If there’s one thing you just have to do in New York City every winter, it’s ice skating between the skyscrapers. Skating is one of those classic, must-experience traditions that tourists and true New Yorkers alike share. Whether you are an ice skating lover or have been recently inspired after watching Netflix’s new popular show, Spinning Out, NYC has so many choices of rinks to choose from! If you’re not too sure which rink best suits you, here’s a list of our favorite ice skating rinks for you to try out!

Winter Village at Bryant Park

Imagine this: An ice skating rink right smack in the heart of Midtown East. Better yet, it’s three times the size of Rockefeller Center at 17,000 square feet! Winter Village at Bryant Park is one of the most festive spots to really get into the winter spirit. With hot cocoa and seasonal shops surrounding the rink, residents of Glenwood’s nearby Paramount Tower and The Bamford are close to a true winter wonderland!

General admission at the ice skating rink is free for skates of all sizes to show off their moves on the ice. Don’t have your own pair of skates? Lace up a rental set from the park!

Ice Skating at Rockefeller Center

Of course we cannot leave out the most iconic ice skating rink in Manhattan!

From the famous tree in the background, to the New York City Rockettes around the corner, The Rink at Rockefeller Center is one of the most memorable spots in town. With room for only 150 skaters at a time, lace up your skates and check out the rink’s ice time schedule. Open daily from 8:30 am to 12 midnight! Here are a few options to make your trip to The Rink one to remember:

 • Make a VIP skate reservation
 • Plan an engagement on the ice (guarantee you’ll see at least two!)
 • Afternoon tea and skating reservations

The Rink at Brookfield Place

If you’re looking for an ice skating rink that will give you a once-in-a-lifetime skate and a show, skid over to The Rink at Brookfield Place in Downtown Manhattan. This cool spot is nearby Glenwood buildings Barclay Tower and Liberty Plaza, and offers public skating, private lessons, as well as musical skating performances!

The Standard Ice Rink

Sharpen up your blades for a winter thrill of gliding around The Standard Ice Rink. Located on the High Line, The Standard Hotel’s miniature “nightlife” rink is known to stay open late. Stocked with hot cider, black and white hot chocolate, and warm waffles to keep you fueled to skate your heart out. Skaters of all ages are welcome, but this spot is geared more towards adults as the night (or the party) goes on!

Sky Rink at Chelsea Piers

Designed more for hockey leagues and a top-notch figure skating school, the indoor Sky Rink at Chelsea Piers does open its nearly perfect ice for general skating. General skating is open every day of the week besides Wednesday, and skaters of all ages are invited to twirl, jump, and glide. If your child, friend, or family members can’t stay off the ice, Sky Rink offers party packages for skaters to celebrate their day!

Luxury Pools In NYC https://www.glenwoodnyc.com/manhattan-living/luxury-pools-in-nyc/ Fri, 06 Jul 2018 10:00:30 +0000 http://glenwoodstage.wpengine.com/?p=19674 July brings beautiful weather, but sometimes it can be too hot to handle! Cool off at some of the most beautiful luxury pools New York City has to offer.

While access to many of NYC’s luxury hotel pools require a stay at the property, this isn’t exactly practical for residents who live in the city. We’ve done our research and found ways for you to escape the summer heat and indulge in the most exquisite, private, and beautiful pools Manhattan has to offer, that are actually available to the public. Located all around New York City and conveniently close to several of our Glenwood properties, these pools provide an opportunity to enjoy summer in the city like nothing else.

Jimmy at the James

The Jimmy at the James pool is one you’ll want to take special note of, as it’s a luxury rooftop pool that (get this) does not charge a cover fee. Located 18 stories above street level, the pool is truly a hidden oasis. During the week it’s open strictly to hotel guests (but that’s okay, because you’re probably at work anyway), but get ready to join the fun weekends from Memorial Day to Labor Day starting at 3pm for their JIMMY Summer Pool Parties. Don’t let the phrase “pool party” fool you, however. These parties are aimed at the adult crowd, so it’s best to leave the kiddos at home.

