Pile of moving boxes and household stuff in living room

Sometimes circumstances necessitate a fast move that can take you out of your comfort zone. There are a number of things you can do to prepare for a quick getaway. It’s a good time to pare down, and get items out of your life that you no longer need to carry from place to place. Just because time is of the essence, does not mean that the move has to be done in a haphazard way. Everything should be well labeled so that you have a system in place to ensure the packing and unpacking goes relatively easily. Professional help can be lined up, and there are always those friends that you can count on. Below, we’ve rounded up our top tips for moving on short notice.

Step #1: Make Reservations

Man holding clipboard on blurred boxes background

Assuming you have the move-in date set for your new place, don’t waste a second making reservations for your move. Whether this comes in the form of hiring movers to do the whole thing, renting a U-Haul to do it yourself, or calling in a favor from a friend with a truck, figure out which method best suits your life circumstances and secure the date now. Especially during the summer, you’ll have a lot of people who are also in the same camp as you, and the last thing you want to find out if you wait until the last minute is that there’ss no availability. This will only leave you scrambling for another option, but also paying much higher than you would have earlier in the process. (However, don’t let that summer is a busy time deter you from moving. Here’s 5 reasons to move during the summer!)

Step #2: Write A List Of The Major Things To Keep, Sell, Or Donate

Person sorting through boxes, keep, donate, discard

Obviously, you’re in a time crunch here so we’re not talking about going through your closet item by item and holding them up to see what sparks joy. Instead, we’re talking more big-ticket items, such as furniture, rugs, and appliances. Ask yourself questions such as:

–Am I downsizing of upsizing?

–Will the California King bed fit into my new bedroom?

–Does my new apartment come fully furnished with all major appliances, or will I be expected to get my own (such is the case sometimes for apartments in smaller buildings with washer/dryer hookups.)

Next, make a list of all the big pieces that make the cut, as well as ones that you will have no need for in your next home. For example, if you’re moving into a NYC apartment with less living room space than your current home in the suburbs, there’ss a good chance the wrap-around sofa sectional won’t be the best use of space. Figure out if you want to donate it to a charity that accepts used furniture (such as the Salvation Army or Housing Works), or if it’s in good enough condition to take the time to photograph it, post it on a site such as Craigslist or LetGo, and coordinate details to sell it.

Step #3: Stock Up With Packing Gear

Now that you have all the details of the move squared away and are left with only the items which will come with you on your move, it’s time to load up on packing gear. Boxes can be gathered from local stores for free, such as your local wine shop, but again, if you’re in a real rush the most time effective thing to do is to use a store such as The Container Store to secure all your boxes, bubble wrap, containers, tape, and markers. You can purchase the items right from their website and have them deliver it straight to your NYC home for same day delivery, how easy is that?! Glenwood residents can all benefit from this, whether you’re moving from The Bristol in Midtown East or The Encore on the Westside.

Step #4: Pack With A Method

Finally, the day has come to pack! Here’s a little tip though: it takes just as much time to pack in a messy rush as it does an organized one. So, rather than throwing items haphazardly into boxes, take the time to put a method into place. Packing room by room and clearly labeling each box is one easy way to do this. Trust us, your future self will thank you once you get into your new home!

Step #5: Organize A Cleaning Service

Assuming you don’t have the time (or energy, at this point) to spend a solid half a day cleaning your apartment once all the boxes are gone, consider hiring a maid service to come in to do the dirty work for you. While hiring a cleaning service does cost money, it’s absolutely worth shelling out a little in order to get your security deposit back on your apartment! And while you’re at it, it could be totally worth having a cleaning service do a move-in scrub for your new home, too. Starting out on a clean slate after a stressful move is worth its weight in gold.

Here are some simple lifestyle changes you can make to live better starting right away.

Why wait for the new year to make a resolution? If you start now, you will have made some good habits before the end of 2020! Here are some ideas to pick up on this winter season, such as drinking more water, taking time out of every day for self-care, and increasing your daily step count with a walk in nature.

Water being poured into a glass

Drink More Water

Especially with being smack in the middle of holiday season, drinking more water will help you to see huge benefits in your daily life. Did you know that often times when we think we’re hungry, we’re really thirsty? Try drinking a glass of room temperature water before every meal and snack, and it will not only keep you super hydrated, but it will also help cut back on unneeded calories. You can easily keep up with this habit from the comfort of your Glenwood apartment, as most buildings have filtered water throughout. Bonus points for squeezing fresh lemon into your water!

Tips For Making This A Habit: To make drinking water part of your daily routine, invest in a water bottle you love and carry it with you at all times. If you’re into tech, download the app My Water, which will help you track your daily intake of water. That way, if it’s 3pm and you’re only to 18% of your daily goal, you will be getting reminders to chug, chug, chug!

