the heavy scrubbing. While we’re at it, we’ll go ahead and throw toilet paper into this category, too! The company Grove Collaborative is an easy spot to order all your goods from–they offer free shipping, right to your front door, Downtown all the way to the Upper East Side!

Drive up a circular driveway with fountains, landscaped entrance and gardens, and be greeted by 24-hour door service. Relax on a sun deck and enjoy upscale amenities. Learn more about available one and two bedroom luxury apartments today!

A Power Strip

Even if you don’t have a use for a power strip right now, per se, there’ss so many opportunities when one will be needed, and you’ll be thrilled you have one handy! From having a central place to plug in the entire family’s smart phones and electronic devices, to having an easy way to connect the TV to your Apple TV device, while still not losing functionality of Amazon’s Alexa, these little things take up practically no room but are super useful.

Batteries

How many times have you been in the middle of a Netflix binge when your remote control dies? Or your toddler gets a new toy from Grandma that requires Double A’s (but of course doesn’t come with them)? To prevent last minute runs to Duane Reade, stack up on batteries of varying sizes and keep them in a drawer where everyone in the house has access (except the toddlers, of course!)

light bulb

Light Bulbs

…Because have you ever been in the bathroom before when the lightbulb decides to blow? You’ll be so happy you had the foresight to keep a few spares hidden in a drawer!

A Plunger

Hopefully it’s not something you’ll need to reach for often, but imagine your relief when it’s there, totally handy, in your time of need! Plus, in the case of having visitors or out of town guests this is always a much appreciated tool to have tucked away in the bathroom in the case of an unexpected emergency. It will save much embarrassment for your guests!

fresh produce

The Ingredients To Throw Together A Quick Meal

Whether you’re a New Yorker who orders in all your meals to your Westside Grand Tier apartment, eats them all out, or is a gourmet chef who prepares a three course feast every evening, there’ss no denying the beauty of keeping a few ingredients on hand to throw together a quick and easy meal for those times you don’t feel like eating out or cooking something elaborate. The great part about this is it doesn’t have to be anything complex–from keeping your favorite brand of frozen pizza in the freezer to fresh veggies from the Farmer’s Market to throw together a salad in your fridge, it’s a satisfying feeling to whip up something quick when that hangry (i.e. hungry + angry) feeling starts to hit!

Turning Your Bathroom Into A Personal Spa https://www.glenwoodnyc.com/manhattan-living/turning-your-bathroom-into-a-personal-spa/ Fri, 14 Sep 2018 10:00:03 +0000 http://glenwoodstage.wpengine.com/?p=19908 NYC is the city that never sleeps, but sometimes you need a break. Rather than spending a small fortune for a spa treatment in the city, transform your bathroom into a blissful sanctuary that you can enjoy every night! We'll help you get started with our best tips for your apartment.

The post Turning Your Bathroom Into A Personal Spa appeared first on NYC Luxury Apartments for Rent | Glenwood Management.

After a long day of work, running around with the kids, or studying at school, coming home to a spa in your very own bathroom is the perfect way to unwind. You can create your own sanctuary by making just a few small additions to your bathroom with items that can be found at your local Bed Bath & Beyond–with easily accessible locations on the Upper East Side and the Westside at Grand Tier! You’ll be pleasantly surprised that your bathroom has gone from simply functional to sensationally fabulous! With the use of the below tips, your bathroom will be transformed into a spa sanctuary in no time.

Bluetooth Speaker

Think about the last time you were at a spa…what did you hear? Chances are it was a lovely and relaxing soundtrack. Whether it was nature sounds (think: waterfalls, rain showers, birds chirping, or ocean waves crashing), soothing “spa tracks”, or light jazz, you’ll never enter a luxury spa without all your senses being indulged–hearing included. An easy way to replicate this in your bathroom is to get a bluetooth speaker–these can be as inexpensive or as high tech as you wish, and come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Simply pair your smartphone with the speaker before you begin your bathroom session (apps like Pandora and Spotify are great places to access relaxing pre-made playlists), and let your mind drift.

Heated Towel Rack

There’s something about exiting the bath or shower and being welcomed into a nice, warm towel. This can easily be achieved by investing in a towel warmer. These little gems come in standing versions, meaning there’ss no drilling into the wall required, and they are perfect for Glenwood renters! You can also drape your robe over them for added coziness.

