Why wait for the new year to make a resolution? If you start now, you will have made some good habits before the end of 2020! Here are some ideas to pick up on this winter season, such as drinking more water, taking time out of every day for self-care, and increasing your daily step count with a walk in nature.

Water being poured into a glass

Drink More Water

Especially with being smack in the middle of holiday season, drinking more water will help you to see huge benefits in your daily life. Did you know that often times when we think we’re hungry, we’re really thirsty? Try drinking a glass of room temperature water before every meal and snack, and it will not only keep you super hydrated, but it will also help cut back on unneeded calories. You can easily keep up with this habit from the comfort of your Glenwood apartment, as most buildings have filtered water throughout. Bonus points for squeezing fresh lemon into your water!

Tips For Making This A Habit: To make drinking water part of your daily routine, invest in a water bottle you love and carry it with you at all times. If you’re into tech, download the app My Water, which will help you track your daily intake of water. That way, if it’s 3pm and you’re only to 18% of your daily goal, you will be getting reminders to chug, chug, chug!

Self-Care

Self-care is actually a habit that should be easy for you to incorporate, because it’s all about loving on yourself! On airplanes, they always make the announcement at the beginning of a flight to put on your air mask before assisting others, and that’s pretty much what self-care is. It’s all about taking care of yourself first, so that you will be able to take care of your family, job, friends, and all the other tasks that make up everyday life. Many things can fall under the umbrella of self-care, but some examples are massages, pedicures, or your favorite restorative yoga class.

Tips For Making This A Habit: Pinpoint the self-care rituals that most excite you. If you really anticipate the ritual (i.e. your Monday night meditation class), you will be more likely to stick to it, even when the rest of life gets really busy.

Reading is one of the best habits for intellectual development you can pick up (and no, it doesn’t matter what you’re reading as long as you’re doing it!) However, as we get older it seems harder to find the time to read. Consider having certain portions of your day only to be used for reading. These can be your subway commute, the hour before bedtime, or when you’re waiting to go into appointments or meetings.

Eat More Fresh Food

While “eating healthy” can feel like a daunting task this time of year, “eating more fresh food” actually feels quite doable! Instead of telling yourself you can’t indulge in the cheeseball and pumpkin pie, simply tell yourself that you have to first eat your day’s worth of fresh vegetables and fruit, and then it’s fair game.

Tips For Making This A Habit: Jump start your day with fresh fruit. It can be eaten whole, sauteed, thrown into a smoothie, baked into muffins, or tossed on top of your oatmeal, yogurt, or cereal. Then you’ve already mastered this habit before leaving your Glenwood apartment!

Walk More

If you’ve ever wondered why New Yorkers are in better shape than people in other parts of the country (no judgement!), it’s because we have to walk so much more, and can’t rely on cars to get us everywhere! By increasing our daily step count, it’s automatic exercise.

Tips For Making This A Habit: Give yourself a personal daily step goal, and aim to meet it every day by tracking it on your smartphone or with your smart jewelry/watch. If you reach your goal daily for 30 days, reward yourself with a treat!

Get Out In Nature

Whether you live Downtown, on the Westside, or on the Upper East Side, you have a beautiful park at your fingertips! Take advantage of the greenery and make a point to get into nature several times a week. This will help alleviate stress and anxiety, plus it is great for your physical body as you breathe in fresh air.

Tips For Making This A Habit: While you are increasing your step count (see above), choose to take some of those steps through a park. You’re killing two birds with one stone!

Keep Clutter At Bay

There’s something to be said for a clear space equaling a clear mind, right? Likewise, a cluttered space tends to make us feel more on edge. Whether you’re choosing to keep on top of the clutter so that you can find things easier or so your Grand Tier home looks spick and span for last minute holiday visitors, taking care of clutter immediately helps in more ways than one.

Tips For Making This A Habit: Simply live by the motto that “everything has a place”, and put things back in their place as soon as you are done using them. Realistically, it takes the same amount of time to hang a jacket in the hall closet as it does to drape it on the back of your dining room chair.

Best Playgrounds In NYC https://www.glenwoodnyc.com/manhattan-living/best-playgrounds-in-nyc/ Fri, 29 Jun 2018 14:43:02 +0000 http://glenwoodstage.wpengine.com/?p=19649 If you're looking for ways to spend time outdoors with your kids in NYC this summer, consider making a trip to one of these parks!

Hello, Summer! Being outside is the perfect thing for young kids (and parents too!) While the kids are home from school this season, get them outside to the playground to take in the fresh air and burn off some extra energy. Below, we’ve highlighted the five best playgrounds in NYC, all located within Glenwood neighborhoods.

Heckscher Playground

For Midtowners: Heckscher Playground

Whether you live in Midtown East or Midtown West, Heckscher Playground is by far the best playground in both ‘hoods! It’s also the oldest and largest playground in Central Park, standing at 1.8 acres. In addition to playground staples such as swings, slides, and a giant sandbox, it’s famous for its rock climbing hills that lead into maze-like tunnels with water play. There’s multiple splash pads at this playground, making it the perfect alternative to a weekend away out East. For kiddos who enjoy kicking a soccer ball around, they’ll love the synthetic turf on the ground.

