Preparedness is key! There are a few gadgets and tools all New Yorkers should have accessible in their Glenwood apartment to be ready for anything. Here are 7 things no one should be living without.

toolkit supplies

A Tool Kit

While this might not be something you’ll be in need of every day (you’re a New Yorker, after all), we promise you’ll be really happy you have easy access to one when the need arises. Planning to hang a new picture? You’ll need a hammer and a nail. Putting together the play-kitchen for your little one? You’ll need ALL the tools!

All-Natural Cleaning Products

There are a few key things a New Yorker NEVER wants to run out of, and we’re going to go ahead and lump them under the umbrella “cleaning products”. Except since you’re New Yorkers, we’re going to go even one better and assume that you’re already using (or are about to switch!) to the all-natural variety. Better for the home, better for the people who live there (pets included!), and better for mama earth. Products that fall under this category can include: laundry detergent, cleaning sprays, dishwashing soap, and of course, plenty of rags, sponges, and paper towels to do all the heavy scrubbing. While we’re at it, we’ll go ahead and throw toilet paper into this category, too! The company Grove Collaborative is an easy spot to order all your goods from–they offer free shipping, right to your front door, Downtown all the way to the Upper East Side!

Drive up a circular driveway with fountains, landscaped entrance and gardens, and be greeted by 24-hour door service. Relax on a sun deck and enjoy upscale amenities. A Power Strip

Even if you don’t have a use for a power strip right now, per se, there’ss so many opportunities when one will be needed, and you’ll be thrilled you have one handy! From having a central place to plug in the entire family’s smart phones and electronic devices, to having an easy way to connect the TV to your Apple TV device, while still not losing functionality of Amazon’s Alexa, these little things take up practically no room but are super useful.

Batteries

How many times have you been in the middle of a Netflix binge when your remote control dies? Or your toddler gets a new toy from Grandma that requires Double A’s (but of course doesn’t come with them)? To prevent last minute runs to Duane Reade, stack up on batteries of varying sizes and keep them in a drawer where everyone in the house has access (except the toddlers, of course!)

light bulb

Light Bulbs

…Because have you ever been in the bathroom before when the lightbulb decides to blow? You’ll be so happy you had the foresight to keep a few spares hidden in a drawer!

A Plunger

Hopefully it’s not something you’ll need to reach for often, but imagine your relief when it’s there, totally handy, in your time of need! Plus, in the case of having visitors or out of town guests this is always a much appreciated tool to have tucked away in the bathroom in the case of an unexpected emergency. It will save much embarrassment for your guests!

fresh produce

The Ingredients To Throw Together A Quick Meal

Whether you’re a New Yorker who orders in all your meals to your Westside Grand Tier apartment, eats them all out, or is a gourmet chef who prepares a three course feast every evening, there’ss no denying the beauty of keeping a few ingredients on hand to throw together a quick and easy meal for those times you don’t feel like eating out or cooking something elaborate. The great part about this is it doesn’t have to be anything complex–from keeping your favorite brand of frozen pizza in the freezer to fresh veggies from the Farmer’s Market to throw together a salad in your fridge, it’s a satisfying feeling to whip up something quick when that hangry (i.e. hungry + angry) feeling starts to hit!

But where is that even possible in New York City? Rooftops, Parks, Restaurants, a boat... just to name a few. Check out our complete list of top places to enjoy a flick in the great outdoors.

Dim the lights, grab some popcorn, and watch your favorite movies under the Manhattan sky! Summertime is filled with outdoor events, and we’re ready to take advantage of each and every scene. From the largest rooftop terraces, to popular parks with a view, check out NYC’s best outdoor movie opportunities this summer.

Movies and chairs setup in Central Park

Movies In The Parks

Movies in the parks, dubbed “Movies Under the Stars”, are one of the most loved NYC summer rituals. Not only are they fabulous ways to motivate yourself to get off the couch (away from Netflix) and to enjoy a film under the moonlight, but they are also hosted by the NYC Parks Department and absolutely free. There’s a huge selection to choose from, with films happening in all five boroughs of NYC basically every evening of summer 2018. We’ve collected the ones happening in Glenwood neighborhoods that we’re most excited about! All of the movies in the park begin at 8pm, however, it’s suggested to arrive by 7:30pm at the latest to secure a spot. Blankets are allowed, as well as food and drinks in non-glass containers.