Essential Oils and Candles

Engage your sense of smell with plenty of essential oils and candles on hand. There’s so many ways to use essential oils in your bathroom routine, but a few favorites are diffusing a relaxing scent, creating bath bombs to enjoy in your tub, or mixing a few drops together with your favorite oil for a lovely post-bath moisturizing session (just be sure it’s one of the gentle oils such as lavender–we wouldn’t recommend doing this with peppermint!)

Candles can be scented, or even unscented, but the gentle warmth of the flame does plenty to help you settle into relaxation. Tealights take up little room, can be placed in a variety of places with or without a holder, and are safer to use than tall pillar candles, or tapers. You can also use scented tealights, which will do double duty—visual and olfactory ambiance.

Super Plush Towels and Robes

The quality of towels and robes you use in your spa bathroom should be the best your budget allows, in order to mimic a luxury spa. The great thing about investing in high quality towels and robes is that, unlike cheaper versions, you can use them more times before throwing them into the wash. Frette is known for their luxury bath products, and their location on Madison Avenue on the Upper East Side is very close to those residents living at The Fairmont.

Don’t Have Clutter Sitting Around

One thing all spas have in common is that none of them have personal items lying about, including plastic shampoo and soap containers, razors and shaving gel, children’s bath toys, or laundry strewn on the floor. Purchase glass bottles to decant your favorite brands of shampoos, conditioners, and soaps (it will look a lot more streamlined and classy), and have a pretty basket to house any other items that may be prone to sitting out (makeup supplies, we’re talking to you!)

For even more inspiration, check out the best spa experiences in NYC–you’re sure to get plenty of ideas to replicate in your own home (not to mention a peaceful afternoon of relaxation!)

Etsy is a wonderful site where artists and entrepreneurs can sell their unique, hand-crafted products or vintage finds from around the world! With literally millions of Etsy shops to sort through, it can feel more like a chore than a fun shopping spree to purchase from the online marketplace. That’s why we did the heavy lifting work for you!

Below, we’ve rounded up a selection of shops specializing in home furnishings that are perfect for adding a special touch to your home. This will help you add unique flare to your NYC home, no matter if you’re going for an Upper East Side preppy vibe or Westside funky vibe!

Old New House Etsy

For Rugs: Old New House

A really amazing rug can make or break a room, so this is an area it pays to spend a little extra money. If you’re looking for something truly unique, skip ABC Carpet in Downtown Manhattan, and click on over to the Etsy shop Old New House, which features “original rugs for the inspired home”. Started in 2010 by husband and wife team Melissa and Dave (also New Yorkers!), they specialize in semi-antique rugs, that are truly one of a kind. They currently have over 2,000 items for sale in their shop (with hundreds of positive customer reviews), making this big investment decision one you can feel secure about.

Good to Know: They offer a 3-day return policy on their items, in case the piece just doesn’t vibe with your space.

PopOColor Page

For Pillows: PopOColor

Throw pillows are a great starter way to refresh your space for a few reasons. They’re a relatively small purchase on the grand scheme of home design (much less than a piece of furniture, both in space and cost!) This makes it easy to try something new without the fear of hating it in a few months. And even if you do, you can always choose to swap your pillows out seasonally, since they’re so easy to store (just keep the inserts and fold up the cases, putting them into your linen closet until next summer/fall/winter/spring!)

We love the diversity of options available at PopOColor. The Etsy shop has been live since 2011, and hails from Boston by designer Katie Corrigan. She believes “pillows are the jewelry of a room”, and with over 500 current designs to choose from, there’ss surely something to fit in with your personal style. Even if you can’t find your exact dream pillow, just message her, as she’s happy to take custom orders (and even search for your dream fabric for you–this is her specialty!)

Good to Know: There’s a selection of pillows at 50% off, which is a steal of a way to freshen up your living space, or even your outdoor balcony furniture if you’re at a Glenwood residence with outdoor space, such as The Bamford.

For Furniture: VintageRefinedDecor

If you’re looking for a piece of furniture to complete a room, say a set of drawers for your new nursery, a desk for your home office, a side table to complete your master suite, or chairs for your dining room, look no further than VintageRefinedDecor. Based out of Chicago by Ashley Harding, we’re confident you’ll love this shop as much as we do for the following reasons. Ashley spends her time sourcing high quality, vintage furniture, which she then brings to her studio and perfects. This could mean staining it a color to meet your decor needs, or putting a fresh coat of navy paint on to fit in with your nautical themed living room, or even adding fun knobs for a hint of whimsy. Whatever the case, each piece is finished with love, and a personalization of your choosing.