Self-Care

Diffusers and essential oils on a table with floweres

Self-care is actually a habit that should be easy for you to incorporate, because it’s all about loving on yourself! On airplanes, they always make the announcement at the beginning of a flight to put on your air mask before assisting others, and that’s pretty much what self-care is. It’s all about taking care of yourself first, so that you will be able to take care of your family, job, friends, and all the other tasks that make up everyday life. Many things can fall under the umbrella of self-care, but some examples are massages, pedicures, or your favorite restorative yoga class.

Tips For Making This A Habit: Pinpoint the self-care rituals that most excite you. If you really anticipate the ritual (i.e. your Monday night meditation class), you will be more likely to stick to it, even when the rest of life gets really busy.

Reading is one of the best habits for intellectual development you can pick up (and no, it doesn’t matter what you’re reading as long as you’re doing it!) However, as we get older it seems harder to find the time to read. Consider having certain portions of your day only to be used for reading. These can be your subway commute, the hour before bedtime, or when you’re waiting to go into appointments or meetings.

Eat More Fresh Food

While “eating healthy” can feel like a daunting task this time of year, “eating more fresh food” actually feels quite doable! Instead of telling yourself you can’t indulge in the cheeseball and pumpkin pie, simply tell yourself that you have to first eat your day’s worth of fresh vegetables and fruit, and then it’s fair game.

Tips For Making This A Habit: Jump start your day with fresh fruit. It can be eaten whole, sauteed, thrown into a smoothie, baked into muffins, or tossed on top of your oatmeal, yogurt, or cereal. Then you’ve already mastered this habit before leaving your Glenwood apartment!

Walk More

A person in grey sweatpants and sneakers walking

If you’ve ever wondered why New Yorkers are in better shape than people in other parts of the country (no judgement!), it’s because we have to walk so much more, and can’t rely on cars to get us everywhere! By increasing our daily step count, it’s automatic exercise.

Tips For Making This A Habit: Give yourself a personal daily step goal, and aim to meet it every day by tracking it on your smartphone or with your smart jewelry/watch. If you reach your goal daily for 30 days, reward yourself with a treat!

Get Out In Nature

Whether you live Downtown, on the Westside, or on the Upper East Side, you have a beautiful park at your fingertips! Take advantage of the greenery and make a point to get into nature several times a week. This will help alleviate stress and anxiety, plus it is great for your physical body as you breathe in fresh air.

Tips For Making This A Habit: While you are increasing your step count (see above), choose to take some of those steps through a park. You’re killing two birds with one stone!

Keep Clutter At Bay

There’s something to be said for a clear space equaling a clear mind, right? Likewise, a cluttered space tends to make us feel more on edge. Whether you’re choosing to keep on top of the clutter so that you can find things easier or so your Grand Tier home looks spick and span for last minute holiday visitors, taking care of clutter immediately helps in more ways than one.

Tips For Making This A Habit: Simply live by the motto that “everything has a place”, and put things back in their place as soon as you are done using them. Realistically, it takes the same amount of time to hang a jacket in the hall closet as it does to drape it on the back of your dining room chair.

Christmas is all about family coming together to enjoy each other’s company and some great food! It’s important not to forget about what some dub the most important course of all… dessert! Today, we’ll share our holiday baking guide, which includes all our favorite tips and tricks to ensure that 2018 is the best year for holiday sweet treats yet!

Get Prepared

First things first: preparation. Comb through all those cookbooks on your shelf for your favorite tried-and-true holiday favorites, or research something new you want to try from Pinterest. Once you have all your recipes in one place, make a master list of all the ingredients you’ll need (plus any special equipment.)

Next, survey your fridge and cabinets to see what you already have and what you’ll need. Make sure you check expiration dates so there’ss no last-minute surprises, especially if you don’t bake often. You’ll make your grocery list from this.

In terms of baking equipment, figure out any gaps you may have. Only own one cookie sheet? Don’t have a mixer? Rather than run out to buy a bunch of stuff you may not use again until next Christmas, consider asking around and borrowing anything that is missing. This is a great way to get to know those neighbors on your Briar Hill floor!

Insider Tip: Rather than head to your Downtown neighborhood grocery store for 7 cartons of eggs that have a high probability of cracking on your way home, why not utilize one of the grocery delivery services NYC is so famous for? You can place online orders through sites such as FreshDirect and Instacart directly from your computer, and they’ll deliver it to your Glenwood home on the date and time of your choosing. This also saves loads of time that would otherwise be spent trying to dodge other New Yorkers in tight grocery store aisles, or waiting in those long, snaking lines that go all the way around the store.

Set A Date

Once you have all your baking supplies, check your calendar for when the magical bake off will happen! If you’re planning to go all out, baking can easily eat up the better part of a day, so figure out if you want to clear off a weekend day, or perhaps jet out of work exactly at 5pm one night and bake late into the evening. Once you have the date and time, set it on your schedule with the importance of a doctor’s appointment, or else there’ss a great chance those treats won’t get made before Christmas Eve!