Exploring the Upper East Side

With the Second Ave Subway & Central Park within walking distance, the Upper East Side seems too good to be true! Find a luxury apartment at an affordable price.
  • On June 9th, take in one of the most beloved classic films of all times, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Held at Randall’s Island Park, this film is super easy for Upper East Side residents to get to. You can jump on the 6 train to 103rd Street and walk, or take a cab/Uber to the Ward’s Island Bridge, which connects you to the lower end of the park where the movies are shown.
  • On June 13th, bring the kiddos for a showing of Despicable Me 3 on the Upper East Side’s very own St. Catherine’s Park. Come early for ice cream, popcorn, face painters, and activities related to the film. Located at 67th and 1st Avenue, the park is close to many Glenwood buildings, such as The Fairmont.
  • On July 11th, enjoy a throwback to a classic, Who Framed Roger Rabbit? on the Westside’s Pier 1. Sunset over the Hudson River is a bonus!
  • On July 13th, residents living Downtown who don’t mind a short cab or Uber ride will appreciate Romantics Anonymous, held on the Old Bandshell Lawn in Tompkins Square Park. This film is part of #FilmsOnTheGreen, which hosts free French films with English subtitles. Sounds like the perfect date night pick to us!

Close-up of popcorn and draft beer

Movies On A Boat

Another fabulous outdoor movie option is watching the films on the deck of the Intrepid! You’ll be sitting on the ship’s flight deck, with a beautiful view of the Hudson River and Manhattan skyline while you watch the movies. Admission tickets are free, but are distributed on a first-come basis, so make sure you’re standing in line at 7pm when the flight deck opens. Movies begin at sunset.

Or, if you don’t fancy the idea of waiting in line and taking your chances, you can become a member of the Intrepid Museum and secure your tickets to the show ahead of time online. Here’s the lineup for the 2018 season:

  • June 29: Wonder Woman
  • July 13th: Friday the 13th
  • July 27th: Dunkirk
  • August 10th: Ghostbusters
  • August 24th: Community Choice Pick (You can vote on their website for the film to be shown on this evening!)

We’re sure Westside residents will particularly love the convenience of these films. It’s particularly close to Crystal Green.

Movies on the rooftop at Yotel

Movies On A Rooftop

Like many things in life, movies are just more fun when watched on a rooftop! This year, you can head to Midtown’s Skylawn at Embassy Suites by Hilton for a summer of fabulous films, hosted by the Rooftop Cinema Club. The season opens on June 1st, and hosts four nights of films a week throughout the season, including favorites such as Mean Girls and Dirty Dancing. The slight difference with this movie watching experience is that you will all be wearing headphones to hear the sound of the film. You’ll have comfy seats to relax in, well worth the ticket price. Since these films are in venues serving alcohol, they are for 21+, adults only. Don’t worry, NYC parents. We think your kids will enjoy movies in the park better anyway. More room to run!

The days are getting warmer, the sun is shining longer, and there is a feeling of creativity in the air. If residents of Glenwood are feeling inspired to learn a new thing or two this season, check out our five favorite spring courses around Manhattan. From the Westside to Midtown East (and everywhere in between), we’ve scooped up the classes we’re most excited about this spring.

A bowl of pea soup with garnish

For Foodie Lovers: Souping Is The New Juicing

The National Gourmet Institute is hosting “Souping is the New Juicing” on June 21st from 6:30pm to 9:30pm. The course is $140, and will be held at their Flatiron location. The course recognizes the hundreds (thousands?!) of potential spring and summertime soups available for cooking, and will school you on how to create soups that support your immune system and tingle your taste buds. By the end of the course, you’ll be able to create your own soup base with healthy ingredients. Popular spring soups you can expect to create and taste are Watermelon Gazpacho, Chilled Carrot and Turmeric Soup with Scallion Oil, Summer Minestrone, and Lemon-Lentil Soup With Mint and Cilantro, among many others.

And if “souping” isn’t your cup of tea, but you love the idea of learning a new springtime cooking method, make sure to visit The National Gourmet’s website, as there is a huge array of classes available to take all season long.