Along with plenty of sun and SPF, you can soak in the views and mocktails from their restaurant. There’s plenty of teak decking, chaise lounges for relaxing, and an outdoor shower for rinsing off. Reservations are recommended. Located in Soho, the Jimmy at the James is very convenient for Downtown residents.

Park Hyatt New York

While you technically have to book a treatment in order to have access to the stunning pool at the Park Hyatt, we won’t be too upset about being forced to get a massage. You can book something as short as a 30 minute massage ($150) and gain access to to 61 foot long glass enclosed pool and whirlpool at this Midtown luxury hotel, along with their gym and eucalyptus steam room (perfect for enjoying the ambiance without worrying about burning in the NYC summer heat). Or, if you’re really interested in having access to a luxury lap pool all year long, inquire about their membership options, which allows unlimited use of the facilities for 12 months, no massage required. The pool is open to those 16 and older, unless accompanied by a parent.

The central location of this luxury pool is one both Midtown East and Westside residents will love.

The Peninsula Hotel

Similar to the Park Hyatt, you can gain access to the fabulous rooftop glass-enclosed pool at The Peninsula Hotel in one of two ways: book a spa treatment, or become a member. Membership here also includes full access to their fitness facilities, steam room, sauna, as well as a host of yoga and fitness classes. In addition to the pool, you’ll also have access to their sun deck and garden, meaning you can go in and out of the sun for a dip back into the pool as often as needed. Feel free to order poolside meals here for a full luxury summertime experience.

Glenwood Residential Buildings

As current Glenwood residents know, they don’t need to go far to find a luxury pool, as they have one right in their building! The pools in our buildings range from full sized Olympic pools to lap pools, and are located both indoors and outdoors. As New Yorkers are aware of all too well, having access to an in-building pool is a true treat, and lounging poolside with a good book in hand is something you’ll be able to savor all summer long. Best Playgrounds In NYC https://www.glenwoodnyc.com/manhattan-living/best-playgrounds-in-nyc/ Fri, 29 Jun 2018 14:43:02 +0000 http://glenwoodstage.wpengine.com/?p=19649 If you're looking for ways to spend time outdoors with your kids in NYC this summer, consider making a trip to one of these parks!

The post Best Playgrounds In NYC appeared first on NYC Luxury Apartments for Rent | Glenwood Management.

]]>
Hello, Summer! Being outside is the perfect thing for young kids (and parents too!) While the kids are home from school this season, get them outside to the playground to take in the fresh air and burn off some extra energy. Below, we’ve highlighted the five best playgrounds in NYC, all located within Glenwood neighborhoods.

Heckscher Playground

For Midtowners: Heckscher Playground

Whether you live in Midtown East or Midtown West, Heckscher Playground is by far the best playground in both ‘hoods! It’s also the oldest and largest playground in Central Park, standing at 1.8 acres. In addition to playground staples such as swings, slides, and a giant sandbox, it’s famous for its rock climbing hills that lead into maze-like tunnels with water play. There’s multiple splash pads at this playground, making it the perfect alternative to a weekend away out East. For kiddos who enjoy kicking a soccer ball around, they’ll love the synthetic turf on the ground.

Parents will appreciate how this large area is enclosed, giving a sense of safety to the play experience. Also, there’ss a killer view of the Central Park South skyline, which is a delight to take in for even the most native New Yorkers. The playground is located at the south end of Central Park, roughly around 7th Avenue and Central Park South, then a few blocks up to 61st Street.

Teardrop Park

For Downtowners: Teardrop Park

Downtown residents have easy access to the beautiful and sustainable Teardrop Park. This two-acre gem was designed by child development experts, and the design alone showcases this. It’s a bit different from your typical park, and in place of jungle gyms and swings you’ll find play elements integrated right into nature aspects: a water playground, sand pits, plenty of grass, a slide along the rock formation, and even a tunnel for deep exploration. Kids will really embrace the ability to use their imagination and get creative in this space, while parents will no doubt enjoy the serene vibe. And for those looking for a bit more structured play, Battery Park City Park offers a program every Wednesday from May through October, featuring lawn games and creative art projects. The playground is located between Warren Street and Murray Street in Battery Park, incredibly close to Barclay Tower residents.

