Winter is coming, are you ready? Today we will cover tips for preparing your apartment for winter, such as ways to make the apartment feel cozy and warm, as well as preparing indoor activities for the inevitable NYC snow day.

Cozy throw blanket, tea and book open on a couch

Bring Out The Throw Blankets!

It’s the perfect time to transition your Glenwood apartment decor, getting it cozy for the upcoming months of chilly weather. A simple way to do this is to bring your throw blankets out of storage, and drape them over your sofa and beds for a layer of extra snuggles. Whether you’re staying in for the night watching Netflix or huddling under the covers in bed with a good book, you’ll appreciate the warmth!

If you don’t have throw blankets in storage from last season, head to your local Pottery Barn or West Elm to pick up some seasonal ones. They have locations located on the Westside, quite near The Encore and Hawthorn Park.

Add Seasonal Scents

Fall and winter scents like cinnamon, and clove spread out on a table

There’s nothing quite like walking into an apartment that smells like baked apple pie or warm pumpkin bread. While having these items baking in the oven 24/7 is not an actual reality, you can certainly incorporate essential oils and melting wax diffusers to create the essence all season long! Head to your local fragrance store, such as Diptyque on the Upper East Side, and pick up a few of their seasonal scents. Placed strategically around your apartment, such as the kitchen, living room, bedroom, and guest bathroom, your home will be smelling like a winter sanctuary in no time.

Prepare Indoor Games

Board games spread out on a table

Indoor games are just as important for the wintertime whether you have kiddos or are in a house of adults. When the nights get dark at 5pm and the weather is snowy out, it’s nice to be prepared with inside activities.

For homes with children, consider putting together an arts and craft kit. Depending on the ages of your kids, these can include things such as play dough, finger paint, sand art, coloring books, and jewelry making supplies.

And for homes with adults, load up on timeless board games! Cult favorites include Monopoly, Scrabble, Life, Uno, and of course a deck of cards. These games are good for most all ages (sans the extremely little tots), which make them perfect for the whole family to get in on. And don’t discount the pleasure a puzzle can bring, too…having it sit out on the coffee table to be worked on little by little throughout the season is a great way to pass the time.

Load Up On Warming Foods And Snacks

The last thing you want to have to think about during a snowstorm is running to the grocery store. Prepare ahead and load up on cozy wintertime goodies, such as hot chocolate and marshmallows, ingredients for a homemade soup or stew, and buttery popcorn pouches for popping during Christmas movie marathons. For those of you who live at The Pavilion, the food shop located in-house at the shopping arcade means you don’t even have to leave the building to stock up!

Pick Up Seasonal and New Release Books

A stack of books opened on a blue background

You can call your local bookstore and purchase a book for curbside order and pick up a huge stack of books with seasonal themes of the holidays or wintertime in general. These are great to keep in your children’s rooms to read before bedtime, and to really incorporate the season into their lives.

Also, check out the New York Times review on new release books that interest you and pick those books up for yourself! You won’t be without a book on hand all season long, which makes those cold Saturday afternoons pleasurable. Cuddling up with your throw blanket, hot cocoa, pumpkin spice candle, and book as you watch the snow fall outside your window. Wintertime perfection!

If there’s one thing you just have to do in New York City every winter, it’s ice skating between the skyscrapers. Skating is one of those classic, must-experience traditions that tourists and true New Yorkers alike share. Whether you are an ice skating lover or have been recently inspired after watching Netflix’s new popular show, Spinning Out, NYC has so many choices of rinks to choose from! If you’re not too sure which rink best suits you, here’s a list of our favorite ice skating rinks for you to try out!

Winter Village at Bryant Park

Imagine this: An ice skating rink right smack in the heart of Midtown East. Better yet, it’s three times the size of Rockefeller Center at 17,000 square feet! Winter Village at Bryant Park is one of the most festive spots to really get into the winter spirit. With hot cocoa and seasonal shops surrounding the rink, residents of Glenwood’s nearby Paramount Tower and The Bamford are close to a true winter wonderland!

Ice Skating at Rockefeller Center

Of course we cannot leave out the most iconic ice skating rink in Manhattan!