Insider Tip: Baking is one of those holiday tasks that is often more fun done with other people. If you have kids, make this a family event and get everyone involved. Or, invite friends over to bake with you! Not only does this ensure that you’ll get to hang out before the holiday season is over, but it may just become your favorite new tradition! Pump those holiday tunes and get to baking!

Wrap Them Up

Once the gingerbread is frosted and the peanut butter balls perfectly chilled, it’s time to start packaging. Of course, you’ll want to leave a selection for yourself and your own family to enjoy (we suggest setting these aside first), but half the fun of baking is to share the bounty with other people. Again, make a list of everyone you want to share your goodies with. A good place to start? Your doorman, hair stylist, children’s teachers, co-workers, and personal trainer (hey, it’s the holidays!). Then, load up on cute Christmas-themed tins of various sizes (we adore the ones currently at Flying Tiger, with locations on the Westside and Upper East Side, that are priced perfectly). Or, if you prefer to avoid purchasing anything extra, just use what you have on hand to wrap them up: wax paper and baker’s twine. Simply attach a sweet note on top and voila! Baked goods are ready to go.

Insider Tip: For an extra personal touch, write out the recipe of one of the goodies you are handing out, and attach it to the sweets. You may just pass along the baking itch to all your friends and family, too, and be rewarded with desserts of your own next year!

June’s Restaurant of the Month: Loosie’s Kitchen https://www.glenwoodnyc.com/manhattan-living/restaurant-month-loosies-kitchen/ Fri, 02 Jun 2017 15:08:11 +0000 http://glenwoodstage.wpengine.com/?p=18005 If there's one thing every New Yorker is a pro at, it's navigating through the city and scoping out the hottest restaurants - especially in the warmer months. This month, our noses brought us to the Brooklyn food scene where Loosie's Kitchen incorporates the most delicious foods of New Orleans in a fresh and bright SoCal vibe. From outdoor seating with live music to white wash brick walls behind their rich wood bar, get yourself a glass of rosé and dine with Loosie!

With summer officially kicking off later this month, sitting outdoors to enjoy a meal or two is probably on your weekend to-do list! While there’s certainly no shortage of sidewalk cafes in the city, I recently discovered a true outdoor gem that just screams summer in the city. From white washed exposed brick walls to colorful rugs and bright decor, Loosie’s Kitchen is more than just a meal – it’s a summertime memory in the making.

Located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Loosie’s is located at 91 South 6th Street – just a few blocks from the East River waterfront. While the decor holds true to Southern California vibes, the menu has a definite New Orleans flair to it. Best of multiple cities without leaving New York… talk about the perfect staycation!

To Drink

Get ready to bring your summertime rosé game to a whole new level.

Loosie’s features wine that is natural, organic, biodynamic, and sustainable (try saying that five times fast!) A bottle of Summer Water from California will set you back $50, and you can drink knowing you’re in good health. Their cocktail game is strong, too. I particularly took to the Mexcolada ($12), which is a mix of Mezcal, coffee, coconut, and a touch of Pedro Jimenez – the perfect energetic drink to enjoy before heading out for a night of dancing or watching a summertime flick under the stars!

Manhattan’s West Side vs. East Side

Believe it or not, there are quite a few differences between the West and East Sides of Manhattan! From family-style mom and pop shops to vibrant nightlife, which neighborhood best suits your lifestyle?

To Start

Four words: Homemade ricotta and cornbread. This dish was so delectable I could have easily ordered a few rounds of this and been completely content for the night! The ricotta is mixed with a pistachio basil pesto and sprinkled with pine nuts. It’s the perfect light summertime app, priced at $11. If you want to bring a bit of the Big Easy into your starter course, go with the Cajun Blackened Fluke Lettuce Wraps, which are complemented with candied peanuts, roasted pineapple, spicy pickles, and cilantro ($12).

Entree

Staying true to its southern roots, we suggest you go with the famous Loosie’s Fried Chicken for your main event, which is half a chicken complimented with house cucumber pickles and hot sauce, priced at $18. If you’re a vegetarian, I suggest going with the Mac and Cheese for $11. Even though it’s technically a side dish, it’s massive, ooey and gooey, and absolutely delicious. Share a side of hand cut cajun french fries at $6.

Dessert

Just like you wouldn’t go to New Orleans without having a beignet, you definitely don’t leave Loosie’s without ordering their Nutella Beignets ($10). Served with homemade whipped cream, these are perfectly fried little pieces of dough that will leave you satisfied without being stuffed. So ideal for summer, right?

The Extras

In addition to being the perfect summertime spot to dine, Loosie’s has a sister property on site.

Loosie Rouge is the hip and happening bar, which can be found directly in front of Loosie’s Kitchen. Every week, you can find live music happening here, and here’s the schedule:

  • Piano playing on Mondays 9pm-12am
  • Open mic night Wednesdays 9:30pm to 12:30am
  • Jam sessions on Sundays from 7pm to 11pm

So order that coffee cocktail as your after dinner drink, and head to Loosie’s Rouge for the after party! A perfect summer soiree, indeed!