Parents will appreciate how this large area is enclosed, giving a sense of safety to the play experience. Also, there’ss a killer view of the Central Park South skyline, which is a delight to take in for even the most native New Yorkers. The playground is located at the south end of Central Park, roughly around 7th Avenue and Central Park South, then a few blocks up to 61st Street.

Teardrop Park

For Downtowners: Teardrop Park

Downtown residents have easy access to the beautiful and sustainable Teardrop Park. This two-acre gem was designed by child development experts, and the design alone showcases this. It’s a bit different from your typical park, and in place of jungle gyms and swings you’ll find play elements integrated right into nature aspects: a water playground, sand pits, plenty of grass, a slide along the rock formation, and even a tunnel for deep exploration. Kids will really embrace the ability to use their imagination and get creative in this space, while parents will no doubt enjoy the serene vibe. And for those looking for a bit more structured play, Battery Park City Park offers a program every Wednesday from May through October, featuring lawn games and creative art projects. The playground is located between Warren Street and Murray Street in Battery Park, incredibly close to Barclay Tower residents.

Ancient Playground in Central Park

For Upper East Siders: Ancient Playground

Situated just North of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Ancient Playground pays homage to the Egyptian Art at the MET with its climbing pyramid and slides, obelisk, and sundial. Complete with a sandbox, tire and strap swings, as well as water features such as a mini-waterfall, spray nozzles, and water jets, this is the perfect place for Upper East Siders and their kiddos to while away an afternoon after an outing to the MET. It’s exact location is 5th Avenue at 85th Street, close to The Marlowe.

For Westsiders: Tom Otterness Playground

Artsy Westside residents will appreciate a playground in their neighborhood that is equally artsy: the Tom Otterness Playground. Nestled between two apartment buildings is a massive play sculpture of a gentle giant, with opportunities to both scale its sides and slide down it. The giant will most likely look familiar to New Yorkers, and that’s because artist Tom Otterness has his other sculptural work inhabiting the 14th Street subway station. Another perk about this hidden gem is that there is a dog run close by, meaning you can run your kids and your pooch on the same outing! The playground is located on West 42nd Street between 11th and 12th Avenues, a short walk from Crystal Green.

One of the things New Yorkers learn early on is how to delegate their time to put hours to the very best use. As the summertime rolls around, maybe this means taking a three-day weekend with friends to go backpacking in the Catskills and camping under the stars, or if you have little ones it could mean spending a few extra hours every week enjoying the sunshine together in Central Park. After all, time is one thing we will never be able to get back! That being said, probably the last thing you want to be worried about this summer is cleaning. Instead, check out one of NYC’s most reputable cleaning services, and leave the dirty work to them. After all, they’re the experts! You’ll be grateful to not only come home to a clean apartment, but for all the extra hours you will have, to do what you really love.

An App For Cleaning: Handy

In a world where basically everything is done on our smartphones, why shouldn’t cleaning be made one of them too? Now it can! With the Handy App, you can book in-home cleaning with the simple tap of a button. The app allows you to set up one time cleans, as well as weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly services (which will all get you quite a steep discount!) A three-hour basic clean will set you back $87. And of course, if you’re interested in tagging on extras, such as cabinet cleaning, oven cleaning, fridge clear out, or even furniture assembly, that’s all available, too. All professionals are background checked before they come into your Glenwood home.

App users have rated it 4 out of 5 stars—sounds promising!

Keep Your Clean Environmentally-Friendly: Ms. Green Clean

If you’re into green clean (i.e. all eco-friendly cleaning products), look no further than Ms. Green Clean. They use non-toxic products and lots of old-fashioned elbow grease to get your home to where it needs to be. This approach could be great for families with babies or small children, pet-friendly homes, folks with allergies, or anyone who just generally cares about the environment.

In addition to basic cleaning, Ms. Green Clean also offers thorough eco-friendly carpet and upholstery cleans, meaning you can get your entire home sparking, from your rugs to your drapes to your family heirloom sofa. They base their prices off each apartment (i.e. there’ss no “one size fits all” home to them), so your best bet for getting a quote is to give them a call or email.

New York Magazine nominated Ms. Green Clean as New York’s “Best Cleaning Service.”

For Clutter Cleanses: Genius Organizing

As New Yorkers know all too well, it’s often not just the dust and the sink full of dirty dishes that’s the problem: it’s the sheer amount of stuff in our homes. If your apartment is feeling like a magnet to clutter, consider taking cleaning to the next level by bringing in the Genius Organizing folks. Their services are customizable, meaning you can have them tackle anything from a junk drawer to a closet to the whole apartment.

Extra bonus? They are also happy to help you set up a sale on sites such as Ebay or Craigslist, so you can essentially make a big chunk of change back! Four-hour sessions start at $350. Additionally, you may find it helpful to check out our apartment storage solution tips!

Genius Cleaning comes highly recommended by their customers—they currently have a perfect 5 star rating on Yelp.