From the famous tree in the background, to the New York City Rockettes around the corner, The Rink at Rockefeller Center is one of the most memorable spots in town. With room for only 150 skaters at a time, lace up your skates and check out the rink’s ice time schedule. Open daily from 8:30 am to 12 midnight! Here are a few options to make your trip to The Rink one to remember:

  • Make a VIP skate reservation
  • Plan an engagement on the ice (guarantee you’ll see at least two!)
  • Afternoon tea and skating reservations

The Rink at Brookfield Place

If you’re looking for an ice skating rink that will give you a once-in-a-lifetime skate and a show, skid over to The Rink at Brookfield Place in Downtown Manhattan. This cool spot is nearby Glenwood buildings Barclay Tower and Liberty Plaza, and offers public skating, private lessons, as well as musical skating performances!

The Standard Ice Rink

Sharpen up your blades for a winter thrill of gliding around The Standard Ice Rink. Located on the High Line, The Standard Hotel’s miniature “nightlife” rink is known to stay open late. Stocked with hot cider, black and white hot chocolate, and warm waffles to keep you fueled to skate your heart out. Skaters of all ages are welcome, but this spot is geared more towards adults as the night (or the party) goes on!

Sky Rink at Chelsea Piers

Designed more for hockey leagues and a top-notch figure skating school, the indoor Sky Rink at Chelsea Piers does open its nearly perfect ice for general skating. General skating is open every day of the week besides Wednesday, and skaters of all ages are invited to twirl, jump, and glide.  If your child, friend, or family members can’t stay off the ice, Sky Rink offers party packages for skaters to celebrate their day!

Alas, it’s the most wonderful time of the year! Being in NYC makes this season extra special, what with the window dressings and twinkling decor and wealth of fun and festive events to attend all around the city. Below, we’ve corralled a list of things to do throughout the month which promise to bring equal helpings of good tidings and cheer. Happy holidays, Glenwood residents!

The Yorkville Nutcracker: December 6th-9th, 2018

The Nutcracker is a December institution in the city, but you know what’s better than the traditional Nutcracker? The Yorkville Nutcracker! This performance is happening on the Upper East Side, and sets the ballet to New York backgrounds, such as a holiday party at Gracie Mansion, dancing at the Crystal Palace, and skating in Central Park. Dancers in this performance range in age from 5 to 85, so it’s truly a performance for New Yorkers of all ages to enjoy. Tickets are $65, or $55 for seniors. The theater is a quick jaunt from The Fairmont and The Lucerne.

Merry Tuba Christmas: December 9th, 2018

If you’re looking for the perfect day to visit the Rockefeller Christmas Tree in Midtown East, consider going on December 9th at 3:30pm, which is when the Merry Tuba Christmas performance will be taking place. The day is truly a magical one, as hundreds of tenor and bass tuba players from all across the country will congregate outside on The Rink at Rockefeller Center to play holiday favorites. The crowd is encouraged to sing along, making this a caroling event you’ll never forget. And the best part? It’s completely free, and perfect for all ages.

Unsilent Night: December 16th, 2018

An annual tradition, Unsilent Night happens every year Downtown and is a spin on traditional caroling. Instead, you will download the music onto your phone or smart device before heading out (or get super retro and use a boombox and one of their cassette tapes!), and then play it on cue with the crowd, which will then walk from Washington Square Park to Tompkins Square Park. It creates a luminous soundscape played by the audience and carried through city streets…it may just become your favorite December tradition yet! The event is happening on December 16th at 6pm and is free and open to all ages.

Ice skating in NYC at the Bryant Park ice skating rink.

The Bryant Park Winter Village Has Opened

Eager for the season to start, Bryant Park's now-traditional Winter Village–the centerpiece of which is the nicely-sized skating rink–went up this year the day BEFORE Halloween, but now that it's actually been chilly for a couple of days in a row, our thoughts turn to gliding around the ice for… for at least long enough to earn a hot chocolate or two. I went to check out this season's iteration of the decade-old holiday ritual last Saturday, a perfect day for skating with sunny skies but a nip in the air, and found festive crowds on the ice, wandering in and out of the temporary gift shops, and eating and drinking from one of the many food booths. Here's the full scoop about the Bryant Park Skating Rink and Holiday Shops 2015…

Ice skaters at the Bryant Park free ice skating rink in NYC.