For Photography Enthusiasts: Night Photography In Central Park

New York City Photo Safari is hosting the perfect $100 course for photography enthusiasts who also happen to be incredibly passionate about the city we call home: Central Park At Night! On June 2nd, join them from 8:30pm to 10:30pm as they teach the art of composition skills at night as well as the issues related to taking pictures in low light conditions. Not only will you score some amazing photos of your city (that you can then print and give as gifts), but this skill will come in handy anytime you find yourself needing to take a photo after sunset.

The course is appropriate for all levels, from beginners to advanced photographers. Since it takes place in the evening, it could also be a great iconic date night to take your significant other on! You’ll be meeting at Central Park South and 5th Avenue, which makes it ideal for both residents living in Midtown East’s The Bristol as well as the Upper East Side’s The Fairmont. And if you can’t make it for their June 2nd class, fear not. It repeats on June 16th, July 2nd, July 14th, and July 28th.

Whether your side hustle includes an Etsy shop, private yoga instruction, or wedding photography, you need to be on your social media game these days to promote it. You will leave the class with a toolbox of strategies and tips to excel at your Instagram game, and have more customers/clients for your small business by the end of summer! The class will be July 16th from 6pm to 9pm, and at a price point of only $35, this is one anyone with a side hustle can’t afford to miss.

For Those Who Love To Entertain: Flower Arranging With Store Bought Bouquets

If you love to entertain at your Glenwood home, the New York Botanical Garden’s “Flower Arranging With Store Bought Bouquets” is the perfect course for you! You’ll learn to create your own professional-looking arrangements with economical, store-bought bouquets, that can come right from your neighborhood corner bodega for $5 a bushel. You can then display these in your home, making a very economical display look like a million bucks from the florist’s shop!

The NYBG’s Midtown location for classes is very convenient for Midtown East Glenwood residents. The next class is June 26th from 6pm to 8pm and is $100.

For Those Who Have A Trip To France Planned: French For Beginners

Whether you have a trip to Paris planned, are looking for a fun new hobby and skill to embark on over the next few months, or want to impress your French speaking significant other, the “French for Beginners” class at Idlewild Books is the perfect way to make it all happen! Not only will you be learning a beautiful language in an adorable book store, but they will be focusing on real life conversation, so the French you walk away with from the beginning will actually be applicable to real life and helpful on your language learning journey. The class goes from July 7th through August 18th and is $295.

Don't let the summer pass you by without taking the opportunity to hit up a beach & soak in the sun. While you are there, don't forget to dig in at any of these 5 beachside restaurants.

Most people don’t associate New York City with breezy beachside eateries, but we’re here to tell you–you can have your cake (NYC!) and eat it too (the beach!) There are tons of beaches surrounding NYC, many of which are accessible via public transportation. Packing a picnic is a nice idea, but as you’re carrying beach gear on the subway, the last thing you want to do is schlep a cooler full of food and drinks along. To help you enjoy your day at the beach, we’ve rounded up 5 of our favorite beachside restaurants for you to enjoy this summer.

If You’re Going To Rockaway Beach

The Playland Motel feels like Williamsburg transported itself to Queens, but the hipster vibe lives on! They’re cool, laid back, and the breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus are fabulous for Instagram photos! Portions here are huge, making it the perfect spot to go after hitting the waves all day. The menu features beach favorites such as lobster rolls, beer steamed mussels, and vegetarian gumbo. Not to mention, with a cocktail named the Painkiller, you know you’re in good hands!

Are You Visiting Brighton Beach?

If so, you’ll have to stop by Randazzo’s Clam Bar. Opened in 1932, this fourth generation family restaurant serves up some classic beach favorites.  Whether you order their fried calamari or famous red or white chowder, the food draws people in and keeps them coming back. The vibe is super casual, making it the perfect spot to wind down a sandy and salty day on Brighton Beach.

Headed to Fire Island?

Surf’s Out is noted as Fire Island’s best restaurant for lunch and dinner. With live music, Taco Tuesdays, and Shipwrecked Sundays (i.e. a bottomless brunch with a live DJ blasting all your favorite summertime songs for $40!), it’s easy to see why it’s such a hit. Menu standouts are grilled brie cheese (yes please!), classic mahi mahi, and their “trimmed beach grass”, known as “salad” for New Yorkers. If you’re looking to hold an event with a beachy feel, Surf’s Out offers catering options, too!