Good to Know: Did you just inherit old furniture from your grandparents? Get in touch, as Ashley also takes pieces already in your possession and will finish them off to your liking.

Room decorated with red

Given the current weather, it may seem like Spring is a long way ahead, but March 20 will be here before you know it! Interested in revamping the décor of your living room just in time for its arrival? Then you’ve come to the right place! After some online digging, we found so many interior decorating tips to make your NYC apartment elegant and stylish, that we couldn’t fit them in one post! Here is the first set.

Beige fabric curtains hung in a white-colored living room

Get Fabric Curtains

Why not add something to your standard blinds and spice up your windows? Some fabric curtains, like those beige ones above, will give an elegant touch to your living room. According to Young Huh of Young Huh Interior Design, “Fabric curtains immediately add luxurious structure and color to a room.” We couldn’t agree more. Make sure you’re using light colors that match the walls’ color, as this would give the illusion of a bigger and brighter room.

Add Splashes of Color

There’s beauty in simplicity. If you think the above look includes a lot of dollar signs, you couldn’t be more wrong: It’s all about buying the right items and sorting them creatively. Basic requirements include floral decorations, beige lamp, black couch with some pillows, and paintings or portraits on the walls. You can definitely go with other items and color schemes, but always get a second opinion.

Keep Scaling In Mind

Ever been to a tiny apartment that has large sofas topped with giant pillows? We feel your pain. That’s why scaling is everything. In fact, smaller or moderately-sized furnishings are what you need if you’re trying to make your apartment look larger. Choose a bright color (red, blue, purple, etc.) for your couch, and then align matching pillows across it. The reverse would apply if your couch has a basic, toned-down color (grey, beige, black, or white). So, please spread the word and end every decorator’s nightmare. Not to forget, pulling the furniture away from the wall will make your living room look more open and inviting.

Invest In a Rug

According to Owner and Principal designer of Amber Interiors, Amber Lewis, rugs are “artwork for the floor!” Just like the one in the previous picture, a colorful and patterned rug gives a room many dimensions and an element of sophistication, thus separating it from a one-dimensional one. Let the rug hunt begin!

purple curtains open to show a large living room with a circular mirror at the end

Hang a Mirror

Mirror, mirror, on the wall who’s the fairest apartment of them all? Why yours of course (with the right mirror)! We already established that a bigger room is a better room, so hang a big mirror opposite your window to see light reflected across the space. Don’t limit yourself to a certain shape either; a mirror can be trendy whether it’s circular, squared, rectangular, or even triangular!

Indoor green pot plant placed in front a window

Add a Plant

A little greenery always makes a room fresher and brighter, and that’s why plants shouldn’t be underestimated. If there’s little to no floor space, you can always try a hanging plant, or place one a shelf.

Large, black-and-white, wooden bookcase with a TV in the bottom corner and small figurines in the middle.

Get The Right Bookcase

Problem: You’re a bookworm having trouble finding space for a bookshelf. Solution: Purchase the bookcase that’s just the right size for you and your apartment! Place your lamps, picture frames, and books without overcrowding your space. So long bulky bookcases!

Which decorating tip will you go with for your apartment? We’re eager to read your answers in the comments!

Seems like it actually might be warm now for the duration (though let's not forget the April blizzard of '82!). Spring ushers in lots of activites in New York, such as the flower shows we wrote about recently. But it's also time to clean your home. Ugh, I know, but remember: there are few chores that feel more satisfying when you're done than a big (or even semi-big!) spring cleaning. Now, I am no expert on the subject as my kids will tell you, but we scoured the internet and found a number of sites with some stellar-sounding advice.

Scrub Two Things and Call Me in the Morning

For example, Ashley Brown, normally at Seventh House on The Left, guest-posted 10 Spring Cleaning Tips and Tricks on Home Depot's reliably-handy Apron blog. Using a lint roller to clean fabric lamp shades is an immediate keeper, and I kind of like the idea of spending 10 minutes at the end of every day (Brown sets a timer) to tidy up or scrub down something that will have a real impact on the way your home feels in the morning. The organization fanatics at A Bowl Full of Lemons always have good ideas on how to manage your clutter, but it was their recent post on cleaning your fridge that finally inspired me to do mine, and it makes me happy every time I open it (which is a lot).