Ancient Playground in Central Park

For Upper East Siders: Ancient Playground

Situated just North of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Ancient Playground pays homage to the Egyptian Art at the MET with its climbing pyramid and slides, obelisk, and sundial. Complete with a sandbox, tire and strap swings, as well as water features such as a mini-waterfall, spray nozzles, and water jets, this is the perfect place for Upper East Siders and their kiddos to while away an afternoon after an outing to the MET. It’s exact location is 5th Avenue at 85th Street, close to The Marlowe.

For Westsiders: Tom Otterness Playground

Artsy Westside residents will appreciate a playground in their neighborhood that is equally artsy: the Tom Otterness Playground. Nestled between two apartment buildings is a massive play sculpture of a gentle giant, with opportunities to both scale its sides and slide down it. The giant will most likely look familiar to New Yorkers, and that’s because artist Tom Otterness has his other sculptural work inhabiting the 14th Street subway station. Another perk about this hidden gem is that there is a dog run close by, meaning you can run your kids and your pooch on the same outing! The playground is located on West 42nd Street between 11th and 12th Avenues, a short walk from Crystal Green.

After School Programs in the UWS https://www.glenwoodnyc.com/manhattan-living/after-school-programs/ Fri, 16 Sep 2016 17:35:52 +0000 http://glenwoodstage.wpengine.com/?p=16247 If your child has an eye for baseball, needs a little help with homework, or simply wants to stay busy after school, there's an after school program for just that! Keep your kids engaged and entertained with our list of after school programs in the Upper West Side!

With school officially in session, parents may be looking for after-school activities to enhance their kids’ days. From homework help, sports, arts and crafts, learning a new language, or even a variation of everything above, there’s no shortage of ways kids can keep their minds active after school lets out. Here’s five of our favorites in the Upper West Side!

The Baseball Center NYC: Best for Yankees and Mets Fans

If you have a baseball lover, there’s no better after school program than the Baseball Center NYC! Their 5-Tool After-School Program is designed to teach skill sets to take your rookie ballplayer to an aspiring All-Star.

The “five tool” program highlights throwingcatchinghittingbase-running, and game concentration while kids learn the rules of baseball in a fun and upbeat environment. Grab your bat and let’s play ball!

UWS YMCA: Best for Affordable Programming

One of the greatest hidden gems of the city, the Upper West Side YMCA, offers after school programs for a low or no cost! They feature a curriculum focused around learning enhancement, homework help, health, and sports like swimming, basketball, dance, and football. With a staff to student ration of 1:10, you can be sure your little one is getting lots of attention.

A huge perk of doing after school at the YMCA? Registration is spread out through the year, so if your little one doesn’t need to enroll until the spring, that’s cool with them!

HudsonWay Immersion School: Best for Language Learning

Being bilingual is an advantage, and Upper West Side is home to the perfect spot to send your kids after school to pick up a new language.

The HudsonWay Immersion School has theme-based programs to help kids benefit from language immersion and enrichment activities – such as arts, crafts, and games – all taught in Spanish or Mandarin. With small class sizes taught by experienced, native speaking teachers, the program welcomes elementary-aged children up to age 12.

Arts In Action (Visual Art Program): Best for Budding Artists

The Arts In Action Visual Arts Program is a non-profit that provides an after-school fine arts education. The program functions with the idea that all children are artists and teaches drawing, painting, and sculpting skills. Along with teaching the fundamentals of visual art, the program inspires children to create with confidence. Like the JCC, it offers pick up services from many Upper West Side schools, making it a convenient choice for working parents.