Drift Into Orchard Beach

Original Crab Shanty is located in City Island, Bronx, and is a local favorite to stop by after a long day on the hot sand. Serving the best Italian seafood in the Bronx since 1977 (just look at their website!), this laid back beachy spot has every kind of seafood and pasta you could imagine!

Stay Local in Coney Island

Nathan’s Famous may be a bit of a cliche, but just like how you can’t go to Times Square without going to Junior’s for a slice of the best cheesecake ever (at least I can’t!), you kinda can’t go to Coney without going to Nathan’s. The fare here is super basic, franks and french fries and all the fixings, but it’s really the perfect spot to grab some food and stroll down the boardwalk before hitting up The Cyclone.

5 Upper West Side Boozy Brunch Spots https://www.glenwoodnyc.com/manhattan-living/5-upper-west-side-boozy-brunch-spots/ Fri, 22 Jul 2016 14:40:27 +0000 http://glenwoodstage.wpengine.com/?p=15873 Brunch is the most sought after meal of the day. But Boozy Brunches have become all the rage. Weekends are just not the same without going out on a sunday morning with friends to get a little buzz on while shoving your face with Nutella stuffed french toast. Here are 5 boozy brunch spots in the Upper West Side to start your day off right!

As any New Yorker will tell you, brunch is somewhat of a NYC institution. In fact, we don’t just use the word to describe a meal between breakfast and lunch, but rather as a verb: “Where are we brunching this weekend?” We, my friends, have you covered on that one! Below is a roundup of 5 boozy brunches for you to enjoy on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. Mimosa refill, anyone?

Calle Ocho

If you’re a fan of sangria (and food with a Latin vibe), this is your spot! While you pay per item for food, your brunch includes unlimited sangria during the course of your meal. And we’re not just talking the boring varieties of “red” vs. “white” sangria, oh, no. Calle Ocho has eight different sangria flavors, ranging from Havana Banana (think Coconut Rum, Crème de Banana, Coconut, Lychees) to the Spanish Harlem (a mix of Dark Rum, Cinnamon, Peach, Mandarins). Is it Sunday yet?

Arte Cafe

While the Arte Cafe doesn’t have an all inclusive deal, it does offer great deals on pitchers of your breakfast drink of choice: bellini, mimosa, and sangria carafes go for $18, Bloody Mary’s or Screwdrivers $20, or a bottle of champagne $18…which, as us New Yorkers know all too well, is typically what ONE drink at a trendy restaurant goes for these days! The menu offers your standard breakfast fare (eggs and french toast, anyone?), or if you’re feeling in the mood for Italian, there’s plenty of that to choose from, as well. And a bonus for nice weather brunching? There’s outdoor seating!

Regional

The boozy brunch deal at Regional goes like so: buy a meal and one beverage, and all refills of said beverage are on them! This may just be one of the best deals yet, as meals range around $12 (for a pizza, pasta dish, or typical breakfast fare), and Bloody’s and mimosas go for $8…so that’s $20, all in! We’ll take it!

Bistro Ten 18

So you said you want all inclusive? Bistro Ten 18 heard you loud and clear! They offer their weekend brunch with unlimited Bloody’s and mimosas (plus food) for $22.50. Now, this doesn’t apply to everything on the menu, but there’s enough choices to pick from that go with the deal. If a fresh, local, American bistro is what you’re craving, this is the spot.

Amity Hall

Saving the best for last? Well, if you’re a fan of Nutella stuffed french toast like I am, then yes, this is the spot you want to go to! Amity Hall offers an unlimited brunch with Bloody’s and mimosas and delicious dishes for $29.95. Now if only they’d make the Nutella french toast unlimited!

Spring 2016 trends for men and women

We can’t say when the weather will reflect the Spring season, and that’s why it’s vital to prepare your Spring wardrobe ASAP! The Spring 2016 fashion trends from New York to London and Milan to Paris all brought a variety of styles for both men and women, and we’ve narrowed it down to 5 styles that can work for anyone. From 50’s inspired shirts and bomber jackets (gentlemen) to sculptural pleats and striped apparel (ladies), amplify your look using modern shapes, traditional colors, and a range of unanticipated accessories. Be bold, stay ahead of the curve, and we guarantee you’ll turn heads when you walk down the streets of NYC!