Bryant Park Ice Skating

The ice looked great at the Bryant Park Rink, with none of the slushiness that had plagued the attraction during the "heat wave" earlier this month, though beware: it's supposed to hit 60 again this week. Ice skating is definitely more pleasant when it's not freezing, but you do actually need ICE. Anyway, the huge holiday crowds of tourists aren't here yet, so even in the early afternoon there was no line to get in and plenty of room on the rink for all of your Beillmann spins and double axels and, uh, falling down. As always, ice skating at the Bryant Park Rink is free, with these qualifiers: skate rentals are $19 from now through to the New Year; bag check (which you have to do if you're going on the ice) is $10; and if you need to buy a lock for your free locker (to stow your shoes), that'll be $9. Plan accordingly.

Holiday shopping at the Bryant Park Winter Village shops in NYC.

Bryant Park Holiday Shops

These days, of course, skating is only a small part of the public park's activities during the holiday season, the others being shopping for things no one needs but that might make a decent gift, and eating. The Holiday Shops in 2015 are the now-standard assortment of silly items aimed at the tourist trade (nothing wrong that), and some nice jewelry kiosks (like Jessica DeCarlo's). The food booths are really where it's at as far as I'm concerned, with Top Arepa, Enfes Turkish Food, La Sonrisa Empanadas, and the huge Max Brenner Chocolate Bar among the many standouts. The two-story Celius bar and restaurant is back again as well, which is always good for a goof. It's been ten years now that the Bryant Park Rink and Holiday Market has taken over this patch of Midtown, and however over-commercialized it may seem today, it's still one of the prettiest places to skate in the city.

The Bryant Park Rink will be open through March 6, 2016, with skating every day from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. The Holiday Shops stick around through January 3. Visit the website for more details about the Bryant Park Winter Village.

Crowd of people joining in on the Make Music Winter parade

Every summer for seven years now, Make Music New York has staged the "largest music event ever to grace Gotham", a one-day sonic extravaganza with more than a thousand free outdoor concerts in public spaces all over the five boroughs. Concerts vary from high school bands, choirs and enthusiastic amateurs of all ages to established pros and marquee names. The Make Music New York summertime festival is always a treat. Then last year they launched Make Music Winter, featuring nearly a dozen different musical participatory parades to mark the first day of the season. The parades in NYC embark from various locations in Brooklyn and Manhattan, all of varying in length and tonal character. We somehow missed the winter solstice concerts last year, but definitely plan on checking out at least one of these this coming Friday.

Big crowd of people at the Make Music Winter in New York City

Parades of Make Music Winter

There are several terrific-sounding options from which to choose. We had the great pleasure of joining Phil Kline for his annual Un-silent Night last weekend in the Village (pictured above), so we're more than a little intrigued that he has a piece in Make Music Winter. Called Peregrine, it's a "walking boom-box ambient" composition. Kline will have 50 boom-boxes on hand, but bring your own if you can. The parade will start at BAM and wind its way around Fort Greene for about 45 minutes. And this one sounds pretty haunting, too: Kent Title's Pilgrimage (below), which takes you on a lantern-lit procession through Central Park while singing medieval melodies. There will be a number of experienced Early Music singers on hand, but all are welcome to join; just download the scores here. Pilgrimage leaves the Park Avenue Methodist Church on the Upper East Side at 6:00, and arrives at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, across the park, a little more than hour later.

Parade in NYC: The More the Merrier

But really, all of Make Music Winter Parades in NYC seem cool. From Daniel Goode's Soho Gamelan Walk, featuring hand-drumming on that neighborhood's hollow building facades, to Jonathan Batiste's Love Riot, a melodica parade in East Harlem; to Patrick Grant's Tilted Axes (below), a piece for "mobile electric guitars" that will rock the East Village starting at the Public Theater at 7:00. As is the case during their summer festival, Make Music Winter is "open to anyone who wants to take part, enjoyed by everyone who wants to attend." Like so much that happens in this beautiful city, we're grateful for the time, energy and creativity that the Make Music folks put into these programs, and we'll be there with bells on.

Make Music Winter 2012 details

The Make Music Winter 2012 parades in NYC will all happen on the Winter Solstice, this Friday, December 21, at various times and locations. For lots more information about Make Music New York and all of the winter solstice concerts, visit them online!