Jewish Community Center in Manhattan: Best for Variety

Variety is the spice of life, right? And that’s exactly what you’ll find at the Jewish Community Center when it comes to after-school programs. Get your kids’ feet wet with swimming classes, tip toe into ballet, or catch up on some homework with after school tutoring. This program is especially great for siblings who have different interests – making it easy for parents or babysitters to pick up the kids at one location.

Another bonus of the Jewish Community Center’s after school program is pick-up services from schools. Just think: Parents don’t have to hire caretakers to shuttle children to a class. If kids arrive to the JCC a bit early, they can participate in the Clubhouse, where they can get homework help or spend time on creative projects.

If you're fortunate enough to live right near one of the more than 1,700 public parks and playgrounds that make New York City among the greenest urban areas on the planet well…. then, that's where we'll probably find you this weekend. Yay spring!. But even though New Yorkers all have their favorite neighborhood spots for promenade strolling, bench sitting, sprinkler frolicking, ball playing, dog running–you name, we got it–there are also plenty of destination parks in this town, well worth packing up the crew and getting on a subway to spend an afternoon. Here are a few of our favorites…

Tourists walking the path at Fort Tryon on a sunny day

Uptown NYC Parks

Starting up in the Bronx, Wave Hill is a plant-lovers' heaven, with some 15 different types of gardens open for leisurely wandering or guided tours. This Riverdale gem plays host to classes and activities with views of the Hudson, and the Palisades Cliffs, that are spectacular. In Upper Manhattan, the pick is Fort Tryon Park which, in addition to hosting a very fun Renaissance Festival each fall, also offers wonderful river vistas and nicely under-populated strolling and picnicking grounds. And though it's hard to believe that anything having to do with Central Park could be called "undiscovered", the amazing Conservatory Gardens at 105th and Fifth never seems to attract much of a crowd, making it one of the prettiest, most peaceful locations in the city. Central Park bonus adventure: take a walk through the North Woods, just past Lasker Rink heading west, which has an improbable waterfall and so many trees that you literally can't see a single building.

Downtown NYC Parks

Going downtown, if you have kids the place to visit is lower Hudson River Park, especially around the Pier 25 area, which has a great little mini-golf course, a skate park, a terrific playground, plus, starting again in May, a beautiful old lighthouse tender (it's a kind of ship), the Lilac, on which you can explore. Keep going south and you'll hit the grassy lawns of Rockefeller Park (talk about spectacular views!), which also hosts many of the River to River concerts in the summer. And don't miss Teardrop Park, tucked away just across the street and home to one of the best slides in the city. Finally, one of my favorite newly developed spots is Brooklyn Bridge Park, from the cool playgrounds of Pier 6 and playing fields/BBQ grills of Pier 5 (and Fornino's rooftop pizza joint and Ample Hills ice cream stand, respectively) to the free kayaking at Pier 2 and rolling lawns of Pier 1.

There is no shortage of toddler, preschool, extracurricular, and adult classes in this great big city of ours, but when you find a local place that consistently delivers high quality (and fun!) instruction at reasonable prices, well… you're in luck.

Take The Art Center, which has been a centerpiece of the Upper East Side for almost twenty years now. They offer an appealing variety of classes, in many different mediums, for everyone from the "Mommy (or Daddy!) and Me" on through to adults of all experience and ability.

Spring Semester Classes at The Art Center

The Spring semester at The Art Center begins the first week of February, and they are currently accepting registrations online and in person. There are lots of toddler spots to choose from on weekday mornings, as well as classes in the afternoon for everyone from preschoolers (general art fun led by the terrific Maxine Stadnik) to grade- and high-schoolers. Among these choices for older kids:

 • Fashion Design
 • Ceramics
 • Manga & Cartooning
 • Teen Portfolio Workshop

Plus, if you register before January 31st, or for multiple classes, you will receive a 10% discount!

Adult Art Classes and Special Occassions

And The Art Center's adult classes are great for those of us who are looking for a little bit of structure, support, camaraderie, and guidance to help realize our creative desires. Plus, it helps to have a pleasant, dedicated space in which to bring your ideas to life, rather than, say, the corner of your bedroom. The Art Center also hosts all-inclusive birthday parties; offers special, all-day classes when schools are closed; and has a full slate of summer programs.