For Men

Bomber Jackets

Unsure which jacket you should choose from your closet, or still wearing the same jacket you’ve had for the past five years? Take a hint from the trending menswear Spring/Summer 2016 collections and invest in a 50’s bomber jacket. It’s versatile for casual days and makes you cool and comfortable at all times. Channel this style with a variety of new colors and materials available to keep things more contemporary, such as the gray jacket above. To show how multifunctional it is, models wore it in a variety of ways: under suits (our personal favorite), as a light top layer, and tied around the waist.

The Fifties Are Back

It seems like grandpa knew what he was doing! Make the crowd swoon and feel relaxed through baggy polos and textured retro fifties shirts, as portrayed in the runway collections of Lanvin (photo above), Louis Vuitton, and many more distinguished designers. Balance the look out with tailored trousers and Ray-Ban’s Wayfarer sunglasses for a true fifties vibe. Most importantly, contrast colors to maintain that polished spring look.

Male model wearing white trousers

White Chinos

In case you didn’t know, chinos are a certain style of trousers having an American military origin. Less formal than dress pants and more dressy than casual jeans, these pants are made of a cotton or cotton-blend material that allows it to be dressed up or down.

The amazing thing about white is the number of items it’s compatible with, and white chinos are in this season! Match them with dark-colored navy shirts, bright-colored jacket, and dusty brown boots and belts. Because of the current ‘sweater weather,’ you can also style the white pants with traditional cable-knit and patterned sweaters for a preppy-vintage look. When it’s time for the weekend, go for a classic look by combining white denim with washed out chambray button down shirts.

For the full Spring 2016 Men’s collection, go through this riveting slideshow by Vogue. You’ll find the latest designer clothes and accessories at MR PORTER, the popular online shopping destination for men.

For Women

Pleats by Oscar de la Renta at Spring 2016 fashion week
Designer: Oscar de la Renta

Pleats

Spring 2016 fashion week definitely proved that pleats aren’t only for those preps or ‘girly girls’ anymore. Lately, designers are transforming silhouettes with sculptural pleats, thus adding elegance a touch of flirtation, all with the bend of the fabric. Plus, they totally give off the season’s positive essence, especially if you wear brightly colored and floral patterned pleats. Oscar de la Renta is the perfect inspiration, with his creative treatment of pleats and ruffles in this alluring outfit above.

Stripes

You can never go wrong with stripes, and this year’s fashion shows revealed the classic pattern on suit jackets, eye-grabbing dresses, silk shirts, and almost every other clothing item you can think of. Whether you’re meeting with a client or partying at a rooftop bar, you’ll blend right in and even get them talking. In honor of Spring, we suggest adding bright color stripes to your closet.

It’s no question New York City is the destination for exquisite dining. The abundance of restaurants, cafes, and pubs (some of which share the same cuisine) that line the streets makes it difficult for a foodie to choose just one. Luckily, our new “Restaurant of the Monnth” category will help you avoid this obstacle. For March, we explored the underrated food scene of the Upper West Side and fell under the spell of The Ribbon! Read why we loved this restaurant, and visit it on your next brunch, lunch, or dinner to understand why it’s ‘the epitome of Upper West Side dining’.

The Ribbon is the first restaurant from the Blue Ribbon chain on 72nd Street, just West of Central Park. Founders Bruce and Eric Bromberg created the boundless modern neighborhood restaurant in order to provide a genuine dining experience. It’s the ideal place for a date, hanging out with friends, having a good bite while watching the game, and basically any other activity. Everyone is welcome at this upscale, spacious venue with an industrial décor.

There’s plenty of substance at The Ribbon to guarantee a very fun outing. You’ll receive nothing less than five-star service. The menu is full of superb dishes suited to all preferences, including spit-roasted meats, seafood as well as Blue Ribbon classics. Not to forget, each item is prepared with enough of a twist to make it unique. So, none of your friends or family will have a reason to complain, and you can have a memorable meal in a pleasant environment with a marvelous spirits selection. In case you’re overwhelmed with the choices, here are our top five platters:

Deviled Eggs

A divine starter, no doubt! You can choose one or all three of the following varieties: Fried Oysters with Pickled Jalapenos, Smoked Salmon With Trout Roe, and Pickled Peppers with Olive Oil Mayo. Personally, the first option trumps all!