Top to Bottom Spring Cleaning Lists

No surprise, our friends at Apartment Therapy have several evergreen posts on the subject, including this gem from last year, a floor-to-ceiling roundup packed with proven strategies on cleaning everything from shower curtains and medicine cabinets to your computer keyboard and garbage cans, as well as a list of 25 places to donate unwanted clothes. The Huffington Post has a good list of off-beat organizers for every room; How Stuff Works put up one of their typically comprehensive guides, which is especially inspiring for their prep tips;

What to Use: Green Cleaning Products

Long gone (I hope) are the days where a good bleach solution to clean most anything is the preferred method. Today, environmentally concious home dwellers are opting for "green" cleaning products that get the job done while having no impact on the environment. The folks at the Well+Good NYC blog suggest that with a little smart shopping, a dash of awareness, and some time to create home-made solutions, you can clean green with these non-toxic cleaners! Treehugger also recenty posted their take on green cleaning, an idea which seems to be is catching!

Because, as a friend of ours once said, "it takes a long time to read the internet", you may have missed a few of our favorite apartment living links (however tangentially related) from these past few weeks, just as we probably missed a few of your favorites. Thus: link swap. We'll go first.

Photographic floor plan of Norweigian cruise line cabins shows NYC apartment living folks how to utilize space

There are many reasons why it's unlikely we will ever go on a cruise, but these photographic floor plans of Norwegian Cruise Lines cabins–from "studios" to "penthouses"–obtained by the crew at Core 77 made us think we should get a round bed for our kids' room. Kidding! BUT it is smart, using those space-saving curves and at-first-glance odd angles… and they all made us feel grateful for every square foot we have!

A tight interior space showing three rooms, with a wooden ladder against the wall and chipped, peeling paint on the floor and walls

We're big Sloane Crosley fans, especially her first collection of essays, I Was Told There'd Be Cake, in which she totally nails, in often very funny fashion, what it's like to be young, single, overwhelmed, and underpaid in New York City. (Her second collection, How Did You Get This Number, was great on relationships and breakups, less great on everything else). Anyway, Sloane Crosley had a terrific piece in the Times' Home section last week, called "Empty Rooms, No Regrets", about the often contradictory emotions that surround moving into a new home and, even more strange, moving away from your old one, where so much LIFE happened; and the false nostalgia you can feel about your "old" neighborhood just weeks–days!–after leaving it ("It requires a supreme level of sappiness to look longingly at a bank that isn't yours next to a children's store you never once entered"); and we're recommending it to everyone who'll listen.

A room with a book shelf full of books, an old bike on top and a red couch in front shows nyc apartment living at its finest

We've never mastered the art of book wrangling in our apartment living in NYC… even now, with Kindles all around, we still have piles of them spilling over into everything, everywhere. And we're not alone in our self-induced affliction, either, as scrolling through just a few pages of this chaotic but charming tumblr, Bookshelf Porn's editor's favorites will attest. Then watch organizing the bookcase, a cute stop-motion animation, currently making the rounds.

A photomontage from Bill Cunningham showing a man on a bike, a women in a green coat with an umbrella, a women in red with a black bag, a man in a yellow suit

True, this next is more about NYC apartment living after we LEAVE our homes each day, but still, how can we not give a shout-out to the awesome octogenarian, New York Times fashion-on-street essayist and photographer, Bill Cunningham's on the street videos are always a treat, and we can't wait for the sure-to-be-delightful documentary of his life and work, Bill Cunningham New York, opening on March 16.

A wall of salon style artwork is how nyc apartment living folks do it - this batch includes portraits, landscapes and abstract art

And we couldn't have a links round-up on apartment living without the inclusion of something from Apartment Therapy, which always inspires and delights, day after day. In this post, Janal Laban scours the site's House Tour submissions from the last six months for a look at Hot Artwork and Display Ideas, most of which we like, especially the mash ups of portraits with (thematic) multiples; and vintage tech with, again, multiples. Can you tell we love Bernd and Hilla Becher's Typologies