More Information: The Art Center on Upper East Side

The Art Center is located on 75th Street between First and York Avenues. For more information, to register, and to take a look at the full class schedule, visit The Art Center's website!

Art classes are a great activity to promote creativity and expression. Leave a comment to recommend other kid-friendly, creative activities the Glenwood parents community should consider!

Two young kids playing on skateboards in their bathing suits at Warm Up! in New York City

The kids are done with camp… the beach-house vacation is over… the playground sprinklers and such are getting more than little tired… and there's still WEEKS to go before school starts again. What to do with your hot child in the city? Summer Streets, Fete Paradiso, Warm Up!, any of the Brooklyn Flea/Smorgasburg/Smorgasbar iterations… these are all excellent options. And here are five more:

A father and his daughter standing on the side of a river fishing at Harlem Meer

Go Fishing at the Harlem Meer

One of the prettiest sections of Central Park lies to the north, centered around the lovely body of water known as the Harlem Meer. But because sitting still and gazing upon beautiful vistas usually doesn't cut it with kids, there's also the Dana Discovery Center up there, which manages the free "catch-and-release" fishing program. They give you a pole and some bait, your child does the rest. My kids never actually caught anything the times we went, but it always made for a nice adventure. Bonus: take a walk to the Upper West Side afterwards via the dense woods of the Loch, complete with waterfall, one of the only places in Manhattan where you can't see a single building. [Photo by Emily Mason.]

Two women taking a river cruise on the East River Ferry which takes them we cruise downriver under the Williamsburg, Manhattan, and Brooklyn Bridges

Take a "River Cruise" Beneath Three Bridges

As our friend Josie Girl points out in her first-rate blog, the East River Ferry goes to lots of places these days, but one of the best trips is the Williamsburg-to-DUMBO journey. My family plan is usually this: we go on a weekend and do the Brooklyn Flea or Smorgasburg in Williamsburg; then we cruise downriver under the Williamsburg, Manhattan, and Brooklyn Bridges; then we disembark and take a ride on Jane's Carousel in Brooklyn Bridge Park. And get more snacks and treats because why not.

People on the beach of Coney Island for the great Sand Sculpting Contest

Gawk at Astounding Sand Sculptures on Coney Island

There are sand castles (the blobby mounds that I make) and then there are sand castles (the astonishingly intricate sculptures built by people with lots of talent and hours of patience). The former are on display every time I go out to Coney Island; the latter only once a summer, which this year means August 17, as part the great Sand Sculpting Contest. Take a ride on the Cyclone, check out the insane Scream Zone (or the more sedate Luna Park or Wonder Wheel), eat some fried food, marvel at the elaborate, ephemeral creations. [Photo by Asterio Tecson.]

A dinosaur popping out the trees at the Bronx Zoo's Dinosaur Safari for kids

Embark Upon a Dinosaur Safari in the Bronx

The Bronx Zoo has tons of amazing animals of course (including the sooooooo cute new baby rhino and lemurs), but perhaps none so awesome as the two dozen animatronic beasts you'll see on this summer's Dinosaur Safari. They roar! They gnash their teeth! They spit water at you! An easy kid-pleaser? Absolutely. But the Dinosaur Safari is also apparently pretty rigorous in its science, so maybe everyone will learn a thing or three as well as shrieking in delight.

Governor's Island Labor Day activities for the NYC Unicycle Festival. Here are three images of people riding unicycles at the event

Catch All The Fun at the NYC Unicycle Festival

If you're around on Labor Day weekend, head back to Governors Island for everything that's been there all summer PLUS the great NYC Unicycle Festival, happening August 31 and September 1. There will be races, tricks competitions, and demonstrations of several unicycle sports including unicycle basketball and hockey. Watch in wonder or give it try yourself with one of the dozens of unicycles on hand. Check out the Governors Island ferry schedule for transportation!