Beet and Goat Cheese Salad at The Ribbon in NYC

Beet and Goat Cheese Salad

We all need room for a little green in our diet, and like many others, we found this salad to be the tastiest choice. You’ll detect a satisfying sweet and salty taste while munching on watercress, endives, oranges, and candied walnuts.

The Ox Burger at The Ribbon in NYC

The Ox Burger

It’s not American cuisine without a burger. Savor this gigantic burger, covered in oxtail marmalade, and topped with a poached egg atop challah toast. Don’t be shocked when you get stars in your eyes, and end up having beautiful dreams of the burger in monster size.

Vegetable Risotto

To those enamored with Italian cuisine and lacking some vegetables in their diet, voila! Italian, creamy rice, and vegetables. Need we say more? Resist the urge to “mmmm;” no one likes a noisy eater.

Half Amish Chicken

Exceedingly juicy, simple chicken dish topped with mustard, Riesling white grape, and all the garlic imaginable. It’d a crime to order this just once!

Private Dinning or Events

Try out the array of private dining options if you’re yearning for a homelike setting. The Private Dining Room is known to have one of the best round tables in all of Manhattan, is available for lunch and dinner Monday through Sunday, and fits most group sizes – from a small gathering of ten people, to a cocktail party for 200 across the whole restaurant. You’ll easily spot an old rock ‘n roll jukebox, TVs at the bar that don’t clash with your dining experience, antique chandeliers, and a splendid mixture of brown liquor. See the link above for details on the four offered rooms (Arnold’s Whisky Room, Dining Room East, Main Dining Room, and Bar Room & Dining Room) then reserve the one tailored to your preferences and party size.

While you’re at it, define your personal style by shopping at boutique shops. You can find everything from retro and contemporary clothing to modern decor and vintage records. For a great shopping experience, here are top 5 boutique shops you should visit in the Upper West Side, one of Manhattan’s most luxurious and diverse neighborhoods.

BOC New York

Ladies, this spacious, industrial-chic boutique along Columbus Avenue is surely the best clothing and accessories spot for you! Inspired by the Upper West Side crowd, BOC New York hosts a wide-range of  emerging and established designers (including Atea Oceanie, Philippe Model, The Great, Diega, Veronica Beard, Lola, etc.). Opened in August 2013, BOC New York offers fashion-forward and trendy items ranging from exclusive accessory brands to high-end luxury labels.

In 2014, the shop was named  Village Voice’s “Best Clothing Store for Women” in NYC. To expand their unique retail boutique, BOC New York launched their online store in 2015  sharing their NYC style and love for fashion worldwide. Stop by the store and say Hello, or check out the online shop. We recommend browsing through the “WHAT’S NEW” and “SALE” tabs to mix affordable with trendy.

Mint is ideal for ladies looking for reasonably-priced items and exceptionally designed Spring clothes. If you want to invest in a casual Spring dress, look no further. Our top picks would have to be the Soho Mixer Dress and Rush Hour Maxi by Yumi Kim. Why stop there? Look through the numerous tops, skirts, shorts, rompers, knits, denim, elegant handbags (especially from Rebecca Minkoff), and much more items. Join the mailing list to stay up to date with the new arrivals and the latest trends.

WEST NYC

It’s not Spring without new sneakers and other sportswear! Any ‘sneakerhead’ and sports enthusiast should definitely check out WEST NYC, a unisex sports boutique shop on W 72nd Street. Whoever thought luxurious meant dressy couldn’t be more wrong. Get over your worn out kicks with Asics, Adidas, and Converse sneakers. If you prefer boots or moccasins, go with Danner, Clark’s, and Timberland. The prices are similar to the usual figures you see for each brand, but the quality doesn’t differ. Moreover, you can purchase T-Shirts, sweatshirts, outerwear, and hats/caps.

Laytner’s Linen & Home

So you’ve upgraded your clothes collection, but what about your apartment? Shop from Laytner’s Linen & Home so your home can be Spring themed! With offices around the city, Laytner’s has been the destination for New Yorkers’ linen and bedding needs for two generations. As seen on the website, item categories are divided into Bedding, Bath, Home Accents, Furniture, Dining, and much more. They describe their products as “sophisticated yet always comfortable and practical”.

A good tip for apartment decorating is vibrant patterns and bright colors that blend in with your apartment decor. Install green shower and living room curtains (blue is a suitable choice too), reveal your floral bed cover, add a flower vase in the living room (on the dining table, kitchen counter, or a wooden stool), and change your table linen.

Westsider Books & Westsider Records

Last but certainly not least, bibliophiles and music aficionados should head over to Westsider Books (81st and Broadway) and Westsider records (West 72nd Street) if they’re looking to buy, sell, or trade their old books and records. The inventory of books, music, films, and plays is almost unlimited, since there are over 30,000 music records under $200. Seize the chance to learn about various subjects (graphic design, children’s books, fiction & literature, etc.) and art forms (art books, musical scores, classical music, rock & roll, etc.).

The Spring season is finally sneaking up on us. Although it’s getting a bit chilly at night, the weather is generally warm and sunny. After all, New York wouldn’t be the same without some irregular weather changes. While March tends to focus on St. Patrick’s Day events, flower shows, and Easter celebrations, April is filled with several diverse, Spring-themed activities to guarantee that no New Yorker is left out. From beer festivals and park events to theater performances and a popular film festival, here is a recap of things to do this Spring.

At the Parks

Admirer of Japanese culture or unfamiliar with it? Welcome Spring at the 35th Sakura Matsuri, Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s annual cherry blossom festival from April 30th to May 1st! The cherry-blossom fever won’t stop, as the two-day fair includes more than 60 events and performances praising traditional and contemporary Japanese culture. To honor the end of Hanami (the Japanese seasonal tradition of blossom appreciation), there will be a cosplay fashion show, bands playing traditional tunes, dance performances, and obviously lots of pink-and-white petals. Tickets are free for children (under 12) and BBG members, but cost $25 for adults and $20 for students and seniors (65 and over). Visit the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens website to purchase tickets.

Central Park also has something to offer. German artist Isa Genzken took the liberty of revealing her gigantic display of 34 x 28 feet orchids (photo above) on March 1st at Doris C. Freedman Plaza, the entrance to the southeastern section of Central Park showcasing a series of installations authorized by Public Art Fund. Knowing the white orchid is mass-produced and open to interpretation, Genzken aims to show an idealized version of the plant that represents our generation. Not to forget, the art piece was installed last year at the Venice Biennale. You can see it any time until August 21st, so check out the Public Art Fund website for more info.

Cirque Du Soleil: PARAMOUR

The dream has become a reality: After wooing audiences around the world for years, Cirque Du Soleil is setting foot in Broadway with its groundbreaking and touching play, PARAMOUR. Starting April 16th, a 38-member group of actors, dancers, aerialists, acrobats, and jugglers join to tell an exciting tale of a pretty young actress in Hollywood’s Golden Age. First you need to make reservations, then prepare yourself for a roller-coaster ride of emotions. Hurry up to benefit from the $55 ticket price!

Tribeca Film Festival

Film lovers, you certainly don’t want to miss this: The 15th Tribeca Film Festival (founded in 2002 by Jane Rosenthal, Robert De Niro and Craig Hatkoff) returns to New York City to cast the light on local indie films, documentaries, and foreign films. Audiences will see the newest films from well-known actors and the best from rising filmmakers. Watch two sisters adjusting to adulthood in Adult Life Skills, a mother and daughter becoming stronger together in Katie Holmes’ directional debut All We Had, and the street art world illuminated in The Banksy Job. The Spring festival will take place across Lower Manhattan from April 13-24.

Bacon and Beer Classic

The title is enough to stir your appetite! Restaurants (e.g. Tuk Tuk Go, Tres Carnes) and breweries from all five boroughs unite in this festival from April 22-23, so you can enjoy 50+ bacon-infused dishes by the best local chefs in addition to over 100 craft beers by local, regional, and national breweries. Moreover, you’ll get to explore the iconic Citifield sports stadium on a non-game weekend, partake in various games (giant Jenga, bungee run, posing at photo booth, branding yourself with bacon and beer-inspired tattoos, etc.), prove your unbreakable bond with pork in the infamous Bacon Eating Contest, and vote at the People’s Choice Booth for your favorite bacon-infused platter. Interested? Buy your tickets now!
